After My Mate Chose His Mistress as Luna Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:08 PM on the night of the Winter Solstice Banquet.

I felt it three minutes earlier—a violent lurch through the mate bond, like something inside James had torn loose and started to rot. My fingers flew to the mark on my neck. The skin was hot, then cold, then hot again in waves that made my stomach twist. Tucker. The same signature was pulsing from Tucker, faint but accelerating. Lycan Decay. Real this time. Both of them.

I shoved through the crowded great hall, my ceremonial Luna cloak catching on shoulders and elbows. Wolves stepped aside without looking at me. The bond screamed louder with every step toward James's private study. I had to warn him. Ten years of healing through this bond, and I knew its language better than my own pulse—this was different. This was urgent.

I reached the study corridor and heard laughter.

James's voice, low and easy. "—ten years, Derek. A full decade of playing the dying wolf, and she never questioned it once."

My hand froze on the doorframe.

"Embarrassingly easy to maintain," James continued. "A few groans during pack runs, some convenient fatigue before tribunal meetings, and Abigail pours herself into the bond like I'm actually dying. Meanwhile, I've been crossing territory lines twice a week to see Trinity. Tonight, I mark her. In front of everyone."

Beta Derek's laugh was sharp and approving. "And the pup?"

"Tucker's ready. Trinity's been coaching him for months. He'll reject Abigail on cue—call her Omega, the whole performance. It'll be clean."

My back hit the corridor wall. The plaster cracked under my nails.

Inside my chest, my wolf—silent for years, suppressed for years—slammed awake. Not with a whimper. With a snarl that rattled my ribs and filled my mouth with the taste of iron. I clamped down on it, forcing it silent, my teeth cutting into my tongue. Not here. Not yet.

I turned and walked back into the great hall. My legs moved. My face stayed still. Inside, my wolf was screaming.

The crowd had gathered in a ceremonial circle. James stood at the center under the Solstice moon banner, Trinity beside him in a dress the color of fresh blood. Tucker clung to her hand, his small face tilted up toward her like she was the only light in the room.

James's eyes found mine across the hall. He smiled.

"Ironwood Pack," he said, his voice carrying the Alpha tone that made every wolf's spine straighten. "Witness."

I stopped walking. The crowd opened a path between us.

James's smile didn't waver. "I, James Harlow, Alpha of the Ironwood Pack, reject you, Abigail Voss, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Then it went empty.

It wasn't pain—not the way I'd imagined rejection would feel. It was absence. The bond that had hummed under my skin for ten years, the constant low pulse of another life tangled with mine, cut off mid-beat. My wolf's voice—the snarl, the rage, the awakening—severed into silence so complete I couldn't tell if she was still there or if I'd imagined her entirely.

My knees locked. I did not fall.

The Luna cloak was still on my shoulders—heavy, ceremonial, lined with silver thread that caught the firelight. James stepped toward me, his hand reaching for the clasp at my throat. The traditional stripping. The final humiliation.

I tore it off first.

The clasp snapped. The fabric ripped at the shoulder seam. I hurled it at his feet—not dropped, not offered—hurled, so it hit the ground between us in a heap of ruined silk.

James blinked. Just once. Then he bent, picked it up, and draped it over Trinity's shoulders.

"Ironwood Pack," he said again, his hand settling on Trinity's waist. "Your new Luna."

The crowd murmured approval. Controlled. Rehearsed.

I looked at Tucker. My son. Five years old, his dark hair still messy from the car ride to the banquet, his little fists clenched at his sides the way they always did when he was nervous.

"Tucker," I said quietly.

He yanked his hand from Trinity's grip—and I thought, for one breath, that he was coming to me.

He screamed instead.

"You smell like nothing!" His voice cracked high and shrill across the silent hall. "You're an Omega!"

Trinity's hand settled on his shoulder. She didn't look at me. She didn't need to.

I looked at my son's face. I memorized it. The shape of his nose. The way his left eyebrow sat slightly higher than his right. The small scar on his chin from when he'd fallen off the porch steps at three years old and I'd held him while the Healer stitched it closed.

Then I turned and walked toward the door.

Behind me, I heard the crack of wood splitting. Casual. Dismissive. I didn't turn, but I knew the sound—I'd carved that wolf totem myself, spent weeks on the fine details of the fur and the curve of the tail, presented it to James on our tenth anniversary three days ago.

He'd just broken it.

The great hall doors swung open. Cold air hit my face. I stepped out into the snow and kept walking until the pack house lights were small behind me and the forest swallowed the sound of the Solstice music.

Then I stopped.

I pressed two fingers to the mark on my neck. The skin was ash-gray and cold. No pulse. No warmth. No faint tether to another life.

Nothing.

I sank into the snow and cried. Once. Alone. Where no one would ever see.

My wolf was silent.

Before dawn, I forced myself upright. My legs shook. My cloak was gone. My mark was dead. My son had called me Omega before an entire pack and meant it.

But I had memorized ten years of pack law.

And I knew exactly whose door to find.
