When My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Dying Baby

8.1 / 10.0
Just forty-eight hours after giving birth, a recovering mother rests in her hospital bed alongside her newborn daughter, Madeline. The joy of new motherhood shatters when her husband, Weston, enters. Offering no warm embrace, no tender kiss, and not a single glance at their child, his icy detachment reveals a devastating truth as the anesthesia fades. His heart belongs to another, leaving her completely alone to face a brutal betrayal.

When My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Dying Baby Chapter 1

The IV in my left hand itched. That was the first thing I noticed when the door opened.

My stitches pulled when I turned my head. Madeline was asleep in the bassinet beside the bed, a pink hat slipped down over one ear. She had been in this world for forty-eight hours. I had been a mother for forty-eight hours. The anesthesia still hung at the edges of my vision like fog on a windshield.

Weston walked in. He didn't kiss my forehead. He didn't look at the bassinet.

He was holding a folder.

"Hi," I said. My voice came out cracked. I cleared it. "You're early. Visiting hours don't start till—"

"I need to talk to you."

He set the folder on my bedside tray. Right next to the plastic cup of ice chips. He still didn't sit.

"What's that?" I asked.

"It's an agreement." His voice was even. Like he was ordering coffee. "I need space, Elodie. A few months. Maybe longer."

I stared at him. The room was too bright. The fluorescent buzz felt loud in my teeth.

"Space," I repeated.

"Kamiyah flew in last night." He paused. He waited for me to react to the name. I didn't. I couldn't. I had heard it before — in arguments, in silences, in a photograph he never deleted from his phone. "From Paris. I'm going to be with her."

My hands started to shake. I pressed them flat against the blanket so he wouldn't see.

"Weston." I tried again. "I had surgery two days ago. Our daughter is right there. What— what are we to you?"

He finally looked at me. Really looked. And what I saw in his face wasn't guilt. It was relief. Like he'd been waiting a long time to put something down.

"You were a bad night in a bar," he said. "After she said no. I married you because I was angry. That's the truth."

The IV pole made a small ticking sound.

"Our wedding," I whispered.

"I was with her the night before. At the Carlyle. Room 1204." He said it like a fact on a tax return. "I'm telling you because I owe you that much."

That much. He owed me that much.

I looked at the folder. White paper. Black type. My name printed neat at the top. I did not pick it up. I did not touch it.

"Leave," I said.

"Elodie—"

"Get out."

He straightened his cuffs. He walked to the door. He did not turn his head toward the bassinet. Not once. Madeline made a small sound in her sleep, the soft mewing of a kitten, and he kept walking.

The door clicked shut. I stared at it for a long time. Then I reached over with the hand that wasn't tied to the IV and pulled Madeline's bassinet closer until it touched the rail of my bed.

"Hi, baby," I said. My throat hurt. "Hi."

My mother's apartment in Queens smelled like coffee and Tide.

Diane didn't ask. That was the first gift. She set up the twin bed I'd slept in through high school, pushed it against the wall, and laid a folded quilt across the foot. She bought a bassinet at the secondhand store on Roosevelt Avenue. She left bowls of soup outside my door and took them away when they were empty.

For six weeks I nursed Madeline in that twin bed. I watched the radiator hiss. I watched the light move across the ceiling in the late afternoon. Sometimes I cried so quietly I didn't notice until my collarbone was wet.

One evening Mom knocked. "Let me hold her so you can shower."

I handed Madeline over. In the bathroom, with the water hot against my stitches, I pressed my forehead to the tile and tried to remember what Weston's voice had sounded like the first time he said he loved me. I couldn't. The new voice had erased the old one. The bar voice. The Carlyle voice.

I got out. I dried off. I did not cry again that night.

Six weeks later I used my key.

The brownstone on East 74th smelled the way it always smelled — eucalyptus from the diffuser Cynthia had picked out, lemon polish on the banister. I climbed the stairs slowly. Madeline was at Mom's. I had told myself I just wanted my things. I had told myself a lot of things.

The master bedroom door was open.

Kamiyah was sitting up against my pillows. My pillows. My ivory linen, my lavender sachets underneath. She was wearing the silk robe my father gave me for my twenty-fifth birthday. The blush one. The belt was loose.

Weston was beside her. He didn't move when he saw me. He didn't pull up the sheet.

Kamiyah tilted her head. She looked at me the way you look at a delivery person who's rung the wrong bell. She smiled. Small. Easy.

"Hi," she said. "You wouldn't mind closing the door on your way out, would you?"

I heard a sound come out of me. Not a word. Not yet.

I crossed the room in three steps and slapped her across the face.

My palm stung. Her head snapped sideways. The robe slipped off her shoulder.

"Elodie." Weston was on his feet. He wasn't looking at her. He was looking at me, and his jaw was tight in a way I had only seen once before, at a board meeting through a glass wall. "Downstairs. Now."

"Weston—"

"Now."

He called the nanny on the way down. "Bring the baby to the living room."

My knees almost gave on the last step. I caught the banister. "What are you doing?"

He didn't answer. He waited at the bottom of the stairs until the nanny came down with Madeline in her arms — my Madeline, in her white sleeper, eyes still half-closed from her nap — and then he took her, and walked past me, and put her in Kamiyah's arms.

Kamiyah had come down behind me. The red mark on her cheek was already blooming.

"Kamiyah will be overseeing her care from now on," Weston said. To the room. To the nanny. To me. "Is that clear."

Then he turned to me.

"Kneel."

I thought I had misheard.

"On the floor. Apologize to her."

The rug under my feet was cream. Hand-knotted. I had picked it out myself a year ago at a showroom in SoHo, and Weston had laughed and said I had expensive taste for a girl from Queens.

I looked at my daughter. In another woman's arms. In my silk robe.

My knees hit the rug.

Something inside me — something that had been holding for three years, holding through the IVF and the group chat and the holiday letters — made a small, clean sound.

Like a hairline crack in glass.
