Chapter 3

I found Sera Voss in the east corridor during the midday shift change.

She was carrying linens toward the guest quarters, her head down, moving quickly. When I stepped into her path, she froze. Her eyes went wide. For a second I thought she might drop the entire stack and run.

"Sera," I said quietly.

She glanced over her shoulder. The corridor was empty, but her body language screamed that she wished it weren't. "Ellie, I—I can't—"

"The Spencer territory transfer," I interrupted. "Was it finalized in writing?"

Her face went pale. She clutched the linens tighter against her chest like they could shield her from the question. "I don't know anything about—"

"You do," I said. My voice stayed level. Calm. "You're mated to one of the Gamma's unit leaders. He would have seen the documentation. I'm not asking you to betray anyone. I just need confirmation."

She looked at me for a long moment. Something moved behind her eyes—guilt, maybe, or the last remnant of whatever friendship we'd once had. Her throat worked.

"Yes," she whispered finally. "It was finalized three days ago. Signed transfer to Blackridge. All of it."

The whisper inside me went very still.

"Thank you," I said.

Sera shifted her weight. She should have walked away. Instead she leaned in slightly, her voice dropping even lower. "Marley requested the collar personally. The morning after the ceremony. She told Greyson it would help establish continuity. That the pack needed to see the Luna title transfer completely."

My fingers curled at my sides. I didn't move otherwise.

"She knew what it meant to you," Sera added. Her eyes were wet now. "Everyone knew. She asked for it anyway."

I held her gaze. "Anything else?"

Sera hesitated. Then shook her head quickly and stepped around me, walking fast toward the guest wing. She didn't look back.

I stood in the empty corridor for thirty seconds. Counted my breaths. Let the information settle.

The whisper sharpened. Not with rage. With something colder. More precise.

*She is methodical. She plans ahead. She will have anticipated your next move.*

I started walking.

By evening, I understood exactly how methodical Marley was.

The patrol assignments had been posted in the common area that morning. I'd glanced at them without thinking much of it—until I realized that every wolf who had shown me even marginal kindness over the past week was now assigned to remote border duty. Sera's mate. The junior healer who'd left me extra bread yesterday. The older Delta who'd held a door open for me without being asked.

All of them. Scattered to the outer territories. Reassigned with warm, reasonable language about "strengthening perimeter security" and "rotating experienced personnel."

Marley's signature was at the bottom of each notice.

I stood in front of the board and read every name twice. My wolf's whisper threaded through the silence.

*She is isolating you. Removing every potential ally. Making sure no one can help you when you need it.*

I needed wolfsbane antidote components. Not for immediate use—my wolf was dormant, not poisoned. But the whisper had been insistent for two days now, pressing the thought into my mind with increasing urgency: *Prepare. You will need it. Soon.*

The pack's healer quarters were on the second floor, accessible through a side corridor most wolves avoided. I'd been there dozens of times as Luna. I knew where the medicinal stores were kept.

I reached the door at dusk.

It was locked.

Not casually locked. Reinforced. A new bolt had been installed, heavy and deliberate. Through the narrow window I could see the shelves inside—reorganized, half-empty. Someone had cleared out the sensitive materials.

I tried the handle once. It didn't budge.

A voice came from behind me. "Healer Moss was reassigned this morning."

I turned.

The Beta stood three feet away, his expression carefully neutral. "He's been sent to assist the Blackridge Pack with their clinic setup. Part of the alliance terms. He'll be gone for at least two months."

"I see," I said.

The Beta shifted his weight. "If you need medical attention, you can submit a formal request through Luna Marley's office. She'll arrange—"

"That won't be necessary," I said.

He nodded slowly. Then walked away.

I stood in front of the locked door for another minute. My reflection stared back at me from the window glass—pale, hollow-eyed, thinner than I'd been a month ago.

The whisper was right. Marley had anticipated this. She'd moved every piece off the board before I'd even reached for them.

I walked back to my room. Closed the door. Sat down on the narrow bed.

*She is smarter than you thought. You will need to be smarter than she expects.*

I was still sitting there when the summons came.

The Beta knocked twice. "The Alpha requests your presence in his study. Now."

I stood. Smoothed my dress. Followed him down the corridor without a word.

Greyson's study was on the first floor, a large room with dark wood paneling and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. He was standing behind his desk when I entered, his hands braced against the surface, his cedar-and-iron scent filling the space.

The Beta closed the door behind me and left.

Greyson didn't look up immediately. He was reading something—a document, formal-looking, with the Lycan Council seal visible at the top. After a moment he set it down and met my eyes.

"You will remain within the pack house grounds," he said. His voice was flat. Alpha-toned. "You will not attempt to contact outside packs. You will not send correspondence to Lycan Council representatives or any external authority. Any attempt to do so will be treated as a rogue act and handled accordingly."

I didn't react.

He continued. "Your current status is ward of Ironveil, under my discretion as Alpha. You have no external standing. No independent authority. You exist here because I allow it."

I held his gaze. His eyes were the same gray they'd always been. Cold now. Distant. Like he was delivering a weather report.

"Do you understand?" he asked.

I didn't answer immediately. I let the silence stretch. Watched his jaw tighten slightly.

"Yes," I said finally.

Something flickered across his face—too fast to name. Then it was gone.

"You're dismissed," he said.

I turned to leave. My hand was on the door handle when the whisper spoke. Not a whisper this time. A voice. Clear. Certain.

*He is afraid of something. Find out what.*

I paused. Looked back over my shoulder.

Greyson was still standing behind his desk, but his posture had shifted. His shoulders were tight. His hands were flat against the wood surface, fingers spread.

He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at the document on his desk. The one with the Lycan Council seal.

I turned the handle. Stepped into the corridor. Closed the door quietly behind me.

The Beta was waiting outside. He gestured for me to walk ahead of him—a silent escort back to my quarters.

I didn't speak. Neither did he.

But as we climbed the stairs to the third floor, my wolf's voice threaded through me, steady and cold.

*He locked you in. But he also locked himself to you. He is afraid someone will come asking questions. Find out who.*

I reached my room. Closed the door. Sat down on the bed.

My hands were steady. My breathing was even.

I was building a record. And now I knew what I was looking for.
