After I Found My Husband Funding His Mistress’s Penthouse Chapter 1

At two o’clock, I called the steakhouse in Midtown for the third time.

“Everything is set, Mrs. Montgomery,” the manager said, his voice polite and smooth. “The private room in the back is ready. Twelve guests. The cake from the bakery arrived twenty minutes ago. Dark chocolate and espresso, just like you ordered.”

“Thank you, Frank,” I said. “And the wine?”

“Two bottles of the 2015 Cabernet are already breathing on the sideboard.”

I exhaled. “Perfect.”

I hung up and sat at the kitchen island. My phone buzzed with replies from my father’s oldest friends. Uncle Joe from Queens was on the subway. Greg and Martha were driving in from New Jersey. Everyone was coming.

My father, Curtis, was turning sixty today. He was a quiet man who spent forty years working as an independent building contractor. His knuckles were thick and his hands were always dry, but his heart was pure gold. After my mother died when I was ten, he gave up everything to raise me. He packed my lunches, drove me to art classes, and paid my college tuition out of his savings.

Tonight was for him. I had spent three weeks planning every single detail.

I checked my text thread with my husband, Rayan.

*See you there at six-thirty,* his message from this morning read. *Table reserved under Montgomery.*

A wave of relief washed over me. Rayan had been distant lately. Vertex Dynamics, his tech company, was expanding fast, and he barely slept at home three nights a week. But he had promised. Last night, he kissed my cheek and swore he wouldn't miss Curtis’s milestone.

I walked into our master bedroom to get ready.

Our Upper East Side penthouse was stunning, but it often felt like a museum. White marble, cold chrome, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. Everything in it was sleek and modern. When Rayan and I were broke in Brooklyn, sharing a tiny studio with a radiator that hissed all night, we dreamed of a place like this. Back then, I maxed out three credit cards to pay his first software engineers. I stayed up until 2:00 AM drafting brand pitch decks for him, then went to my own freelance design job at dawn.

Now, he was the celebrated CEO of Vertex Dynamics, worth tens of millions. And I was the invisible wife whose calendar revolved entirely around his schedule.

I picked out a navy silk wrap dress. Simple, elegant, Dad’s favorite color on me. I brushed my dark hair until it shone, applied a touch of rose lipstick, and fastened a thin silver pendant around my neck.

I looked at myself in the mirror. There were faint shadows under my eyes, but for the first time in months, my smile reached them. I felt a flutter of real hope. Maybe tonight could be a fresh start for Rayan and me, too. We could sit side by side, laugh at Dad’s bad jokes, and remember who we used to be.

At five-fifteen, I grabbed my clutch and walked back to the kitchen.

On the marble counter, right beside the fruit bowl, sat the birthday card. I had bought it yesterday. This morning, while Rayan drank his black espresso before rushing out, I slid it in front of him.

He didn't read the printed message inside. He just picked up his Montblanc pen, scrawled *Best, Rayan* in jagged black ink, and tossed the pen onto the counter.

I touched the envelope. It was cold.

Then my phone rang.

*Rayan.*

I swiped the screen with a smile. “Hey. Are you in the car?”

“Autumn,” his voice came through the speaker. It was clipped, rushed, and perfectly controlled. Boardroom tone. “Listen to me. Something came up.”

The smile dropped off my face. My fingers tightened on the edge of the counter. “What do you mean?”

“The West Coast syndicate,” he said. A rustle of papers sounded in the background. “The lead partner just landed at JFK for an unscheduled meeting. We have to go over the term sheet for the Series C round right now.”

“Rayan, dinner starts in an hour,” I said. My voice sounded thin, even to my own ears. “You promised me. You promised my dad.”

“Autumn, don't be unreasonable,” he said, his tone dropping an octave, slipping into that cool, patronizing register he used whenever I pushed back. “This is a forty-million-dollar funding round. The future of Vertex depends on it. You know how this works.”

“It’s his sixtieth birthday, Rayan. Just two hours. You can meet them at eight—”

“I can’t,” he cut in sharply. There wasn't an ounce of regret in his voice. Just impatience. “The world doesn't pause for a birthday party. Tell Curtis I’m sorry. Order him that single malt scotch he likes. Put it on the black card.”

“He doesn't want your card, Rayan. He wants his family.”

“I have to go, they just walked in,” Rayan said smoothly. “Have a good time. Give your dad my best.”

The line went dead.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.*

The silence in the penthouse rushed back in, heavy and suffocating.

I stood there in the center of the kitchen, holding the phone against my ear for five long seconds after the call ended. The hum of the sub-zero refrigerator was the only sound in the giant room.

I looked down at the island.

The white envelope was still sitting there. *Best, Rayan.*

A sudden, sharp ache hit my ribs, like cold water seeping into my lungs. My hand trembled, but only for a second. Then, slowly, my fingers steadied.

I picked up the card, dropped it into my purse, and grabbed my coat.
