He Gave His Mistress Our Daughter's Surgery Money—So I Took Back Our Company

8.3 / 10.0
Ethan drained his six-year-old daughter's heart-surgery fund to bankroll his mistress's brand, insisting Lily could wait. He forgot his wife built PulsePoint's diagnostic engine—and that his voting proxy dies the moment company money funds an undisclosed private investment. She calls Julian Cross, the rival who once begged her to stop letting Ethan erase her name. He restores Lily's surgery and offers the CEO seat she abandoned, but reclaiming PulsePoint exposes a forged signature and a traitor inside Julian's own company, forcing her to choose between hundreds of employees and the empire Ethan stole.

He Gave His Mistress Our Daughter's Surgery Money—So I Took Back Our Company Chapter 1

"Mommy, does it hurt when they put the sleepy mask on?"

Lily looked so tiny against the sterile white hospital sheets. At six years old, her skin was pale, her arms bruised from weeks of IV lines, but her wide hazel eyes still held the innocent trust that tore straight through my chest.

I smoothed the soft brown hair away from her forehead and forced a warm smile. "Not at all, sweetheart. You just take three big, brave breaths, and when you wake up, the bad pain in your chest will be completely gone."

"Will Daddy be here when I wake up?"

The question caught in my throat. Ethan had sworn he would be here before they wheeled her into the operating room. He had looked me dead in the eye this morning and promised that no matter what happened with the board, Lily came first.

"He's trying, baby," I whispered, kissing her temple. "Now let Mommy go sign the last few papers so Dr. Keller can get ready, okay?"

She nodded, clutching her worn stuffed rabbit to her chest.

I stepped out of the pre-op bay into the quiet corridor and walked down to the surgical billing counter. The digital clock on the wall read 9:42 AM. The surgical team was scrubbed in. This procedure was the only chance Lily had to repair the vascular defect that had slowly drained her life for two years.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," the administrative clerk said, adjusting her glasses. "We just need the final authorization from the dedicated escrow account to clear Dr. Keller's team."

"Of course," I said, handing over the account voucher. "The funds were locked in trust last month. Account ending in 4108."

The clerk tapped rapidly on her keyboard. Her brow furrowed. She clicked the mouse again, refreshed the screen, and picked up her desk phone to murmur something to accounting.

"Is there an issue?" I asked, my pulse quickening. "Ethan set up that dedicated medical fund specifically for today. He swore nobody could touch it."

The clerk set the phone down and looked up at me with genuine sympathy.

"Mrs. Vance, the escrow status changed at eight o'clock this morning. An executive override was processed using the primary account holder's security token."

"What does that mean?"

"The balance is zero," she said quietly. "The entire two hundred and fifty thousand dollars was wired out. Without the deposit, the hospital cannot release the surgical suite."

The air left my lungs in a sharp, suffocating rush. "No. That's impossible. That's Lily's surgery fund. Check it again."

"I did," she replied softly. "I'm so sorry. Unless the account is replenished or an alternative guarantee is provided, the surgery cannot proceed."

My hands trembled as I pulled out my phone. I dialed Ethan's direct line.

It rang once, twice, three times, before cutting abruptly to his corporate voicemail.

I hung up and redialed. Straight to voicemail again.

I hit call a third time, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. *Answer the damn phone, Ethan. Pick up!*

A notification banner dropped down from the top of my screen, interrupting the call:

*TECHPULSE LIVE: PulsePoint Announces Revolutionary Diagnostics Partnership with Ava Sinclair.*

My thumb froze over the glass.

I tapped the alert. The livestream loaded instantly, crisp and bright.

There was Ethan.

He stood at the center of a gleaming stage in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis, surrounded by flashing cameras and tech reporters. He was wearing the bespoke charcoal suit I had picked out for him last Christmas, looking every bit the triumphant billionaire CEO. Standing beside him in a sleek white silk dress was Ava, her hand resting intimately on the lapel of his jacket.

"PulsePoint was built on the belief that human health cannot wait," Ethan’s voice projected through the speaker, steady, charismatic, and powerful. "That is why today, I am personally committing five million dollars to back Ava's luxury diagnostic venture, Sinclair Wellness."

The room erupted into applause. Ava beamed at him, leaning up to kiss his cheek.

Ethan wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close to the microphone.

