The Mafia’s Reluctant Bride Chapter 1

The morning rush at Café Luna always felt like a storm—metallic clatter, voices rising, steam fogging the windows. I’d learned to ride that chaos, balancing cups and orders with a practiced efficiency, but today my hands shook, nerves frayed from a sleepless night tallying bills and Aunt Marian’s prescriptions. When the door chimed and silence rolled through the café like a cold wind, I glanced up.

He stood at the threshold—Dominic Moretti. I didn’t know his name yet, only the chill that seemed to spread from him, making the air heavy. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, crisp white shirt, and a look that made people back away without a word. Gray eyes, flat and unreadable, swept the room. I felt everyone’s gaze slide to me, the unlucky barista closest to the register.

“Double espresso, black,” he said—his voice low, almost bored, but edged with something dangerous.

My hands fumbled with the cups, the machine hissing louder than usual. In my rush, my elbow nudged the counter, and scalding coffee splashed across his sleeve, blooming like a stain on silk. Time slowed. The world shrank to the scent of burnt beans and the sharp, bitter tang of humiliation.

I froze, heart pounding, as Roberto, my manager, hustled forward. “Mr. Moretti—I am so, so sorry,” he babbled, snatching napkins, dabbing at the suit that cost more than my rent. Dominic just watched me, his gaze cutting through the panic. I saw the flicker of something in his eyes—not anger, but curiosity, as if he was weighing my soul in his palm.

Roberto turned to me, eyes wild. “Elena, you’re done. Leave your apron. Now.”

I stared at him, heat rising to my cheeks. Fired. Just like that. My fists clenched, but I bit back the retort burning on my tongue. Dominic’s attention didn’t waver, lips curling into the barest ghost of a smile, before he turned and strode out, leaving chaos in his wake.

Outside, the sun glared off the pavement, mocking me with its brightness. I trudged to the park, the one place I could breathe. My savings were a joke, my prospects even worse. With Marian’s illness looming overhead, losing my job felt like the final straw.

I slumped onto a bench, head in my hands, replaying the morning in endless, humiliating loops. Children shrieked by the swings, oblivious to adult disasters. That’s when I saw her—a little girl in a powder blue dress, brown curls bouncing as she darted across the grass. Her nanny, Sofia, scrolled through her phone, barely glancing up.

The girl circled my bench, watching me with wide, clever eyes. She appeared no more than six, her features delicate but lively, as if she’d stepped out of a storybook. She held out a packet of animal crackers, her voice soft but insistent. “You look sad. Want some?”

I hesitated, then accepted, the sweetness almost painful after the bitterness of my day. She climbed onto the bench beside me, swinging her legs. “My name’s Bella. My daddy’s very busy.”

Her gaze was intent, as if searching for secrets in my face. “Do you have a mommy?”

I swallowed, the question hitting a bruise I’d hidden for years. “I did. She’s gone.”

Bella nodded solemnly, then brightened. “I don’t have a mommy, either. Maybe you could be mine! You could marry my papa and live with us. He needs someone who smiles.”

I laughed, startled by the absurdity—and the sincerity in her eyes. “That’s a big job for someone you just met.”

She shrugged, undeterred. “You’re nice. And you’re not scared of Papa.”

A black SUV rolled up, windows tinted. Sofia leaped up, shepherding Bella toward the car. The driver opened the door, and then I saw him—Dominic, stepping out, presence as commanding as ever. His gaze landed on me, assessing, a silent question hanging in the air.

Bella tugged his hand, pointing at me. “Papa, this is Elena. I want her to come home.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed. I forced myself not to flinch, meeting his stare with a defiance I didn’t feel. He said nothing, but I sensed a shift—a subtle calculation, as if he’d filed my name away for later. He ushered Bella into the car, the engine rumbling as they pulled away. I caught Sofia glancing back, her expression uncertain, almost wary.

I walked home with the uneasy feeling of being watched, the city’s noise closing in around me. That night, desperation drove me to Murphy’s Bar—a dive with sticky floors and old neon lights. Tyler was already waiting, nursing a whiskey, his posture loose but eyes sharp. He’d been my friend for two years, the kind that texts at midnight and brings soup when Marian’s fever spikes.

“Bad day?” he asked, sliding a tequila shot across the table.

“Lost my job. Might lose my apartment next.” I downed the drink, the burn grounding me.

We talked, but his jokes felt forced, too loud. He ordered round after round, voice growing sloppy, hands lingering on my arm longer than usual.

“You know,” Tyler drawled, leaning close, “I do a lot for you. You ever think about that?”

He smelled of sweat and cheap liquor, his gaze suddenly hungry. I stiffened, shifting away, but he caught my wrist, fingers digging in. “You owe me, Elena. Just a little—just let me—”

His lips crashed against mine, rough and unwanted. My survival instincts kicked in; I kneed him hard, his breath exploding in pain as he doubled over. I bolted, the night air sharp in my lungs as I fled to my battered Civic, hands shaking as I started the engine.

I drove aimlessly, headlights carving shaky paths through the dark. Betrayal pressed down on me, heavier than any bill or eviction notice. Even Tyler—my safe place—had become another threat.

As I pulled into my driveway, alone and bruised inside, a black SUV idled across the street, engine purring like a predator waiting for its moment. I couldn’t see the driver, but my skin prickled with the certainty that Dominic Moretti hadn’t forgotten my face—or Bella’s words.

And as I slipped inside, heart pounding, the question lingered: had I just stumbled into something far more dangerous than a spilled cup of coffee?
