The Ring She Stole At My Wedding Chapter 1

"He's twelve minutes late, Evie."

My father said it the way other men announce a death in the family.

I smoothed the front of my wedding dress for the fourth time and kept my eyes on the chapel doors. "Traffic on Fifth is a nightmare on Saturdays, Dad."

"Kael Morrow has a helicopter."

"Then maybe the helicopter is late."

Dominic Castellane, the man who quietly owned half the banks Kael borrowed from, did not laugh. He stood beside me in the bridal alcove, gray suit, gray temples, gray eyes that had made senators sweat. To everyone out there in the pews, he was just Mr. Castell, a retired importer from Connecticut. Nobody knew the name we'd buried for my sake.

I'd buried it so Kael would love me for me.

Three years. Three years of him calling me his "small-town girl." Three years of me letting him.

"Call him again," Dad said.

"I've called him six times."

"Make it seven."

I lifted my phone. My thumb shook over his name. *Kael ❤.* It rang. It rang again. Then his voice, smooth and bored, the same voice that ran Morrow Holdings and half of Manhattan's skyline.

*You've reached Kael Morrow. Leave it with my assistant.*

I hung up before the beep.

"Voicemail?"

"He's probably in a meeting."

"On his wedding day."

"You know how he is." I forced a smile. It felt like plastic stretched over a cut. "He's a workaholic. That's one of the things I love about him."

Dad's jaw worked. He said nothing. That was worse.

From the chapel, the string quartet ran through Pachelbel's Canon for the third time. Someone coughed. Someone else laughed, then stopped too fast.

My maid of honor, Priya Nadkarni, slipped through the curtain. Her lipstick was perfect. Her face was not.

"Evie." She grabbed my hands. Hers were ice. "Okay. Don't freak out."

"Why would I freak out?"

"His best man just left."

The floor tilted. "Left where?"

"Out the side door. Grant. He took a call, went white, and walked out. Didn't say a word to anyone."

"Maybe Kael needs him. Maybe there's an emergency at the office—"

"Evie, Grant had his car keys in his hand before he even hung up."

Behind me, my father exhaled through his nose. Slow. Controlled. The sound of a man counting to ten and losing interest at four.

"Priya," he said. "Get me Grant's number."

"Dad, don't."

"Get it."

Priya fled.

Forty minutes.

That was how long I stood at the back of the chapel in eleven thousand dollars of Italian silk, watching four hundred guests turn around in their seats, one by one, to stare at me.

I heard them. Of course I heard them.

"Told you. Men like Kael don't marry girls like that."

"Where did he even find her? A coffee shop?"

"Bet he finally came to his senses."

"Poor thing. Look at her face."

A woman in a pink fascinator raised her phone. Not even hiding it. The little red dot glowed.

Kael's mother, Celeste, sat in the front row in emerald green. She didn't turn around. She checked her watch, sighed, and whispered something to the man beside her that made him chuckle.

I gripped my bouquet until a rose stem snapped.

Then my phone buzzed.

My heart flew up into my throat. *Kael.* It had to be.

It wasn't.

It was a text from Grant. Five words.

*He's not coming. I'm sorry.*

I read it once. Twice. The letters didn't change.

Dad took the phone out of my hand. He didn't ask. He read it, and something in his face went very still, very quiet, like a lake before the ice cracks.

"That's it," he said.

"Dad—"

"That's it." He handed the phone back. Then he turned toward the aisle, buttoning his jacket. "Lorenzo!"

His head of security peeled away from the wall. A big man, silent, who had followed my father through three continents.

"Sir."

"Find Kael Morrow. I don't care if he's in Midtown or Monaco. I want him in a room with me by tonight."

"Yes, sir."

"And call Harmon at the *Journal*. Tell him I'm ready to give him the Morrow file."

My stomach dropped.

I knew about the file. Everyone in my father's world did. The offshore accounts. The Brooklyn tower Kael's company built with cut-rate steel. The two zoning officials who'd retired early to very nice houses in Boca.

One phone call, and Kael Morrow would be a headline. Then a hearing. Then a cell.

"No." I stepped in front of my father. My veil caught on his sleeve. "No, you're not doing that."

"He humiliated you."

"He didn't—"

"He left you standing at an altar in front of four hundred people, Evelyn!" His voice cracked across the chapel like a whip. Every head snapped toward us. The quartet stopped mid-note. "He is going to learn exactly whose daughter he did that to!"

"He doesn't *know* whose daughter I am!" I shouted back. "That was the whole point!"

Silence.

My father stared at me. For a second, he looked old. Tired. Like a man who'd just watched his kid walk into traffic and couldn't reach her in time.

"Sweetheart," he said, much softer. "Look around."

I didn't want to. I did anyway.

The pink fascinator was still filming. Celeste Morrow had finally turned around, and she was smiling. A small, satisfied curve, the kind you give a waiter who brought the wrong wine.

My eyes burned. I blinked hard.

"Something happened," I said. "At work. Kael's been dealing with the Singapore merger for weeks. Maybe it collapsed. Maybe the board called an emergency session. You *know* what that's like, Dad. You've walked out of dinners. Birthdays. You missed my high school graduation for a deal in Zurich."

His mouth tightened.

"I'm not saying that to hurt you," I said. "I'm saying people who build things sometimes get pulled away. It doesn't mean they don't care."

"Evie. He couldn't send a text?"

"Maybe his phone died."

"Grant's didn't."

"Please." My voice broke on the word. I hated it. I kept going. "Please don't call Harmon. Give him one night. Let me talk to him first. If he's done something unforgivable, I'll hand you the file myself."

Lorenzo waited, phone half-raised.

My father looked at me for a long time. Then he looked at the empty altar. The white roses I'd picked. The arch Kael had said looked "a little much."

"One night," he said finally.

My knees nearly gave.

"Thank you. Thank you, Daddy—"

"Don't thank me." He turned to Lorenzo. "Hold the call to Harmon. But find him anyway."

"Understood."

Then my father faced the room, raised his voice, and said in that calm, terrible, boardroom tone, "The wedding is postponed. There's a bar downstairs. Drink as much as you like. I'm paying."

Nobody moved for a moment. Then a man near the back actually clapped.

I stood there while they filed out, laughing, whispering, glancing back at me like I was the last act of a play they'd paid good money to see.

Priya came back with a glass of champagne. I didn't take it.

"He'll have an explanation," I told her. "He will."

"Okay," she said. Just that. Okay.

My phone buzzed again.

Not a text this time. A notification. A photo, tagged by an account I didn't recognize.

I opened it.

Kael. In the tuxedo I'd helped him pick. Standing on the tarmac at Teterboro, beside his private jet.

His hand was on the lower back of a woman in a red dress.

And she was wearing my grandmother's engagement ring.