"Ava has been the driving force behind this expansion," Ethan said, looking down at her with an intensity I hadn't seen directed at me in years. "She's the woman who believed in me when no one else did."

Nausea surged through my gut.

Behind them, the massive LED backdrop displayed the core proprietary algorithm of Sinclair Wellness's platform. The architecture, the predictive diagnostics, the entire neural mapping flow—I recognized every single line.

Nine years ago, I wrote and filed that patent entirely on my own. I had built the foundational technology that made PulsePoint a multibillion-dollar giant. Two years ago, when Lily was diagnosed with a degenerative cardiac anomaly, I gave up my role as co-CEO. I stepped into the background, letting Ethan take full credit and control of the company so I could spend every waking second keeping our daughter alive.

And now, he was handing my life's work to Ava on a silver platter.

Paid for with the money meant to save our daughter's heart.

My fingers shook so hard I could barely type. I opened our private message thread.

*Ethan, the hospital account is empty. They are canceling Lily's surgery right now. Did you touch that money? Call me immediately.*

Two gray checkmarks turned blue. He was looking at the phone.

Ten seconds passed. Twenty.

A single line popped up on the screen.

*Lily can wait. Ava's launch can't.*

I stared at the words.

The cold, calculated indifference burned through my veins like ice water. Lily had been in agony for months. Her surgeon had warned us that if she didn't get this operation today, scar tissue would render the defect inoperable.

Ethan knew that. He knew it, and he chose Ava’s spotlight.

Something inside me fractured, and in the space where my heartbreak used to live, a terrifying, absolute clarity took over.

I didn't reply to him. I didn't call him again.

I backed out of the chat, opened my contacts, and scrolled down to a private encrypted number I had sworn I would never touch again.

Julian Cross.

He was Ethan's fiercest rival, the head of the Cross Medical Consortium, and a man whose offer of partnership I had turned down two years ago when I chose to walk away from corporate life.

I hit dial.

He answered on the second ring. "Nora."

His voice was low, deep, and devoid of the corporate polish Ethan wore like armor.

"Julian," I said, keeping my voice entirely level. "Are you still looking to acquire the primary rights to my bio-neural patent portfolio?"

There was a brief pause on the other end. "I've been waiting two years for that call. But you told me family came first."

"My daughter is at St. Jude's Children's Pavilion," I said, looking through the glass doors toward Lily's room. "Her surgery is scheduled for ten o'clock. Ethan just emptied her medical trust to fund Ava Sinclair's launch. I need an unconditional institutional guarantee for her entire procedure within five minutes."

"Done," Julian replied without a second of hesitation. "My legal team will wire the full medical retainer directly to St. Jude’s administration right now. What else do you need?"

"A seat at the table," I said. "And Ethan out of the picture."

"Consider it done. I'll meet you at the hospital after she's in recovery."

"Thank you, Julian."

I hung up, turned on my heel, and marched back to the administrative desk.

"Mrs. Vance?" the clerk asked, looking uncomfortable. "Dr. Keller's assistant just called. If the funds aren't cleared in three minutes, they have to release the OR to the emergency queue."

Before she could finish, the printer beside her machine suddenly whirred to life. A high-priority legal fax began rolling out.

The clerk blinked, picking up the sheet. Her eyes went wide as she stared at the screen. "An institutional medical guarantee... from the Cross Consortium? Five hundred thousand dollars fully cleared?"

"That covers today and any post-operative care she requires," I said coldly. "Now, give me the primary guardian intake forms. All of them."

"Of course," she stammered, pulling a tablet and stylus from beneath the counter.

I took the stylus. My hands were completely steady now.

I scrolled directly to the legal authorization section. With three decisive strokes, I removed Ethan Vance as an authorized decision-maker. I revoked his emergency contact privileges, stripped his access to Lily’s electronic health records, and designated myself as the sole legal guardian for medical rights. Under secondary emergency contact and institutional guarantor, I entered a single name: *Julian Cross.*

"Process it into the registry now," I said.

"Updating the national pediatric system now, Mrs. Vance," the clerk said, clicking the confirmation key.

The screen flashed green. *Authorization updated successfully.*

At that exact second, the phone in my palm vibrated violently.

It wasn't a call. It was a rapid burst of text messages from Ethan.

*What the hell did you just do?*

*The system just locked me out of Lily's portal!*

*Nora, pick up the phone right now.*

*Why is Julian Cross on my daughter's file?!*
