Chapter 3

He was there when I arrived.

I saw him from half a block away. Dark coat, no tie, standing outside the building entrance like a man who'd forgotten how doors work. He hadn't shaved. His hair was wrong. Anthony Griffin, who I knew from photographs as someone composed and careful, looked like he'd been turned inside out overnight.

I slowed my pace slightly. Not from hesitation. Just to finish the observation.

He spotted me and straightened. That involuntary reflex — the spine pulling upright, the hands stilling — told me he'd been rehearsing whatever came next.

I walked up and stopped in front of him.

"Natalie." His voice was rough at the edges. Like he'd been using it too much or not at all.

"You look terrible," I said. Factual, not unkind.

Something crossed his face. He pushed through it. "I need you to hear something. Jolene — there was no cancer. There was never any cancer. The records were falsified. All of it." He stopped. Swallowed. "I made a catastrophic mistake."

I looked at him. He meant the drug. The divorce. The chapel with the string quartet and the white flowers on every surface. The five years of my life he'd handed back to me empty.

He reached into his coat pocket. His hand was shaking — not dramatically, just a fine, constant tremor he couldn't quite control. He pressed something into my palm. A small capsule in a sealed blister pack. Clinical packaging. Lab-printed label.

"It's a restoration compound," he said. "Theorized to reverse the amnesia drug. I found it in cold storage last night." He looked at me with an expression I didn't have a name for — desperate and terrified and something almost like hope, which seemed, under the circumstances, like a profound miscalculation. "Please. Just try it."

I looked at the capsule. Then at him.

He'd been in his lab at — what, midnight? Two in the morning? Using an access card he probably should have surrendered. Pulling an untested compound from cold storage. Driving here and standing on a sidewalk until dawn because he didn't know what else to do.

I found the whole sequence clinically interesting.

I pressed the blister pack open, put the capsule on my tongue, and swallowed it with the last of my coffee.

He watched me the way you watch a test result loading.

I waited. Thirty seconds. A minute. The morning traffic moved past us. Someone's phone rang across the street.

I looked at his face — the dark eyes, the careful bone structure I'd studied in a dozen photographs — and felt exactly what I'd felt before. Which was nothing. A clean, untroubled nothing, like a room where all the furniture has been removed and you've stopped reaching for chairs.

"It didn't work," I said.

The hope on his face didn't collapse all at once. It went slowly, the way a building goes — one support at a time.

"Give it time," he said. "It might need time."

I considered pointing out that he'd just given me an untested pharmaceutical on a public sidewalk. Instead I said, "I have a nine o'clock," and walked inside.

---

He called that afternoon. Then twice the next morning. On the third call, I picked up.

"There's a professor," he said. "Richard Hale. He ran the original trials on the amnesia compound. I want him to look at a scan. Just to understand what's happening neurologically." A pause. "Will you come?"

I thought about it for approximately four seconds.

"Fine," I said.

I was curious. That was the honest answer. The whole situation had the quality of a case study I'd been dropped into the middle of, and I wanted to understand the mechanism.

---

The university lab smelled like recycled air and old coffee. Professor Hale was a compact man with reading glasses pushed up on his forehead who looked at Anthony with the particular wariness of someone watching a former colleague unravel in real time.

The scan took twenty minutes. I lay still and listened to the machine and thought about the quarterly report I needed to finish.

Afterward, Hale pulled Anthony into the corridor. I sat on the exam bench and looked at the scan images on the screen. I couldn't read them technically, but I found the shapes interesting.

Through the glass partition, I watched Hale's face. Watched him frown at the images. Watched him say something that made Anthony go very still.

Anthony came back in. His expression had shifted. The raw fracture from the sidewalk was still there, but underneath it now — something else. Something that looked almost like resolve.

"He thinks the amnesia compound may have caused structural changes," Anthony said carefully. "That restoration could be gradual. That it might take time."

I looked at him.

He was holding onto the word *gradually* like it was the last solid thing in a room that had lost all its furniture.

"Okay," I said.

I picked up my coat and my bag. I thanked Professor Hale on my way out. I walked to my car in the thin afternoon light and sat for a moment with both hands in my lap.

Gradually.

I pressed my thumb once against the inside of my wrist.

Then I started the car and drove back to work.
