Chapter 3

The invitation arrived on heavy cardstock. Gold embossing. Fox Foundation Annual Gala. Black tie.

I held it at arm's length like it might catch fire.

Sterling was in his study. I knocked once and pushed the door open without waiting.

He looked up from his laptop.

I set the invitation on his desk. "I can't do this."

He glanced at it. Then back at me. "You don't have to."

"Your family will expect—"

"I don't care what they expect."

I wrapped my arms around my ribs. Old habit. "People will talk."

"They already do."

I looked at the window behind him. The city stretched out below, all glass and steel and indifference. "What do they say?"

"Nothing that matters."

"Sterling."

He closed the laptop. Leaned back in his chair. "They say I married damaged goods. That you're using me. That I'm a fool." His voice was flat. Clinical. "They say a lot of things."

My throat tightened. "Maybe they're right."

"They're not."

I turned to go.

"Everly."

I stopped. Didn't turn around.

"If you want to go," he said quietly, "I'll be there. If you don't, I'll handle it."

"How?"

"I'll tell them you're ill. Or I'll tell them the truth. Your choice."

I looked back at him. He was watching me with that steady, unreadable expression he always wore. Like he'd already calculated every possible outcome and accepted all of them.

"What's the truth?" I asked.

"That you don't owe anyone a performance."

I left without answering.

---

I wore black. Simple. Long sleeves. Nothing that would photograph well.

Sterling met me in the living room in his tuxedo. He looked like old money and cold authority. Untouchable.

"Ready?" he asked.

"No."

"We can leave whenever you want."

The car was waiting downstairs. Tinted windows. Driver who didn't make eye contact. We rode in silence.

The gala was at the Plaza. Chandeliers and champagne and people who smiled with their mouths but not their eyes. Sterling's hand hovered near my elbow as we walked in. Not touching. Just there.

A woman in diamonds intercepted us immediately. "Sterling, darling." Her gaze slid to me. Lingered. "And this must be—"

"My wife," Sterling said. His tone could have cut glass. "Everly."

The woman's smile tightened. "Of course. How lovely. You must tell me—"

"Excuse us," Sterling said, and guided me past her without waiting for a response.

We moved through the crowd like that. He didn't introduce me to anyone. Didn't stop for small talk. Just kept walking, his presence a wall between me and every curious stare.

I spotted Alina across the room.

She was in white. Silk and diamonds. Knox beside her, his hand on her waist. She saw me at the same moment I saw her.

Her smile was slow. Satisfied.

I stopped walking.

Sterling followed my gaze. His jaw tightened. "We're leaving."

"No." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "I'm fine."

"Everly—"

"I'm fine."

Alina was moving toward us now. Knox trailing behind her like a well-dressed shadow.

"Everly," she said warmly. Publicly. "I didn't know you'd be here. You look... well."

I said nothing.

Knox shifted uncomfortably. Wouldn't meet my eyes.

"It's so good to see you out," Alina continued. Her voice dripped concern. "After everything. We were so worried."

Sterling stepped forward. Not between us. Just closer. "Mrs. Matthews," he said coldly. "Enjoy your evening."

He turned. Waited for me.

I walked past Alina without a word. Felt her gaze on my back the whole way.

We made it to the lobby before my hands started shaking.

Sterling flagged the driver. Didn't ask if I was all right. Didn't say anything.

I climbed into the car and pressed my forehead against the window. Watched the city lights blur.

"I'm sorry," I said finally.

"Don't."

"I shouldn't have—"

"You have nothing to apologize for."

I closed my eyes.

The next morning, I saw the article. *Page Six.* A photograph of Sterling and me entering the gala. The headline: *The Warehouse Bride Makes Her Debut.*

I read it twice. Then set my phone face-down on the table.

Sterling was already gone. Early meeting.

I made coffee. Stared at the wall.

Two days later, the publication issued a retraction. Vague language about editorial standards. The columnist was let go.

I didn't ask Sterling if he'd done it.

He didn't mention it.

---

Dinner that night, I didn't take my plate to my room.

I sat at the table. Sterling was already there, tie loosened, sleeves rolled up.

He looked up when I sat down. Didn't comment.

We ate in silence for a while.

"Thank you," I said finally. "For the gala."

He set his fork down. "You don't have to thank me."

"Yes, I do."

He studied me for a moment. Then nodded once.

I picked at my food. "You said someone gave you candy. At your mother's gala."

"Yes."

"What kind?"

"Peppermint. Wrapped in gold foil." His voice was quieter now. Almost careful. "She said it was her favorite. That it might help."

Something stirred at the back of my mind. Distant. Blurred.

"Did it?" I asked.

"Yes."

I looked at him. He was watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

"I wish I could remember her name," he said.

I set my fork down. The memory was there, just out of reach. A ballroom. A boy in a too-big suit.

But it wouldn't come clear.

"Maybe she doesn't remember either," I said softly.

Sterling was quiet for a long time. Then he picked up his fork and went back to his meal.

I did the same.

Outside, the city hummed. Inside, for the first time in a year, I felt something that wasn't fear.

I didn't have a name for it yet.

But it was there.
