Chapter 3

Alexander appeared at the edge of the crowd like a figure stepping out of a magazine spread. His navy suit was perfectly tailored, his champagne flute catching the light as he laughed at something the gray-haired executive beside him said. Then his eyes found me.

The laugh died on his face.

For a split second, everything stopped. His jaw tightened. His fingers went white around the stem of his glass. The executive kept talking, oblivious, but Alexander wasn't listening anymore. He was staring at me like I was a grenade that had just rolled across the polished floor.

He excused himself with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. The crowd parted as he moved toward me, his stride purposeful. When his hand closed around my elbow, his grip was firm enough to bruise.

'Outside,' he said through his teeth. 'Now.'

He steered me down a side hallway, away from the glass doors and the music and the watching eyes. The corridor was dimly lit, lined with closed office doors. My boots squeaked against the tile. His cologne filled my nose—the same one I'd bought him for his birthday.

When we were far enough from the party, he released my arm and turned on me. His face was a mask of controlled fury.

'What the hell are you doing here?' His voice was low, tight, venomous. 'Do you have any idea what tonight is?'

'I know exactly what tonight is,' I said. My voice shook but I held his gaze. 'It's the night you finally get everything you wanted.'

'Then why—' He stopped himself, glancing back toward the party. When he looked at me again, his expression had shifted into something colder. 'You need to leave. Right now.'

'I know about Priscilla.'

The words hung between us.

Alexander's jaw worked. 'You don't know anything.'

'I know about the hotel.' I pulled the envelope from my coat, my hands trembling. 'I know about Saturday night. The Uber receipt. The one that picked you both up from her apartment at 11:47 PM.'

His eyes flicked to the envelope, then back to my face.

'I have proof,' I continued. My throat felt tight. 'Screenshots. Receipts. Everything.'

For one suspended second, his mask slipped. Something moved behind his eyes—something calculating and cold, like he was running numbers in his head. Weighing options. Measuring consequences.

Then he straightened his tie. Smoothed his lapel. Glanced back toward the party floor where the music still played and the champagne still flowed.

He made his decision.

'Olivia,' he said slowly, like he was speaking to a child. 'I think you need help.'

The floor tilted beneath me. 'What?'

He turned away from me, back toward the open office floor. His shoulders squared. When he spoke again, his voice was louder—composed, clear, carrying easily across the space.

'I'm sorry, everyone.'

Heads turned. Conversations stopped. The music seemed to dim.

Alexander addressed the watching crowd with the same calm authority he used in board meetings. 'I don't actually know this woman. She's been sending messages to my office for months.' He shook his head, his expression settling into performed regret. 'It's a sensitive situation.'

My breath stopped.

'She's not well,' he added.

The words landed like a physical blow. The hallway spun. Faces stared at me from the party floor—some curious, some uncomfortable, some already nodding in understanding.

Priscilla materialized at Alexander's side like she'd been waiting for her cue. Her hand settled on his arm, fingers curling possessively around his sleeve. Her voice dripped with theatrical sympathy, loud enough for everyone to hear.

'Oh, Alexander, I'm so sorry you have to deal with this tonight of all nights.' She looked at him with wide, concerned eyes. 'You've worked so hard. You don't deserve this.'

He covered her hand with his own. 'Thank you,' he said softly.

I stared at them. At the way they stood together, a united front. At the way the crowd had shifted, forming a wall between me and them. At the way Alexander looked at me now—like I was a stranger. A problem. A threat.

'That's not true,' I said. My voice came out thin and desperate. 'We've been together for three years. Three years.'

Finnegan stepped forward, his expression twisted with exaggerated concern. 'Ma'am, I think you should leave before this gets worse.'

'I have proof,' I repeated, raising the envelope higher. The papers inside rustled. 'I can show you. I can show all of you.'

Alexander's eyes met mine. Cold. Empty. Like looking into a frozen lake.

'Security,' he said quietly. 'Someone call security.'
