Chapter 4

The flowers appeared on Monday.

I came in through the lobby and saw them on the reception desk. White roses. A dozen. The card was still attached. I didn't read it. I walked past and heard Carla at the front desk say something to the delivery person about the third arrangement this week.

By Wednesday, Anthony had moved from flowers to showing up in person.

I was at my desk when Melissa leaned over the partition. Her voice had that bright, tight quality that meant she'd been waiting to tell someone.

"He's downstairs," she said. "Again."

I looked up from the quarterly projections.

"Security asked him to wait outside," she continued. "He's been there forty minutes."

I saved the document and went back to the spreadsheet.

Melissa lingered. "Aren't you going to—"

"No."

She blinked. Then she went back to her desk. I heard her pick up the phone thirty seconds later. Heard her voice drop into that conspiratorial register. By lunch, half the floor would know.

---

He called that afternoon. I let it go to voicemail.

I listened to it later, on my way to the parking garage. His voice was careful and unsteady at the same time, like someone reading from a script they'd written too fast.

"I was thinking about the apartment on Maple Street. Our first place. You hated the kitchen tile. You said it looked like a hospital. We spent an entire Saturday covering it with contact paper and you laughed so hard you couldn't breathe."

A pause. Traffic sounds behind him.

"I just thought you should know I remember. I remember all of it."

I deleted the message and got in my car.

---

The break room had become a kind of theater.

I went in Thursday morning to refill my coffee and found Melissa at the table with two other colleagues. They went quiet when I walked in. Not the guilty quiet of people caught talking. The fascinated quiet of people watching a situation unfold in real time.

Melissa recovered first. "He brought you coffee this morning. Carla said he knew your exact order."

"Did she throw it away?" I asked.

"She put it in the break room fridge."

I poured my coffee. Added cream. Stirred once.

"You're not going to drink it?" someone asked.

I looked at her. "No."

I walked back to my desk. Behind me, the conversation resumed immediately. I heard Melissa's voice, lower now but still carrying: "I mean, he divorced her and married someone else. And now he's acting like she's the one who left."

Someone else said something I didn't catch. Then Melissa again: "It's pathetic. That's what it is."

I sat down and opened the report I'd been drafting. My hands were steady. My chest was quiet.

I pressed my thumb once against the inside of my wrist and kept working.

---

Diane Coleman called me into her office Friday afternoon.

She didn't waste time. She gestured to the chair across from her desk and waited until I sat.

"I've been reviewing your output over the past six weeks," she said. "The client acquisition strategy you drafted last month was the strongest pitch we've seen in two years. The quarterly projections you turned in Wednesday were exactly what I needed, three days ahead of schedule."

I waited.

"There's a regional director position opening in the London office," she said. She was watching me closely now. Not unkindly. Just carefully. "It's not posted yet. But I wanted you to know it's coming."

I let that settle. London. A full regional role. The kind of position I'd been aiming for before I'd quietly stopped aiming for anything except keeping a marriage intact.

"What's the scope?" I asked.

"Full operational oversight for the European market. You'd be building the team from the ground up. Reporting directly to the VP."

"Timeline?"

"Interviews start in six weeks. Placement by end of quarter."

I looked at her. She was still watching me with that same careful attention.

"I'd like to be considered," I said.

She made a note. Then she looked up and smiled — brief, certain, the smile of someone who'd just confirmed a suspicion.

"Good," she said.

I stood. At the door, I stopped.

"Thank you," I said.

She nodded once. "You've earned it."

---

I stayed late that night. The office emptied out around six. By seven, it was just me and the hum of the overhead lights and the blue glow of my screen.

I pulled up the job description Diane had sent. Read it twice. Made notes in the margin about team structure and market entry strategy.

London.

I thought about it. A new city. A new role. A life built entirely on my own terms, with no one else's needs weighing the architecture down.

My phone buzzed. Another voicemail. I didn't listen to it.

I saved the document, shut down my laptop, and walked out into the cool evening air.

Anthony was across the street.

He was leaning against a streetlight with his hands in his pockets, watching the building entrance the way you watch for someone you're afraid won't come. When he saw me, he straightened.

I looked at him once. Then I got in my car and drove home.

In the rearview mirror, I watched him standing there under the streetlight, getting smaller and smaller, until he disappeared completely.
