Chapter 2

The kitchen work started the next morning.

No one announced it formally. The Beta simply appeared at my door at dawn with a folded apron and told me I'd be assigned to meal service until further notice. His eyes didn't quite meet mine.

I took the apron.

The work itself wasn't complicated. Clear plates. Refill water. Stand at the perimeter of the dining hall while the ranked wolves ate. Keep my head down. Keep my hands busy. Don't speak unless spoken to.

I did it without reaction.

On the first day, I cataloged who looked away. Sera Voss, the mid-ranked she-wolf who used to ask about my mother's recipes, stared at her plate the entire meal. Her shoulders were tight, her jaw set, like she was bracing against something. When I reached past her to clear a dish, she flinched.

I moved on.

The Gamma's mate performed contempt with precision. She wrinkled her nose when I approached, made a show of shifting her chair away, and spoke just loud enough for the table to hear: "I hope the new Luna hires proper staff soon. This is beneath Ironveil's standards."

Marley, seated at the head table beside Greyson, smiled thinly and said nothing.

I cleared the Gamma's mate's plate without meeting her eyes. My hands were steady.

The whisper inside me—the thing that had replaced my wolf, or maybe was my wolf in some form I didn't recognize yet—didn't rage. It observed. It recorded. It filed each face, each gesture, each micro-expression into a mental ledger I didn't know I was building.

*This one looked away in shame. This one performed cruelty to prove loyalty. This one said nothing and let it happen.*

By the third day, I could predict who would avert their eyes and who would make a point of watching me work. The pattern was clear. The ones who felt guilty couldn't hold my gaze. The ones who wanted Marley's favor made sure I saw them ignore me.

I learned more in those three days than I had in seven years as Luna.

On the fourth morning, I was carrying a tray of dirty dishes through the corridor outside the kitchens when I heard Marcus Hale's voice.

"—finalized it last night," he was saying. "The Spencer territory goes to the Blackridge Pack as part of the eastern alliance. Clean transfer. No complications."

I stopped walking.

The other warrior—someone I didn't recognize—laughed. "Generous of the Alpha. That's prime hunting ground."

"Strategic," Marcus corrected. "Blackridge controls the eastern pass. We need their cooperation more than we need empty land."

Empty land.

My parents were buried there. In the grove near the old pack house, beneath the oak trees my mother had planted when she was sixteen. The ground wasn't empty. It was sacred.

And Greyson had traded it.

The tray in my hands started to shake. I looked down and watched the dishes rattle against each other, a thin high sound that seemed very far away. My fingers were white where they gripped the metal edges.

Something inside me—not the whisper, something rawer—opened its mouth and screamed.

It had no voice. It had no form. It was just sound, reverberating through my chest and spine and skull with nowhere to go, a single howl that my dormant wolf couldn't release. My body tried to contain it. My ribs ached with the effort. The tray bent beneath my hands, the metal warping slowly.

I forced myself to breathe.

The warriors kept talking. They hadn't noticed me. I set the tray down carefully on a side table, straightened, and walked past them without a word.

Marcus glanced up as I passed. Our eyes met for half a second. Then he looked away.

I kept walking.

That night, there was a banquet.

The alliance with Blackridge was being celebrated formally. The dining hall had been decorated—candles, flowers, the long tables set with Ironveil's best crystal. I was assigned to serve.

I entered through the side door carrying a tray of wine glasses. The hall was already full. Alphas from three neighboring packs, their Betas and Lunas, Ironveil's ranked members. The air was thick with competing scents and the low hum of political conversation.

Greyson sat at the head table. Marley was beside him, wearing a deep green gown that made her jasmine scent even more prominent. She was laughing at something the Blackridge Alpha had said, her hand resting lightly on Greyson's arm.

Around her throat was my mother's collar.

I stopped in the doorway.

The collar was unmistakable. White gold, delicate filigree work, a single moonstone set at the center. I'd designed it myself when I was eighteen, using the stone from my mother's wedding band. It had taken me three months to get the metalwork right. I'd presented it to Greyson on the night he'd asked me to be his Luna, and he'd fastened it around my neck with hands that didn't shake.

It had been the most intimate thing I owned. A covenant. Proof that what we shared was sacred.

Marley touched the moonstone absently, mid-conversation, like she was checking to make sure it was still there. Her fingers traced the edge of the setting. She didn't look at it. It was just another piece of jewelry to her. Another asset transferred along with the title.

I set the tray down on the nearest surface. The motion was controlled. Precise. I did not look at the collar again.

For the rest of the evening, I moved through the hall like I was underwater. Clearing plates. Refilling glasses. Standing at the perimeter when I wasn't needed, my hands folded, my face blank.

The whisper threaded through me, low and continuous, like a second heartbeat.

*Remember this. Remember this. Remember this.*

I did.

Every detail. Every face. Every word. The way Marley's fingers had touched the moonstone without thought. The way Greyson hadn't looked at me once the entire night. The way the Blackridge Alpha had raised his glass and toasted "new alliances built on solid ground," and everyone had laughed.

Solid ground. My parents' graves.

I cleared the head table last. Marley handed me her empty wine glass without glancing up. The collar caught the candlelight as she turned, the moonstone glowing pale and cold.

I took the glass. Set it on my tray. Walked back to the kitchens.

When the hall finally emptied and the last dish was washed, I went back to my room on the third floor. I closed the door. Sat down on the edge of the narrow bed.

The whisper was still there. Steady. Relentless.

*Still here.*

I touched the hollow place on my neck where my mark used to be. The skin was cold. The bond was gone. My wolf was silent.

But I was still here.

And I was building a record.
