He Used My Fortune to Marry My Best Friend, So I Ruined Their Wedding Chapter 1

CLAIRE'S POV

The pearl comb slipped twice before it finally caught.

I slid it into the crown of my veil and checked the angle in the mirror. My mother wore that comb on her own wedding day, thirty-one years ago, and I'd been carrying it in my purse for weeks like a good-luck charm. One week left. One week until I walked down the aisle in the dress Ryan Mercer had designed for me.

His original sketch sat under the glass top of the vanity in his atelier. It was pencil on cheap printer paper, drawn the night he proposed. He'd smudged the waistline with his thumb and written *Claire, always* in the corner.

His phone lit up on the velvet chair beside me.

I didn't mean to read it. It was face up, and the name was one I'd known since school.

**Lily:** Montauk house is ours. I can't wait to wake up beside you after the ceremony.

I actually smiled. Lily had been my best friend for twelve years, and she'd been whispering with Ryan about "honeymoon logistics" for a month. A rental, I figured. Some ridiculous surprise.

Then a second notification slid in under the first.

**Closing complete — 14 Dune Hollow Rd, Montauk, NY. Title recorded: Lily Hart as sole owner.**

The smile stayed on my face a second too long. Sole owner. Not *ours*. Not mine.

The door opened behind me, and Ryan came in with two flutes of champagne. He saw where I was looking. He set the glasses down, picked up the phone, and laid it face down on the table.

"Who bought a house in Montauk?" I asked.

"Lily is helping with a surprise." He tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, careful of the veil. "Don't turn her kindness into something ugly."

"The alert says she owns it."

"It's paperwork, Claire. You're reading a bank notification like it's a confession."

He smiled the way he always did when I was being unreasonable. Usually that smile worked on me.

I unpinned the veil and laid it over the back of the chair. "Fine. Then it won't matter if I check the wedding account."

He laughed, but he didn't stop me.

His laptop sat open at the drafting table, already logged into our shared wedding account and the trust portal behind it. I scrolled back three months. Three payments, each labeled in Ryan's neat shorthand.

*Venue security.* Ninety-two thousand dollars, paid to Halvorsen Fine Jewelers.

*Jewelry insurance.* Four hundred thousand, paid to Mercer-Hart Holdings.

*Temporary investment.* Paid to Bayside Title & Escrow, Montauk.

I sent all of it to the printer in the corner. The machine whirred while Ryan stood behind me sipping champagne, unbothered.

The jeweler's invoice came out last. The billing name wasn't mine.

*Lily Hart.*

"Venue security," I said, "goes to a jewelry store, billed to Lily."

Ryan took the pages out of my hand before I'd finished reading them. "You gave me authority because you hate dealing with money. Don't punish Lily because you're nervous about getting married."

"I'm not nervous."

"You signed the limited investment authorization yourself. In March. You said, and I quote, 'Just handle it, I trust you.'" He folded the ledger in half. "So let me handle it."

I had said that. I remembered the pen, the kitchen counter, his hand warm on my back.

I also remembered the weekend in April he canceled because a client "melted down" in Philly. The bottle of gardenia perfume I'd found rolling under the passenger seat of his car, Lily's scent. He'd said she left it after he drove her to the airport. And the car-wash receipt I'd pulled out of his console the same day, still sticky where the perfume had leaked on it, stamped with an East Hampton address on a Saturday he swore he spent in Philadelphia.

I'd kept that receipt in my wallet for two months without knowing why.

Every one of those things had an explanation on its own. Laid side by side with the ledger, they had dates. And the dates matched.

Ryan's phone buzzed again. He glanced at the screen and his jaw tightened. "I need to take this. Drink your champagne. Breathe."

He stepped out onto the back stairwell, and the door swung shut behind him.

His private office was across the hall. The door was open. A green folder sat on the desk, the key to the file drawer still sitting in the lock beside it.

I opened the folder.

The deed was on top. 14 Dune Hollow Road. Grantee: Lily Hart. Under it, a wire confirmation from my family trust to Mercer-Hart Holdings. Three million, six hundred thousand dollars. A second wire, the same week, from Mercer-Hart to Bayside Title.

Clipped behind them was an insurance appraisal for an eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring. Beneficiary: Lily Hart.

My engagement ring was a little over one carat. Ryan said he'd wanted something "tasteful."

The last item was a memo from his accountant. *Proposed trust reallocation — Mercer-Hart / Montauk acquisition.* It was dated four months ago, three weeks before he sat me down at the kitchen counter with a pen.

He hadn't stumbled into this. He'd planned it, and then he'd asked me to sign.

"Claire."

Ryan stood in the doorway, phone still in his hand. He looked at the folder, then at me. He didn't rush over. He didn't even look worried.

"It's an investment," he said.

"In Lily's name."

"Lily understands what I'm building. She knows people. She's helped me more with Mercer-Hart in six months than—" He stopped, then decided to finish anyway. "Than you ever wanted to."

"With my money."

He sighed like I was a client who refused to approve a hemline. "By next week you'll be my wife. Stop acting like there's still a difference between your money and mine."

I waited for the part where he apologized. It didn't come.

So I stopped asking.

I took out my phone and photographed the deed, then the wires, then the appraisal and the memo, one page at a time. Ryan watched with his arms crossed, like I was being childish. When the last photo uploaded to my encrypted drive, I closed the folder and set it exactly where I'd found it.

"I need the restroom," I said.

He stepped aside.

In the hallway, I dug through my wallet past the perfume-stained receipt until I found a stiff ivory business card. *Martin Osei, Trust Counsel.* My father had pressed it into my hand at his retirement party and said, *If anything ever feels wrong, you call Martin first.*

He picked up on the second ring.

"Martin, it's Claire. I need every authorization Ryan Mercer holds on my trust revoked. Today. And freeze anything that hasn't moved yet."

He didn't ask why. I heard keys clicking. "Most of the liquid assets have already left the trust. I'm sorry. But there's a pending transfer scheduled for Friday, and I can stop that. I can lock the rest."

"Do it."

"Sending confirmation within the hour."

When I went back into the atelier, Ryan was leaning against the vanity, refilling his glass. My veil hung on the chair. The sketch glowed under the glass, *Claire, always*, in his handwriting.

I twisted my engagement ring off. It came free easily, like it had never really fit.

There was a small velvet box on the vanity, the kind his studio used for sample buttons. I set the ring inside and snapped it shut.

Ryan's finger stopped on the rim of his glass. "What is this? Are you really going to make a scene a week before the wedding?"

"No scene."

"Then what are you doing?"

I dropped the box into my purse beside my mother's comb.

"I'm not being dramatic, Ryan. I'm changing what you still have access to."

He laughed once, but it came out thin.

My phone buzzed. A new email from Martin Osei sat at the top of my inbox, the subject line in capital letters.

**ACCESS REVOKED.**

I turned the screen so Ryan could read it, and for the first time since I'd known him, he didn't have anything to say.
