Chapter 4

The rain didn’t stop for three days.

I spent them staring out the window of a nameless apartment above a florist’s shop on the west side of the city, watching the world move on without me.

Below, people rushed through puddles, umbrellas blooming like bruises under gray skies. Life kept going, even when mine had split open.

I should’ve felt grief. Instead, I felt nothing—just a strange, pulsing quiet where pain should have been.

That was when I understood what survival really meant. It wasn’t strength. It was stillness. The kind of stillness you find in predators before they strike.

---

The place belonged to one of Luca’s men, an old enforcer turned gallery guard. He’d met me at the airport when I’d fled the Moretti estate, handing me a new phone, a new name, and a thick envelope of cash.

“Mr. Santoro said you’d know what to do next,” he’d said simply before disappearing into the rain.

I hadn’t seen Luca in nearly a decade. But the fact that he was still watching, still ready—that meant something.

The first night, I barely slept. I kept expecting Dante’s men to find me. I knew the drill: the moment a wife walks out, she’s considered a liability. Especially one who knows where the bodies are buried—literally and figuratively.

But no one came.

That frightened me more than the idea of being hunted. Because if Dante wasn’t looking for me, it meant he’d already replaced me. Entirely.

---

On the third morning, I finally turned on the TV. The local news anchor smiled too brightly, her voice slicing through static.

“...the much-anticipated alliance ceremony between the Moretti and Russo families took place yesterday at the historic Palazzo di San Vieri. Don Dante Moretti and Bianca Russo sealed their partnership through the traditional blood oath witnessed by close family and associates...”

My breath hitched.

The screen flickered, and there they were.

Dante—elegant in black, eyes sharp, smile rehearsed.

And Bianca—draped in white silk, her hand intertwined with his, a crimson thread wound between their palms.

A symbol of loyalty. Of unity. Of betrayal.

I pressed my hand to my mouth as the camera panned to the guests. My father sat in the front row, beaming like a proud monarch. My son—our son—stood beside him, dressed in the Moretti crest, clapping.

They were all smiling. As if nothing had died.

The reporter continued, oblivious to the wreckage her words created. “This alliance marks a new era for the city’s syndicates, ending years of quiet tension between the Russo and Moretti families. Sources confirm the union is expected to bring stability to their international operations.”

Stability.

That word almost made me laugh. The only stability Dante ever cared about was the kind built on silence—and I had been his foundation.

Without me, he was building on glass.

---

When the broadcast ended, I sat in the dark, letting the rain drown out the noise in my head. The numbness cracked at last, giving way to something hotter, sharper—rage.

Not the wild kind that screams. The quiet kind that plans.

I thought of Bianca’s eyes the last time I’d seen her—soft on the surface, calculating underneath. I thought of Dante’s smirk when he’d said I’d never fight him.

He was right about one thing: I never fought him before.

But that version of me had died somewhere between the dining room and the front gate.

This woman—this ghost they made—wasn’t going to stay buried.

---

That evening, I called the number Luca had left me.

He answered on the second ring. “I was starting to think you’d forgotten how to dial, Bella.”

His voice hadn’t changed. Low, calm, with a trace of humor that used to unravel me.

“I watched it,” I said.

“I figured you would.”

Silence stretched between us, filled with years we hadn’t spoken.

“You were right,” I finally murmured. “Beauty built on blood doesn’t last.”

He exhaled softly. “And yet, you survived it.”

“For now.”

“That’s enough,” he said. “Where are you?”

“Somewhere small. Somewhere invisible.”

“Good. Stay that way. Dante’s busy with his new empire, but he’s not stupid. He’ll realize soon enough that the accounts you handled were cleaner than he thought.”

I frowned. “What are you saying?”

“Half of his offshore assets are in your name,” Luca said. “Joint, technically. He can’t touch them without your signature.”

My pulse quickened. I’d always known Dante used me to launder money through my charities and art gallery, but I never realized how much power that gave me.

“Send me the details,” I said quietly.

Luca hesitated. “Bella, you don’t need to go to war with him. You could disappear. Start fresh.”

“I already disappeared once,” I said. “It didn’t save me. It just made me forget who I was.”

He sighed. “Then what do you want?”

“I want him to feel what I felt,” I said. “Powerless.”

---

Days passed. I stayed off the radar, but the city kept whispering. Rumors spread about cracks in the Moretti empire—shipments delayed, partners backing out, police raids in warehouses that had been untouchable for years.

Dante’s alliance was already bleeding, and he didn’t even know where the wound came from.

I spent my nights sketching again—lines, shadows, faces. The act steadied me, kept me from unraveling. The strokes grew bolder each night until one painting began to take shape: a woman standing before a shattered crown, her hands stained crimson but her face calm.

I didn’t know if it was revenge or rebirth I was painting. Maybe both.

---

One evening, a knock came at the door. I froze, reaching for the pistol Luca had left me.

“Relax,” a familiar voice said.

Luca stepped inside, shaking off the rain. He looked different—older, sharper—but the same calm radiated off him like quiet authority.

“You look terrible,” he said softly, studying me. “Beautiful, but terrible.”

“I didn’t invite you.”

“You never do.” He handed me an envelope. “You’ll want to see this.”

Inside were photos—grainy shots from the ceremony. Bianca in white, holding Dante’s hand. Dante kissing her cheek. My father lifting a glass.

But at the end, one photo stood out: Bianca whispering something into Dante’s ear, her expression smug. Behind them, my son watching with an unreadable face.

Luca watched me as I traced the image with my thumb. “It’s not just betrayal, Bella. It’s succession. They’re grooming your son to replace him—and her to control him.”

The words settled like ash. “They’re building their future on my grave.”

“Then don’t let them bury you.”

I looked up at him. “You think I can destroy him?”

“I think you already started,” he said. “But if you’re going to do it, do it right. Hit his pride, not his business. Make the city remember who Isabella Moretti is.”

I smiled faintly. “I don’t think she exists anymore.”

“Then make someone new,” he said. “Someone who can walk through fire and not flinch.”

---

That night, I stood on the balcony, the city lights glittering below like a constellation of sins. The rain had stopped, leaving the streets slick and shining.

I thought of the woman in my painting—the calm, crimson queen. She wasn’t waiting for mercy. She was creating her own justice.

The world thought I was gone.

Let them believe it.

Because ghosts are patient.

And when they return, no one sees them coming.
