Chapter 2

The apartment had two bedrooms. Sterling took the smaller one.

I didn't ask why. He just carried his suitcase past the master suite that first night and said, "This one works for me." Like it was the most natural thing in the world. Like men married women and then slept on the other side of the apartment all the time.

I stood in the hallway and watched him unpack through the half-open door. Suits on hangers. Laptop on the desk. A single framed photo I couldn't see from that angle. He moved efficiently. No wasted motion.

"Everly," he said without turning around.

"Yes?"

"The bathroom's yours. I'll use the hall one."

I looked down at my hands. They were shaking. They'd been shaking for two weeks. "Okay."

"If you need anything—"

"I won't."

He turned then. Looked at me for a long moment. His face was calm. Unreadable. "All right," he said quietly. "Good night."

The door clicked shut.

I went to my room and locked it. Pushed a chair under the handle. Checked the window. Third floor. No fire escape on this side. I catalogued exits until my breathing slowed.

Then I lay down on top of the covers, fully dressed, and stared at the ceiling.

Sterling Fox. I barely knew him. A handshake at a charity gala three years ago. A nod across a crowded room at some art opening my father had dragged me to. And now I was living in his apartment because I had nowhere else to go and he'd offered without asking for anything in return.

No one did that.

I waited for the catch.

---

Therapy started the following Tuesday.

Dr. Renee Voss had an office in Midtown with pale blue walls and a couch that didn't look like a couch in a therapist's office. It looked like something from a nice living room. She was maybe fifty, with gray streaks in her dark hair and the kind of steady gaze that made you feel like she'd already heard worse.

"Everly," she said when I walked in. "I'm glad you're here."

I sat on the edge of the couch. Hands in my lap. "Sterling set this up."

"He did. But you're the one who walked through the door."

I didn't know what to say to that.

She didn't push. Just waited.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to talk about," I said finally.

"Whatever you want."

"What if I don't want to talk about anything?"

"Then we sit quietly for fifty minutes and try again next week."

I looked at her. "You get paid either way."

"I do." She smiled a little. "But I'd rather earn it."

I talked for thirty minutes. I don't remember most of it. When the session ended, I walked out into the waiting room and Sterling was there. Laptop open. Coffee in a paper cup on the side table.

He looked up. Closed the laptop. Stood.

"There's coffee," he said, nodding at the cup.

I picked it up. Black. No sugar. I didn't remember telling him how I took it.

We walked to the elevator in silence. He didn't ask how it went. Didn't make small talk. Just pressed the button for the lobby and stood with his hands in his pockets.

When we got to the street, he said, "I have a car waiting. But if you'd rather walk, I can send it away."

I looked at the black sedan idling at the curb. Tinted windows. Driver in front.

"Walk," I said.

"All right."

He dismissed the car with a wave. We walked twelve blocks back to the apartment. He stayed two steps behind me the whole way. Never crowded. Never touched.

I didn't realize I was testing him until we got home and I felt the tightness in my chest start to ease.

---

Six months in, I woke up at three in the morning choking on a scream I couldn't release.

The warehouse. The zip ties. The sound of the van door sliding shut. Alina's cream silk pajamas disappearing into gray morning light.

I sat up gasping. Sweat soaked through my shirt. The room was dark and I couldn't remember where I was.

A soft knock.

"Everly?"

Sterling. His voice through the door.

I tried to answer. Couldn't.

"I'm coming in. Just to the doorway."

The door opened. Light from the hall spilled across the floor. He stood in the frame, backlit, hands visible.

"You're safe," he said quietly. "You're in the apartment. It's Tuesday. Three fourteen AM."

I nodded. My hands were fists in the sheets.

"Can I sit? I won't come closer than the door."

I nodded again.

He sat down on the floor. Back against the doorframe. Long legs stretched out into the hall.

"My mother died when I was twelve," he said.

I blinked. Focused on his voice.

"There was a gala a few weeks after. I didn't want to go. My grandfather made me. Said it was important for appearances." He was quiet for a moment. "I wore my father's suit. It was too big. The sleeves hung past my hands."

I pulled my knees up to my chest. Listened.

"I stood in a corner for two hours. Watched people eat shrimp and talk about the market. No one spoke to me. I think they didn't know what to say."

His voice was steady. Calm. Like he was reading from a script he'd memorized a long time ago.

"Someone gave me candy. I don't remember who. Just that it was kind."

My breathing slowed.

"Sometimes," he said, "the only thing that gets you through is knowing someone saw you. Even if they didn't stay."

I closed my eyes. The tightness in my chest loosened.

When I opened them again, the sky outside was gray. Early light.

Sterling was gone.

There was a glass of water on the nightstand. A folded piece of paper underneath.

I unfolded it.

*Still here.*

---

I found the drafting table three weeks later.

I'd been storing my old graduate research files in the third bedroom—boxes of notes and equipment I'd salvaged from my old apartment before the landlord threw everything out. I hadn't opened them. Couldn't.

But that morning I came home from therapy and the door to the third bedroom was open.

The drafting table was set up by the window. My table. The one I'd used in grad school. It had been buried under boxes in the storage unit.

Now it was clean. Leveled. Positioned in the best light.

My boxes were stacked neatly along the wall. Labeled in my own handwriting from two years ago.

I stood in the doorway.

Sterling was in his study. I could hear the low murmur of a phone call through the wall.

I walked to the table. Ran my hand along the edge. Sat down.

The city spread out below. Afternoon sun slanted through the glass.

I pulled the nearest box toward me. Opened it. My old research notes. Water reclamation models. Half-finished calculations.

I picked up a pencil.

Three weeks later, I printed my current research abstract. Two pages. Clean.

I walked to Sterling's study and knocked.

"Come in."

He was at his desk. Laptop open. He looked up.

I set the pages down in front of him. Didn't say anything.

He glanced at the title. Then at me.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

He nodded once. "You're welcome."

I turned to go.

"Everly."

I stopped.

"It's good work," he said.

I looked back. He was already reading.

I closed the door behind me and went back to my table.
