My Mate Broke My Hand for His Luna Chapter 1

The bond cracked open at 7:42 on a Thursday night, right between my fourth rib and my spine.

I was loading the last crate of gauze into the back of Mr. Hollis's borrowed truck when the pulse hit—dark cedar, iron, smoke, five years of silence detonating under my skin. My knees folded. My forehead smacked the wet tailgate. For one blank second I couldn't tell if I'd been shot.

Julian.

I pressed my palm flat to the cold metal and forced air through my teeth. The mark on the back of my neck—the one that had been dead cold since I was nineteen—throbbed once, hot, then went cold again, as if something inside it had tried to open its eyes and been slapped shut. In my chest, the familiar low-grade contempt he always leaked through the bond spiked suddenly, sharpened, personal.

He'd seen me.

I straightened. Rain ran down the back of my neck and under my collar. Across the street, between two parked cars, Julian Ford stood very still. Six-four. Black coat. Rainwater sliding off him like he was carved from something that didn't absorb weather. The streetlight above him flickered, buzzed, flickered.

His nostrils flared.

I picked up the last box.

He crossed the street in six long strides. Humans scattered without knowing why—a woman on her phone stepped sideways into a puddle, a delivery guy veered his bike into the gutter. By the time Julian reached me, the sidewalk around the truck was empty.

"Vivian." The Alpha tone slid under the name like a wire under skin.

I set the box in the truck bed and did not turn around.

"Look at me."

"No."

The word came out level. I was proud of that. My right hand was shaking so hard I had to curl it against my thigh.

He moved so he was in my line of sight anyway. Up close, his scent was worse. It wrapped around my throat and squeezed. Underneath it, faint and sickly sweet, was Jocelyn's rosewater, soaked into his collar.

My stomach rolled.

"You don't get to breathe this close to Ironveil." His voice dropped lower. The streetlight above us popped and died. "Who told you Portland was open territory?"

"No one told me anything. I work here."

"Not anymore."

He pulled his phone out of his coat pocket. Thumbed a contact. Lifted it to his ear without breaking eye contact.

"Hollis." One word, Alpha-weighted. On the other end I heard a man's voice stutter into static. "The woman loading your truck tonight. Vivian Pierce. She's done. Effective now. If she walks back into your warehouse I'll know about it."

A pause. A thin, shaking "Yes, sir, yes, of course, sir—"

Julian ended the call. Slid the phone back into his coat.

Then he pushed.

It came through the bond in a slow, deliberate wave—disgust, concentrated, aimed. Not the dull background hum I'd lived under for five years. This was him choosing. Dragging the blade down my sternum one inch at a time, watching to see if I'd flinch.

I flinched. Once. A twitch at the corner of my mouth.

Something deep under my ribs stirred. Something that had never stirred before. A low vibration, warning, like a growl heard through water. My wolf—the wolf everyone had told me didn't exist—shifted inside me and went still again, listening.

Julian's eyes narrowed a fraction. He felt something. He didn't know what.

"Say something, Pierce."

I picked up my keys. "Move."

He didn't move. I walked around him, climbed into the cab, pulled the door shut, and started the engine. In the side mirror he was still standing there in the dead streetlight, head tilted, nostrils working.

I drove four blocks before I pulled over, put the truck in park, and gripped the steering wheel until the tendons in my forearms screamed. I did not cry. I counted to sixty, twice. Then I drove home.

—

The trailer was dark except for the lamp over Caiden's cot. He was coughing when I came in, a wet, tearing sound that ended with him spitting red into a rag he tried to hide under the blanket.

"Hey." He smiled at me. Fifteen years old in his face, nineteen in his eyes. "You're wet."

"It's raining." I knelt beside the cot and pressed my bare right hand against his chest, over his heart, where the violet veining had crawled another half-inch toward his throat this week. "Breathe out."

He breathed out. I pulled.

The wolfsbane came up through my palm in a thin, oily thread—less than last time. My fingers started trembling at the thirty-second mark. At sixty I had to stop or I'd pass out on top of him.

Caiden's eyes were already closing. "How was work."

"Fine."

"Liar."

"Sleep."

He slept. I sat on the floor beside the cot for a long time, staring at the clinic report on the crate: *organ deterioration accelerating. Four to six weeks without pack-grade intervention.*

My phone buzzed.

Ironveil seal in the header. A banquet summons. Omega servant. Payment attached—exactly, to the dollar, what Caiden's next treatment cycle cost.

The thing under my ribs vibrated again. Warning. Low.

I typed back one word. *Confirmed.*

I set the phone face-down.

Tires crunched gravel outside. Headlights swept the trailer wall. A car door slammed, heels on wet stone, and then a knock—three sharp raps, manicured.

"Vivian, sweetheart." Jocelyn's voice, syrup-sweet through the thin door. "Open up. We have so much to discuss before the wedding."

I stood.
