8.1 / 10.0
A romantic anniversary dinner in a Brooklyn apartment turns to ashes in this billionaire romance novel. After three years of devotion, she prepares to celebrate her boyfriend Alexander's major promotion, only for a sudden social media notification to shatter her world. A tagged photo of him at an opulent luxury lounge exposes his devastating betrayal, forcing her to confront his secret life before he ever discovers her true identity as a wealthy heiress.

My Boyfriend Dumped Me Before Learning I'm the Heiress Chapter 1

I arranged the candles on our small dining table, the soft glow casting dancing shadows across the walls of my modest Brooklyn apartment. The bottle of Cabernet—Alexander's favorite—sat open beside two wine glasses, breathing as I'd learned from the sommelier at that little Italian place where he first told me he loved me. Three years together, and tonight was special. Tomorrow, he'd be announced as Director, the promotion we'd talked about for months. I wanted this celebration to be perfect.

My phone buzzed as I adjusted the vase of fresh peonies. A notification from Instagram. I smiled, expecting another work post from Alexander, always so careful about his professional image. Instead, my thumb hovered over a tagged photo that made my blood freeze.

There he was, my Alexander, in the opulent lounge of the Mandarin Oriental. His arm was draped around Priscilla Cruz's shoulders, her body angled toward him with that practiced intimacy women use when staking a claim. Her red lips were inches from his ear, his smile loose and unguarded in a way I hadn't seen in months. The caption read: 'Celebrating early with the future Director! #PowerCouple #Success'.

My fingers trembled as I screenshotted the image, watching as the post vanished seconds later. Deleted. As if it had never existed. But the imprint was seared into my retinas, into my chest, burning away the careful dinner I'd prepared.

'One photo,' I whispered to the empty apartment. 'It could be anything.'

But my hands moved with a mind of their own, reaching for the tablet we shared for bills and groceries. I opened his email—we'd never bothered with separate accounts for mundane things. And there it was, an Uber receipt from last Saturday night. The night he'd kissed me goodbye, claiming he needed to 'crush this Hudson Yards pitch' and would be 'pulling an all-nighter with the team.'

The receipt showed a ride for two. Departing from Priscilla's building in Midtown. Arriving at the Mandarin Oriental. 11:47 PM.

Three years of memories crashed through me like a tsunami. His late nights. The sudden 'emergencies' that pulled him away. The way he'd stopped wanting me to drop by his office. How he'd grown distant, distracted, always checking his phone.

I moved through our apartment like a ghost, gathering evidence I'd never thought to keep. Printed screenshots of texts where he'd sworn his love. Photos of us at Central Park, at his mother's house, at my father's—though he never knew who my father really was. I'd hidden that part of me, wanting him to love me for me, not for Gardner Holdings.

The printer hummed in the corner as I fed it page after page. The dinner I'd prepared—his favorite pasta, the garlic bread he loved—sat untouched on the counter, the candles now burned halfway down.

I slipped on my coat, the envelope of evidence heavy in my hand, and stepped into the cold Brooklyn night. The cab was waiting, its meter running as I slid into the backseat.

'Manhattan,' I said, my voice steadier than I felt. 'The Gardner Building.'

As we crossed the bridge, the city lights blurred through my tears. I pulled out my phone and called Rachel, my closest friend from my early intern days. She answered on the second ring.

'Liv? What's wrong? You sound...' Her voice trailed off.

'I found something,' I said, staring at the East River below, its black surface glittering with reflected lights. 'Alexander's been lying to me.'

'Wait,' Rachel's voice sharpened. 'Don't do anything crazy. Where are you going?'

'To his promotion party,' I replied, watching the Manhattan skyline grow closer. 'He's been sleeping with Priscilla Cruz.'

'Olivia, please. Wait until tomorrow. Don't confront him like this. Not in public.'

I closed my eyes, remembering his words from just three nights ago. 'You're the only thing that makes any of this worth it,' he'd whispered, his hands warm against my face. The perfect lie.

'I'll call you later,' I said, and ended the call.

The cab merged into Manhattan traffic, carrying me toward the truth I'd been blind to for so long. Toward the man I thought I knew. Toward the life I thought we were building.

And toward the moment everything would change.
