Chapter 3

I heard the crash before I saw it.

A sharp metallic bang, then the long cascading shatter of glass hitting marble — the kind of sound that stops every conversation in a hallway at once. I was three steps from the elevator, a folder tucked under my arm, when the delivery cart went over.

Mina was standing right beside it. Her hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes went wide — that particular wide, the kind that photographs well. The cart had been stacked with glass-framed achievement awards headed for the executive floor, and they came down in a wave, frames and glass and twisted metal, straight toward her.

I moved without thinking. That's the honest answer. Three years of being Drake's closest shadow had wired my body to solve problems before my brain finished naming them. I stepped in front of her and took the edge of the cart on my forearm.

The glass found me anyway.

I felt it before I registered it — a clean, cold line drawn across my left forearm, just below the elbow. Then the heat came. I looked down. A dark line opened through my sleeve, and blood welled up slowly, seriously, the kind that meant something.

I pressed my arm against my side and turned.

Mina was untouched. Not a scratch. Her cream blouse was perfect. Her hair was perfect. She stood there with one hand still raised to her lips, trembling just enough to be visible from across the hallway, and she looked — I have to give her this — she looked exactly like a woman who'd just been saved.

Drake came out of the conference room at a near-run.

I watched him cross the hallway. I watched his eyes go straight to her, only her, the way a compass needle swings north without consulting anyone. He reached Mina and put both hands on her face, tilting it up, scanning her for damage that wasn't there.

"Are you hurt?" His voice was raw. I had never once heard him use that voice with me.

Mina's eyes filled. She shook her head, a small trembling motion, and then she pressed her face into his chest and her shoulders shook, and Drake's arms went around her and he stroked her hair — slowly, carefully, like she was something that could break.

"It's okay," he said into the top of her head. "I've got you. You're okay."

I stood three feet away.

Blood dripped off my wrist and hit the marble floor. One drop. Then another. Small dark circles on white stone, perfectly spaced, like punctuation.

Nobody looked at me.

The hallway staff had formed a loose half-circle around Drake and Mina. Someone was already on the phone about the cart. Someone else was photographing the damage for facilities. I watched all of this from a slight remove, my arm pressed to my side, and felt something I couldn't quite name — not rage, not grief, something quieter and more final than either of those. The feeling of a question you've been asking for three years finally answering itself.

I walked to the executive restroom at the end of the hall. I didn't hurry. There was no point in hurrying.

The restroom was empty. White marble, good lighting, the kind of space designed to make you look composed even when you aren't. I ran cold water over my forearm at the sink and watched the blood thin and spiral down the drain. The cut was clean — deep enough to mean it, not deep enough to require more than I could manage myself. I found the first aid kit under the sink where I'd restocked it six weeks ago, because of course I had, because that was the kind of thing I did without being asked.

Gauze. Medical tape. I worked quickly, wrapping the forearm with the same focused economy I'd once applied to risk models — assess, contain, close. My hands didn't shake. I noticed that. I thought it was worth noticing.

When I was done, I held my own reflection's gaze in the mirror for a moment.

The woman looking back at me had a bandaged arm, a blazer with a dark stain at the cuff, and eyes that had stopped asking for things. She looked, I thought, like someone who had finally finished a very long calculation and arrived at the only answer that had always been waiting.

I pulled my sleeve down over the bandage. Straightened my blazer. Checked that the lapels sat flat.

Three more days.

I walked back to my desk, sat down, and opened the London relocation terms Victor Hale had sent that morning. I read every clause. I initialed the digital signature fields one by one, calm and methodical, the hallway noise already fading behind the closed door like something that had happened to someone else.

Outside, I could still hear Drake's voice, low and soothing, asking Mina if she needed anything.

I hit send.

Then I picked up the next item in my queue and got back to work.
