After My Mate Replaced Me with His Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on New Year's morning, but it had been screaming lies since midnight.

I felt it the moment Hudson's distress hit—sharp, silver-burn agony rippling down my left shoulder like someone had dragged a blade through muscle. My wolf lurched inside me, whimpering. I was in the pack house kitchen when it started, and I dropped the mug I'd been holding. It shattered on the tile. The pain came again, deeper this time, spreading through my bloodstream like poison.

"Hudson?" I sent through the bond, but got only more pain in return. Fever-hot. Desperate.

I ran to the communications room and pulled up the northern border patrol logs. Nothing. No rogue activity reported. No skirmishes. I tried his phone. It went straight to voicemail.

The bond pulsed again—silver-wound, I was sure of it now. The specific burn that came from a blade laced with the one metal that could actually hurt us. I grabbed the medical kit from the supply room and paced the pack house entry hall, waiting. Every few minutes the pain spiked, and I gasped against it, my hand pressed to my own shoulder even though the wound wasn't mine.

Midnight became one a.m. One became three. I changed into field clothes in case I needed to shift and run to him. I contacted the Beta, Ronan Voss, who confirmed Hudson had left yesterday afternoon for "border inspection." I told him to send a search team. Ronan said he'd "look into it" in a tone that meant he already knew something I didn't.

By dawn I was still in the same clothes, exhausted, leaning against the doorframe. The bond hadn't quieted. If anything, it had gotten worse—rawer, more insistent, like Hudson was trying to reach me and couldn't. I told myself he was pinned down. I told myself he was hurt and couldn't move. I told myself the mate bond was doing exactly what it was supposed to do: keeping me connected to him even when distance and injury separated us.

I believed every word.

At seven a.m., one of the younger Deltas came into the common room and pulled up a livestream on the big screen—some neighboring pack's New Year's bonfire celebration in the Colorado mountains. I barely looked up. I was too tired. Too worried.

Then I heard his laugh.

My head snapped toward the screen. And there he was.

Hudson. Not bleeding. Not wounded. Not pinned down by rogues on Ironveil's northern border. He was standing in front of a massive bonfire, his arms wrapped around a woman I recognized immediately: Aspyn Calloway, a low-ranking she-wolf from our own pack. His mouth was on hers. His hand cupped the back of her neck, tilting her head up toward him. And his mark-spot—the place where my teeth had sealed our bond ten years ago under a full moon—was exposed, flushed, angled toward her lips like an offering.

The wolves around them were laughing. Aspyn's hands fisted in his shirt. Hudson pulled her closer.

The bond in my chest went cold.

Not the silver-burn I'd felt all night. Not the fever-pain. Cold. Like someone had opened a door in an empty room and left it that way.

I stood in the doorway for sixty seconds. Maybe longer. The Delta who'd pulled up the stream realized what he was watching and tried to turn it off, but I said, "Leave it," and my voice didn't sound like mine.

The livestream ended. Hudson kissed her one more time, grinning, and the camera cut away.

I turned and walked to my records room.

I kept everything. Flight logs. Meeting transcripts. Alliance correspondence. Negotiation summaries. Ten years of documentation that proved every territorial expansion, every alliance, every victory Ironveil claimed had been built on my work. I also kept Hudson's travel records, because I was the one who coordinated pack logistics. I pulled his file.

Colorado departure: December 31st, 6:00 p.m.

The same night he told me he was inspecting the northern border.

I took screenshots of the livestream from three different pack social channels. I printed the flight logs. I pulled the suppressor purchase receipts from the pack account—cheap drugstore suppressants, bought in bulk two weeks ago. Hudson never used suppressants. He didn't need to.

I laid everything on the kitchen table in a single line, each piece of paper perfectly aligned, and sat down to wait.

He came home just after noon.

I smelled her before I saw him. Sugary. Cloying. The scent hit my wolf like a slap, and underneath it—barely masked by the chemical stink of suppressants—was him. His scent and hers, layered together, soaked into his skin.

Hudson stepped through the door, saw me at the table, and froze.

I didn't move. I just looked at him.

He opened his mouth. Closed it. His gaze dropped to the table, to the neat line of evidence I'd prepared, and his jaw tightened.

"Hallie—"

"Sever the bond," I said.

My voice was calm. Flat. I sounded like I was asking him to pass the salt.

Hudson's eyes flashed. "You don't understand—"

"I understand that you lied to me through our mate bond while you were in another woman's arms," I said. "I understand that I felt your fake wound all night while you were kissing her in front of a crowd. I understand that you bought suppressants two weeks ago, which means this wasn't impulse. It was planning."

I tapped the receipts.

"So sever the bond," I said. "Or the Lycan Council will do it for you."

Hudson's Alpha tone rose reflexively, filling the kitchen with pressure. "You don't get to make demands—"

"I'm not making a demand," I said, and my tone didn't shift at all. "I'm telling you what's going to happen."

His wolf snarled inside him—I felt it through the bond, the last thing I'd ever feel through it. He stepped forward, his hands flat on the table, leaning over me.

"You want to know why?" he said, his voice low and vicious. "Because you're too dominant, Hallie. Too cold. You're more Alpha than Luna. You've spent ten years making me feel like a figurehead in my own pack."

I stared at him.

"Aspyn needs me," he said. "She looks at me like I'm actually worth something. Not like I'm—" He stopped. His jaw worked.

"Not like you're what?" I asked softly.

"Not like I'm borrowing your strength," he spat.

The bond went silent.

I picked up my pen and pulled a blank sheet of paper toward me.

"Get out," I said.

Hudson stared at me for five more seconds. Then he turned and walked out, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the frame.

I sat alone at the kitchen table and began drafting the bond-dissolution filing. My hand didn't shake once.
