My Husband Married the Woman Who Destroyed Us Chapter 1

For twenty-five years, I’ve stood beside Dante Moretti—the man the underworld calls “The Gentleman Don.”

He was my husband, my protector, my captor.

And tonight, on our anniversary, I finally asked him to keep the promise he made when he first slid that diamond ring on my finger—the night he swore, “I’ll give you a life outside the blood.”

We were in the penthouse dining room, high above the city lights, the skyline cut like glass through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The table gleamed with silver and crystal. I’d arranged it myself, though the maids could’ve done it. Old habits die hard.

“Do you remember what you promised me, Dante?” I asked, my voice soft but steady. “You said once the wars were over, we’d renew our vows. In a real church. No guards, no business, just us.”

He didn’t even look up.

His attention stayed fixed on the tablet glowing in front of him, numbers scrolling like veins of light. “Renew our vows?” he repeated, tone dry, almost mocking. “You make it sound like we’re some suburban couple celebrating a midlife crisis.”

My heart sank. “It’s our twenty-fifth anniversary.”

He leaned back in his chair, finally meeting my eyes. That smile—cold, controlled, the one he used in negotiations—slid across his face.

“A church, Isabella? At our age? You think God wants to bless people like us?”

“It’s not about God,” I said quietly. “It’s about us.”

“Us,” he echoed. “Right.” He pushed the tablet aside, poured himself a glass of whiskey. “You’ve had a good life. A beautiful home. Money. Respect. You never had to get your hands dirty. That was my promise—and I kept it. So why start fantasizing now?”

His words landed like a backhand.

I blinked slowly, tasting humiliation on my tongue.

“I wasn’t fantasizing,” I murmured. “I just thought after all these years, we could—”

He cut me off with a low laugh. “You thought wrong.”

He took a sip, watching me over the rim of the glass. “You should spend your time painting again. Or hosting those charity dinners you love so much. You were good at pretending you cared about the poor.”

I straightened, my hands curling against the edge of the table. “You said once that when things were stable—”

He slammed his glass down, the sound sharp against marble. “Things are never stable in this world, Bella. You know that.”

The silence that followed felt suffocating. Beyond the windows, the city pulsed—distant sirens, muffled jazz from the club below. A kingdom built on blood. His kingdom.

“I just wanted one thing,” I whispered. “For once.”

He smirked. “You sound like Bianca.”

My chest tightened.

“Bianca?” I repeated, trying to keep my tone neutral.

“She’s been helping me with some restructuring,” he said casually. “Sharp girl. Reminds me of how you were before you got… comfortable.”

Bianca Russo. My goddaughter. My cousin’s child. The girl I’d mentored, protected, fed from my own kitchen. Twenty-four, ambitious, magnetic.

And now she was working with him.

“Bianca?” I forced a smile. “She’s young. She shouldn’t be anywhere near this world.”

“She understands the business,” he said. “Something you never cared to learn.”

That one hurt more than I’d admit.

Because once upon a time, I did want to understand. But he’d told me to stay out of it—‘The less you know, the safer you are.’

So I obeyed. I stayed quiet. I played the dutiful wife in a golden cage.

And now, after all these years, that ignorance had turned into invisibility.

The door opened.

My father—Don Emilio Russo, retired boss of the old generation—walked in without knocking, cane striking the floor like a metronome. His white hair gleamed under the chandelier, his expression already sharp with disdain.

“Are we celebrating?” he asked, glancing between us.

“Our anniversary,” I said softly.

He snorted. “Anniversary? You should be celebrating the fact that my daughter managed to stay alive this long under your husband’s temper.”

Dante chuckled. “You wound me, Emilio. I’ve been nothing but gentle with your daughter.”

My father leaned on his cane, eyes cold. “Gentle? You’ve turned her into a ghost.”

I flinched at the words, though he didn’t say them kindly. He never did. My father saw weakness as a disease—and I was the symptom.

“You see that?” he said, jabbing his cane in my direction. “You’ve spoiled her. She doesn’t even carry herself like a Moretti anymore. No fire. No pride.”

“I’m right here,” I murmured.

“Then act like it,” he snapped. “Your cousin Bianca walks into a room and men stand up. You? You vanish into the wallpaper.”

Dante’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Don’t be so harsh. Bella just… prefers silence.”

My father’s laugh was bitter. “Silence is for the dead, boy. Maybe that’s what she’s been practicing all these years.”

I swallowed the sting, holding my breath until the tremor in my hands stopped.

“I’ll get more wine,” I said, rising from my chair. Anything to leave that room.

But before I could step away, Dante said, “Sit down, Bella. Let Bianca pour. She’s here.”

I turned—and there she was.

Bianca stood in the doorway, elegance wrapped in youth. Her dress shimmered black under the dim light, her smile polite yet knowing. “Uncle Dante,” she greeted warmly, then turned to me. “Aunt Isabella.”

The words dripped with respect, but her eyes didn’t match them.

They gleamed with something colder—possession, maybe. Or pity.

“I didn’t mean to intrude,” she said sweetly. “I was just dropping off the new contracts from the Valencia front.”

“Business never sleeps,” Dante said approvingly. “Come in, then.”

She moved to his side, their proximity too natural, too practiced.

I watched her lean slightly, whisper something near his ear. He laughed. My father chuckled too. The air shifted.

I stood there, forgotten, the sound of my pulse loud in my own head.

My gaze fell to the ring on my finger—the one he’d given me in a church with no witnesses, promising me eternity.

A promise he’d broken long before tonight.

I turned back to the table, forced a smile, and began clearing the glasses. My hands didn’t shake this time. They were steady. Cold.

As I reached for Dante’s empty tumbler, my reflection flickered in the glass—a woman I barely recognized.

Eyes hollow. Skin pale.

A ghost in silk.

I set the glass down, my voice low but clear.

“You’re right, Dante. We don’t need vows.”

He looked up, amused. “Oh?”

“No,” I said softly. “Vows are for people who still have something left to lose.”
