Chapter 1

On Valentine’s Day, I fell in the restroom. But my husband said he couldn’t accompany me to the hospital as he was on a business trip.

As I was about to enter the operating room, I received a message from the airline’s exclusive Black Card members: [Dear Black Card member, thank you for booking our first-class family seat to the Sirie. Your points have been credited toward your total.]

As if struck by lightning, I sat up from the maternity exam bed. Just as I was about to send my assistant to check, a message suddenly popped up on her WhatsApp’s status.

[I thought I’d live my whole life in someone’s shadow. Thank you, husband, for giving my child and I a sweet night together as a family of three.]

The accompanying image showed two large hands holding a small one.

On one of the large hands was a Rolex watch, a Valentine’s Day gift I’d given my husband.

I couldn’t believe the girl I’d helped support and promoted to assistant was actually having an affair with my husband.

The doctor’s urgent words echoed in my ears. “Ms. Woods, if the surgery isn’t started now, the baby’s life will be in danger.”

“That’s perfect. Arrange an abortion for me.”

——

Just as the doctor was about to wheel me in for a prenatal checkup, my phone vibrated several times.

[Dear Black Card holder, thank you for booking our first-class family seat to the Sirie. Your points have been added to your total.]

The message struck me like lightning.

I hadn’t booked a ticket to the Sirie and my child wasn’t even born yet, so why would they have booked a family seat?

Thinking the airline had made a mistake, I called them to inquire.

“Hello, ma’am. It’s indeed the points added to your Black Card. The passenger is a man named Rusty and…”

Before I could finish, the surgeon sternly advised, “Ms. Woods, you can’t delay any longer. Although it’s just a bump and no bleeding, you still need a thorough checkup.”

My heart was in turmoil.

I opened a WhatsApp, intending to ask my assistant, Harper, to check for me. Suddenly, a new post popped up on her WhatsApp’s status.

[I thought I’d live my whole life in someone’s shadow. Thank you, my husband, for giving my child and I a sweet night as a family of three.]

The accompanying image showed two large hands holding a small one.

But before I could even look at it for a second, the post was deleted.

In an instant, I couldn’t even see her previous posts. But even so, I could still clearly see one of the hands.

On one of the wrists was a Rolex watch, a gift I’d given my husband for Valentine’s Day.

Just because my husband, Rusty, had said his wrist was empty, I pulled strings, spent all my savings and sent someone to buy this limited-edition Rolex.

This sudden news still left me a little unbelievable.

I immediately called my husband. My heart was pounding with panic.

The other end answered quickly. “Wife? What’s wrong? I’m about to take off. I’ll call you after landing.”

He hung up hastily before I could finish. But I could still hear a familiar female voice in the quiet first-class cabin, soothing the child.

“Harmony! Don’t disturb Daddy on the phone!”

My heart sank. I quickly called my assistant, Harper, but she didn’t answer for a long time.

The next second, the airline message came back.

[Thank you, Mr. Rusty, Ms. Harper. Harmony is on this flight. Wishing you and your happy family of three a pleasant journey.]
