Chapter 2

The restaurant was the kind of place where the lighting cost more than most people's rent. Soft amber, strategically angled, designed to make everyone look like they were worth something. I sat at table seven in a wine-red dress I'd chosen myself, between Drake on my left and Quincy Ramos on my right, and watched the sommelier pour a Burgundy that cost more than my first paycheck on Wall Street.

Quincy was in his sixties. Silver-haired, broad-shouldered, the kind of man who smiled with his whole face and meant nothing with any of it. He'd been charming all through the amuse-bouche, asking about my background with the practiced interest of someone who didn't care about the answer. I gave him enough to seem engaged. It was a skill I'd spent three years perfecting.

The second course arrived. Duck confit, a smear of something violet on white porcelain. I picked up my fork.

That's when Quincy's hand found my thigh under the table.

Not accidental. Not a brush. A full, deliberate press of his palm, fingers curling slightly, the casual confidence of a man who had never once been told no by anyone who needed something from him.

My body went rigid. Every muscle from my shoulders to my knees locked in sequence, like a system executing an emergency protocol. I set my fork down very carefully so it wouldn't make a sound.

I looked at Drake.

He was leaning forward, refilling Quincy's wine glass, laughing at something Quincy had said before the hand, before any of this, his whole face open and easy in a way I almost never saw. The candlelight caught the side of his jaw. He looked like a man without a single thing wrong in his world.

He did not look at me.

I removed Quincy's hand by shifting my chair back two inches under the pretense of adjusting my napkin. Quincy smiled at his plate. Drake kept talking.

I excused myself at the end of the second course.

The corridor outside the dining room was all dark wood paneling and muted sconces, the kind of quiet that costs money. I was already calculating — the term sheet structure, Quincy's leverage points, the counter-offer geometry — when Drake appeared behind me.

He didn't touch me. He stood close, voice low, the same tone he used to close acquisitions. "Quincy needs to feel good about tonight," he said. "Whatever that takes. This deal doesn't close without him comfortable."

I turned and looked at him.

His expression was boardroom-clean. No apology in it. No awareness of what he was asking, or maybe full awareness and simply no shame about it — I couldn't tell anymore, and I realized standing there that I'd spent three years trying to tell the difference and it had never once mattered.

He was deploying an asset. That was all this was.

"I understand," I said.

My voice came out flat. Not angry. Not broken. Just flat, the way a door sounds when it closes on an empty room.

Drake nodded once, satisfied, and went back inside.

I stood in that corridor for exactly four seconds. Then I followed him.

---

Over the next forty minutes, I took the dinner apart and rebuilt it.

Not loudly. I never do anything loudly. I asked Quincy a question about his Singapore holdings — a detail buried in a footnote of the briefing materials Drake hadn't read past page three. Quincy's eyes sharpened with genuine interest. I let him talk. I listened the way I used to listen on trading floors, finding the load-bearing walls in what a person says.

Then I introduced a counter-structure. Quietly, conversationally, framed as a question rather than a correction. A revenue-sharing clause that redistributed the risk exposure Drake's original term sheet had left dangerously one-sided. Quincy leaned forward. I watched him do the math in his head and reach the conclusion I'd already mapped out for him.

I reframed his leverage twice more before dessert arrived. Each time, I made it feel like his idea.

By the time the espressos came, Quincy was relaxed and expansive, the hand under the table apparently forgotten by the only person it had never really threatened. He signed the term sheet on the back of the dessert menu with a pen the maître d' produced, laughing like a man who'd gotten exactly what he came for.

He had. Just not what he'd expected.

Drake shook his hand at the door. "Pleasure doing business, Quincy. Best evening I've had in months."

Quincy clapped him on the shoulder. "You've got good people, Drake." His eyes slid briefly to me. "Very good."

The car came. Drake held the door. Inside, he reviewed the signed term sheet under the reading light, satisfied, already somewhere else in his head.

He didn't thank me.

I watched the city slide past the window — the lights blurring, all that amber and neon dissolving into streaks — and thought about the email sitting in my inbox. Victor Hale. London. A number with nine figures and my name attached to it like a correction.

I folded my hands in my lap and said nothing.

Four more days.
