My Twin Brother Planted Drugs in My Locker—Then I Broke the Record He Tried to Steal

When I uncovered my twin brother's doping frame-up, he retaliated by planting banned pills in my locker. My father knew the truth but sacrificed my eligibility to protect the family name. So I turned over the evidence and walked away from the Carter legacy. Only Noah Blake—the boy I was raised to despise—stayed by my side, nursing a hidden injury. With my scholarship and senior season on the line, his mother runs my dream program. Choosing him risks everything; losing him means losing the only person who ever chose me.

Chapter 3

The old municipal aquatic center had been closed for renovations since spring, which made the empty natatorium feel abandoned. Half the overhead lights were off. Dust sheets covered the timing equipment, and the only sound came from water dripping somewhere behind the diving well.

Noah sat on the highest row of bleachers with a blue archive box beside him.

"You said you had proof," I said as I climbed the steps.

"I said I had dates. Proof is what you decide the dates mean."

He lifted the lid and handed me a stapled packet.

The first page was his asthma diagnosis. The second was a therapeutic-use clearance signed before the National Junior final. The third listed the permitted concentration for his inhaler medication. Every page carried the tournament physician's seal.

"I already saw part of this," I said.

"Not this part."

Noah pulled out a printed access log.

Three names appeared beside the clearance file: the tournament medical office, Serena Blake, and Daniel Carter.

I read my father's name twice.

"Dad filed an eligibility objection," I said. "That does not mean Ethan filed the anonymous tip."

The next page showed a forwarded email header. Daniel had downloaded the clearance at 4:12 p.m. on race day. At 4:24, he forwarded the PDF to Ethan's private email address. At 4:41, the anonymous doping report entered the tournament system.

Seventeen minutes.

I felt the cold metal bench through my jeans.

"Someone could have gotten the information another way."

Noah leaned back. "Only if they hacked the medical server, guessed my medication, knew which event I was swimming, and filed the complaint immediately after Ethan lost."

"You want me to accuse my twin based on an email header."

"No. I want you to stop treating the version your family gave you as evidence."

I hated how reasonable he sounded.

For two years, Ethan had described Noah as a disgraced cheat who could not handle losing his reputation. Daniel called the disqualification proof that rules mattered. I had repeated both explanations whenever teammates brought up the race.

I had never once asked to see the actual ruling.

"Why did the appeal fail?" I asked.

Noah's mouth tightened. "Because the committee said I should have disclosed the inhaler again at check-in even though the clearance was already in the system. They treated a paperwork argument like a doping violation. My family appealed. By the time the hearing happened, the season was over and every recruiter had already moved on."

"And you transferred here because of Ethan?"

"I transferred because a former committee administrator told my mother the anonymous tip came from a device registered to the Carter team hotel network. That is not enough to identify a person, but it was enough to tell me where to look."

He handed me one final sheet.

At the bottom was a request form to reopen his case.

The witness line was blank.

"You want me to sign this?"

"No. You have access to the Carter side of the story. I want you to decide whether you are willing to ask questions."

I folded the form and slid it into my bag.

An hour later, I walked into our kitchen and found Ethan eating cereal at the island. Daniel stood by the espresso machine reading emails on his tablet.

I placed the copied access log between them.

Ethan stopped chewing.

Daniel barely glanced at the page. "Where did you get that?"

"Why did you forward Noah's medical clearance to Ethan seventeen minutes before someone reported him?"

The kitchen went silent.

Daniel set his coffee down. "Because Ethan was the athlete directly affected by the eligibility question. I kept him informed."

"Did you file the anonymous complaint?"

"No."

I turned to Ethan. "Did you?"

His spoon clicked against the ceramic bowl.

"This is exactly what Blake wants," Ethan said. "He comes into our program, gets close to you, and suddenly you are interrogating your own family."

"That is not an answer."

"I did not say I filed anything."

"You also did not say you didn't."

Daniel stepped between us. "Enough. Noah Blake had a medication issue. The committee ruled. We are not reopening a two-year-old scandal because he wants revenge."

"I read the clearance. His medication was allowed."

"You are seventeen," Daniel said, voice flattening. "You are not a sports-law attorney."

"Neither are you."

Ethan shoved his bowl away. "What do you want, Maya? You want them to take the title back? You want my college coaches asking whether my biggest win was fake?"

"If your win depends on someone else's false disqualification, it already is."

His face changed.

Not guilt. Fear.

Daniel caught my wrist as I turned toward the hallway. "Do not make a decision that damages both of your futures."

I pulled free. "You hid my MRI because you were afraid a shoulder injury would hurt recruiting. You knew Noah had medical clearance and still let us call him a drug cheat for two years. I am done letting 'our future' mean whatever protects the better headline."

I went upstairs, opened my laptop, and scanned the reopening form.

My cursor hovered over the witness statement box for almost a minute.

Then I typed exactly what I knew: Daniel received the clearance. He forwarded it to Ethan. Our family publicly benefited from the disqualification. I did not claim to know who filed the anonymous tip.

I attached the access log and clicked Submit.

The confirmation email arrived six minutes later.

Review request accepted. Prior championship ruling subject to renewed investigation.

A knock sounded against my bedroom door.

Ethan stood in the hallway when I opened it. He had his team backpack over one shoulder and no expression on his face.

"You filed it," he said.

"Yes."

He nodded once, almost calmly. "Then you picked him."

"I picked the truth."

"Same thing, apparently."

He turned away.

"Ethan."

He stopped at the top of the stairs but did not look back.

"Did you file the report on Noah?"

His fingers tightened around the backpack strap.

"You should worry less about what happened two years ago," he said, "and more about what this investigation is going to do to you tomorrow."

He walked downstairs.

My phone buzzed a second later with the state-prelims check-in schedule.

Locker assignments unchanged from regular season.

Mine was number thirty-two.

Ethan knew the combination.
