Chapter 3

The Moretti estate slept late that night, but I didn’t. The laughter from the banquet still echoed in my skull, the scent of Bianca’s perfume still clinging to the air like an omen.

After everyone had gone—after Dante retreated to his study with his cigars and secrets—I walked the halls in silence. The chandeliers glowed faintly, their light fractured by crystal, turning everything gold and fragile.

It was the kind of beauty that rots from the inside.

I had spent twenty-five years inside these walls—managing, polishing, obeying. Yet the house had never truly belonged to me. Not the way it did to Dante. Not the way it now seemed to belong to her.

I stopped outside his office door. A thin line of light spilled through the crack beneath it. I could hear voices—low, conspiratorial.

One of them was his.

The other was hers.

“…it’s settled then,” Dante said, his tone gravel and smoke. “The oath will make it official. The Russos will be absorbed, and you’ll stand beside me when it happens.”

Bianca laughed softly, that gentle, practiced sound she used when she wanted to sound innocent. “Beside you? I thought you said you’d make me family.”

A pause. The sound of a glass setting down. “I’m doing more than that, bella,” Dante said. “You’ll be blood.”

My fingers tightened around the doorknob.

Blood.

In our world, that word meant more than love or marriage—it meant alliance, unbreakable and permanent. A blood oath ceremony wasn’t symbolic. It was a declaration that two families were merging through loyalty—or intimacy. Sometimes both.

And Dante was promising her that.

My stomach churned.

Bianca’s voice was low now, teasing. “And Isabella?”

“What about her?”

“She’ll still be your wife on paper.”

A beat of silence, followed by Dante’s cold chuckle. “For now. She won’t fight me. She never does.”

My pulse pounded.

“You underestimate her,” Bianca murmured.

“No,” he said simply. “I know her. She’s loyal to a fault. Even if she knew, she’d stay quiet. She’s built for obedience, not war.”

Bianca giggled softly. “Then I’ll make sure she stays that way.”

The sound that left me wasn’t a sob—it was something sharper. A sound I didn’t recognize as my own. I turned away, my heels silent against the marble, and walked back toward our bedroom before I did something I couldn’t take back.

In the mirror, my reflection looked like a stranger. My lipstick was gone, my hair undone. There was a streak of red wine down my sleeve—blood or Merlot, I couldn’t tell anymore.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to break the glass.

Instead, I stood there, breathing through the rage.

There was no point in confronting him now. Not yet.

If there’s one thing a Moretti woman learns, it’s patience.

---

By morning, the house was a hive of activity. The maids rushed up and down the stairs, carrying boxes of silk and gold embroidery. Men in tailored suits moved through the hallways, murmuring about guest lists and shipments.

At breakfast, I sat at the far end of the table while Dante scrolled through his phone, barely acknowledging me. My father joined us late, humming with satisfaction.

“You’ve done good work, boy,” he said to Dante. “Uniting our families again—it’s poetic, really.”

I looked up sharply. “Uniting?”

Dante didn’t even glance my way. “You’ll see soon enough.”

“See what?”

My father smirked. “The ceremony, of course. Don’t tell me you weren’t invited?”

The words hit me like gunfire.

Ceremony.

He saw the confusion flash across my face and laughed. “It’s nothing formal. Just business. But it’ll be a grand event—press, investors, old allies. You know how these things are.”

I forced a smile. “Of course. Business.”

Bianca entered then, radiant in white silk, her hair pinned up with pearls. She carried herself with the ease of someone who already believed she belonged here.

“Uncle Dante,” she said sweetly, kissing his cheek. “The designers from Milan just arrived. They’re setting up in the ballroom. We should review the final vows before the press briefing.”

Vows.

My fork slipped from my hand, clattering against the plate.

She turned to me, all innocence. “Oh, Aunt Isabella—you’ll love the design. We’ve chosen something timeless.”

“I’m sure you have,” I said softly.

Dante finally looked at me. “You should rest today, Bella. You’ve looked tired lately.”

“I’m fine.”

He smiled thinly. “Then stay fine by staying quiet. This isn’t your concern.”

That was when I realized—they weren’t even pretending anymore.

Whatever this “ceremony” was, it wasn’t just business. It was personal. It was betrayal wrapped in white lace and sealed with blood.

---

By noon, I was alone. The staff were too busy preparing for the event to notice when I slipped into Dante’s study. The smell of his cigar still lingered, mixing with the faint tang of expensive whiskey. His desk was cluttered with files, blueprints, and invitations.

My heart thudded as I picked one up.

The Moretti–Russo Alliance Ceremony.

Honoring the Blood Oath of Don Dante Moretti and Bianca Russo.

The venue: The Palazzo di San Vieri.

Tomorrow.

And printed in gold at the bottom:

Private Ceremony — Immediate Family and Key Associates Only.

There were photos attached—mockups of the event space, floral arrangements, and a seating chart.

My name wasn’t on it.

But my son’s was.

And my father’s.

Even the priest’s name mocked me. Father Vieri—the same man who had refused to marry Dante and me because of the blood on his hands.

So this was the life I’d given everything for.

A husband who traded vows for contracts.

A father who sold loyalty for legacy.

And a goddaughter who wore my ring before I could take it off.

I felt something shift inside me then—not pain, not grief, but clarity.

For years, I’d mistaken silence for peace. Now I understood: silence is just what control sounds like.

---

That night, I didn’t sleep. I packed instead. Quietly, methodically. The jewelry he gave me—the ones that came from bribes and blood—I left behind. The rest, I took.

From the bottom of my vanity, I pulled out the small safe I’d kept hidden all these years. Inside were three things:

A burner phone.

A bank account number under my mother’s maiden name.

And a photograph—me, at twenty-two, standing beside a man with kind eyes and paint on his hands. Luca Santoro.

We’d met long before Dante claimed me. I was an art student then, naïve enough to believe love could save anyone. He was the one who told me, “You can’t build beauty on blood, Bella. It always seeps through.”

I hadn’t listened.

But maybe now I would.

---

Morning came heavy with gray clouds. The city hummed in the distance. Somewhere, Bianca was probably rehearsing her vows, practicing how to look devoted.

I made one last circuit of the house. The maids nodded politely, unaware that by the next sunrise, I’d be gone.

In Dante’s office, I left an envelope on his desk. Inside: my wedding ring.

No note. No farewell. Just silence—the kind he had taught me so well.

As I walked through the gates for the last time, I looked up at the mansion’s iron crest—Moretti per sempre.

Forever Moretti.

I smiled.

“Not anymore,” I whispered.

The city swallowed me as I stepped into the waiting car. The driver—an old contact from Luca’s gallery—didn’t speak. He simply drove.

Behind us, the estate shrank until it was nothing more than a blur of light on the horizon.

I didn’t look back.

Because in this world, when a woman walks away from a Don, she doesn’t return.

She rebuilds.

She reclaims.

And one day, she returns not as a wife—

but as a storm.
