Chapter 4

Nobody moved.

The music from the party felt very far away. I stood in that hallway with thirty pairs of eyes on me, and I watched them decide what I was. Unstable. Obsessed. Pathetic. I could see it happening in real time — the small nods, the exchanged glances, the way shoulders turned slightly away from me.

Finnegan cleared his throat. 'Actually,' he said, loud enough to carry, 'I'm pretty sure I've seen her name flagged in HR before.' He nodded slowly, like he was remembering something important. 'Yeah. Definitely. There were some concerns.'

A woman near the bar whispered to the man beside her. He raised his eyebrows and looked at me. Then away.

Alexander stood with Priscilla's hand still on his arm. He didn't look at me anymore. He was already scanning the room, checking the damage, calculating the recovery. That was all I was to him now. Damage to be managed.

Three years.

Three years of his coffee order memorized. Three years of sitting up with him when the Hudson Yards pitch kept him awake at 2 AM. Three years of pretending I didn't have a father who could buy this entire building.

My hands stopped shaking.

Something went very still inside me.

I reached into my coat.

The envelope was thick. I'd printed everything — the Instagram screenshot before it was deleted, the Uber receipt with both pickup locations visible, the text thread where he called me 'the only thing worth fighting for,' photos of us at his mother's house in Connecticut, at the Central Park boathouse, at the restaurant where he proposed we move in together. Dates on every single one.

I walked to the nearest colleague — a woman I recognized from the third-floor analytics team — and placed a stack of papers in her hands.

'We've been together for three years,' I said. My voice cracked on the last word but I kept going. 'I have every receipt. Every message. Look at the dates.'

I moved to the next person. And the next.

The room shifted. Not much. But enough.

The analytics woman was staring at the Uber receipt, her brow furrowed. The man beside her leaned over to look. Someone else took a photo from my hand and held it toward the light.

Alexander's jaw went tight.

Priscilla's smile flickered.

Finnegan looked at Alexander like a dog waiting to be told what to do.

I kept distributing the papers. My heart was slamming against my ribs but my feet kept moving, one step at a time, because stopping meant it was over and I was not done.

'Those are fabricated,' Alexander said. His voice was still controlled, but there was an edge in it now. A splinter in the wood. 'Anyone can mock up a screenshot.'

'The Uber receipt has a confirmation number,' I said without looking at him. 'Call Uber. Verify it.'

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Alexander stepped forward.

He crossed the floor in four strides, reached past me, and snatched the papers from the colleague's hands. One sharp motion, and the documents tore — a clean, violent rip that cut through the noise of the room. He let the pieces fall.

He turned to me.

I still had the envelope.

His eyes dropped to it.

'Give me that,' he said quietly.

'No.'

His hand shot out and closed around my wrist. His grip was hard, fingers digging in, and I felt the small bones compress. I pulled back instinctively, twisting away, and for one second I almost had my arm free.

Then his other hand grabbed me above the elbow.

He twisted.

The pain was white and total. It started at my shoulder and detonated outward, up my neck and down to my fingertips, and I heard a sound come out of my mouth that I didn't recognize as my own voice. My knees buckled. The envelope hit the floor, papers scattering across the polished tile.

The room went absolutely silent.

Finnegan was already moving. He grabbed my other arm, his fingers digging in hard, and together they pushed me backward — toward the supply closet at the end of the hall, its door hanging slightly open. Priscilla stepped forward, blocking the view from the party floor, her body a wall between me and the watching crowd.

'Stop—' I gasped.

My shoulder was wrong. Something in it was wrong. The pain was a living thing, radiating, and my vision was going gray at the edges.

'You should have left when you had the chance,' Alexander said. His voice was very quiet. Almost gentle.

The closet door swung open.

And then — a sound.

A soft chime.

The private elevator at the end of the corridor slid open.
