My Ex Engineered My Husband’s Affair in Zurich Chapter 1

The rooftop terrace smelled like jasmine and champagne. I stood under a canopy of white silk, sunlight pooling on the weathered brick beneath my feet, and looked at Carson. His eyes were steady. His hand was warm in mine. I was mid-vow when I saw him.

Barrett Knight.

He stood near the back of the crowd, charcoal suit fitted like it was drawn on, champagne flute held loose in one hand. He wasn't watching Carson. He was watching me. The way a man watches something he used to own.

My voice didn't shake. I finished the sentence I'd started. Something about honor and faithfulness and all the days ahead. Carson smiled at me, soft and certain, and I made myself smile back. But my peripheral vision had narrowed to a single point: Barrett, motionless among the guests, standing there like he'd been invited.

I hadn't seen him in two years. I thought I'd done the work. I thought I'd buried the girl who used to kneel on his marble floor and beg him to pick up the phone.

Apparently, I was wrong.

The officiant pronounced us married. Carson kissed me, gentle and unhurried, and the crowd clapped. I heard it from very far away. When I opened my eyes, Barrett raised his glass in a slow, private toast. Just to me. Then he drank.

I turned away and let Carson lead me down the aisle.

---

The reception was in the same loft, one floor down. String lights and small tables and a playlist I'd spent three weeks building. I should have been happy. I was happy. But my body had gone into some old, familiar mode—hypervigilant, skin tight, waiting for the next hit.

Carson's colleague, a guy named Ben from the firm, leaned in during the cocktail hour. He had a beer and a friendly, clueless smile.

"That's Barrett Knight," he said, nodding toward the bar. "You know him?"

I looked where he was pointing. Barrett stood near the marble countertop, talking to someone I didn't recognize. He looked relaxed. Amused.

"No," I said.

Ben laughed. "Well, Carson does. That's his boss. Founding partner. Kind of a legend, actually. Surprised he came—he doesn't usually do employee weddings."

I set my champagne glass down on the nearest table. I didn't trust my hands.

"Carson's boss," I repeated.

Ben nodded, oblivious. "Yeah. Knight Industries. Carson's been there, what, three years? Barrett's the guy who hired him."

I smiled. I said something polite. I don't remember what. Ben drifted away. I stood very still and breathed through my nose until the static in my head cleared.

Barrett Knight was Carson's employer. The man who controlled my husband's career. The man who could make one phone call and destroy everything Carson had built.

And he was here.

I didn't pick up the champagne glass again.

---

I made it through the toasts. I made it through the first dance. I smiled for photos and cut the cake and let Carson spin me under the string lights while our friends clapped. But between the ceremony and the dinner service, I slipped out. I needed air. I needed to think.

I found a service corridor behind the kitchen—narrow, dimly lit, smelling faintly of bread and dish soap. I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes.

"Makenna."

I opened my eyes.

Barrett stood three feet away, hands in his pockets, expression calm. He looked exactly the same. Same sharp jaw. Same eyes that never blinked first. Same faint smile that meant he'd already won something I didn't know we were playing for.

"Congratulations," he said.

I didn't move.

"I tried to find you," he continued, voice easy, conversational. "After we ended things. I reconsidered."

I stared at him. Reconsidered. Like I was a business deal he'd walked away from too quickly.

"I don't recall your name clearly," I said.

His smile faltered. Just for a second. Just enough.

I pushed off the wall and walked past him. I didn't look back. I didn't run. I just walked, steady and unhurried, back toward the noise and the lights and the man I'd actually married.

Behind me, Barrett said nothing.

I didn't care.

---

That night, Carson fell asleep almost immediately. He always did after big events—something about the adrenaline crash. I sat on the edge of our bed in the dark, still wearing my slip, and pulled the velvet-lined box off the nightstand.

I shook it once. The diamonds rattled—loose, discordant, expensive and meaningless. Brilliant cuts and rough stones and industrial chips, all mixed together. Five million dollars, ground into dust.

I shook it again. The sound filled the room.

Then I set it down, lay beside Carson, and pressed one hand flat against his back. I felt him breathe. In and out. Steady. Real.

I closed my eyes and made myself a promise: Barrett Knight would get nothing from me. Not a crack. Not a word. Not one single moment of the life I'd built.

He could stand in the crowd and watch.

That was all he'd ever get again.
