At a glamorous high-society gala, Cole Barnes publicly humiliates his wife by bidding fifty thousand dollars on a day with his stunning mistress, Lilly Simpson. While the elite crowd applauds his shameless display of desire, they remain completely blind to his wife's massive secret. She possesses enough hidden wealth to buy the entire venue. As Cole openly flaunts his mistress, a quiet war of passion, immense riches, and ultimate betrayal begins within their home.

My Husband Moved His Mistress Into Our Home Chapter 1

The chandelier in the Plaza ballroom threw light like broken glass across three hundred faces. I sat at the head table in a gown I'd spent two hours choosing—midnight blue silk that cost more than most people's rent, though no one here knew I could've bought the entire hotel without checking my account balance. Cole stood on stage under a spotlight, microphone in hand, grinning like a man who'd just discovered he was invincible.

"And now," the auctioneer announced, "a day with one of Cole Barnes Technologies' most valuable assets—Miss Lilly Simpson!"

Lilly stepped into the light wearing red. Of course it was red. The dress clung to her like a second skin, and she tilted her head with practiced shyness, letting her hair fall across one shoulder. The room filled with polite applause. I watched Cole's face. He wasn't even trying to hide it.

"Fifty thousand dollars," he said into the microphone.

The applause stopped. Someone gasped. I felt three hundred pairs of eyes slide toward our table, then away, then back again. The auctioneer blinked.

"Fifty thousand going once—"

"Fifty thousand," Cole repeated, louder this time, like he wanted to make sure everyone heard. He was looking at Lilly, not at me. "For a day with the woman who actually understands what I've built."

Lilly pressed her hands to her mouth. Her eyes went wide and shiny. She mouthed *thank you* across the stage. The auctioneer brought the gavel down. Sold.

I sat very still. My thumb found my ring finger under the table and pressed hard against the band Cole had put there five years ago. The metal was warm. My hand was not.

Across the ballroom, investors leaned toward each other and whispered. I caught fragments—*his wife is right there*—*what is he thinking*—*poor thing*. A woman at the next table looked at me with something between pity and embarrassment, then looked away fast when I met her eyes.

Cole came down from the stage. Lilly followed half a step behind, her hand resting on his arm like she'd been doing it for years. He walked past our table without looking at me. I watched him stop at the bar, watched Lilly laugh at something he said, watched him lean close to whisper in her ear.

I stood up. My chair didn't make a sound against the carpet. I walked across the ballroom in my midnight blue gown and my four-inch heels, and I did not hurry. People moved out of my way without meaning to. I stopped three feet from Cole's shoulder.

"I need to speak with you," I said quietly.

He turned around. His face was flushed from champagne and victory. "Not now, Maren."

"Now."

Something in my voice made Lilly take a small step back. Cole's jaw tightened. He handed his glass to the bartender and followed me to the edge of the ballroom, near the tall windows that looked out over Central Park. The city lights blurred in the glass.

"You just spent fifty thousand dollars," I said.

He shrugged. "It's for charity."

"It's marital assets. I want my half back."

For a second he just stared at me. Then he laughed. It wasn't a kind sound. "You want—Jesus Christ, Maren. You're seriously doing this? Here?"

"Twenty-five thousand dollars," I said. "That's my legal share."

His face twisted into something ugly. He stepped closer, and I smelled the champagne on his breath. "You're embarrassing," he said, loud enough that the nearest table went quiet. "You're pathetic. This is exactly why I need a woman like Lilly in my life. Someone who understands success. Someone who doesn't *nickel-and-dime* me at a goddamn charity gala."

I looked at him. Really looked. The man I'd knelt in the rain for. The man I'd begged my father to save. The man whose company only existed because I'd poured five years of my life into making him believe he'd built it himself.

I pressed my thumb against my ring finger one more time. Then I let go.

"Okay," I said.

He blinked. "Okay?"

"Okay," I repeated. I turned and walked back across the ballroom. Three hundred people watched me leave. I didn't look back.

The apartment was dark when I got home. I didn't turn on the lights. I sat by the window in my gown and looked at the orchid on the sill—white petals still perfect, still alive after three months. Jensen had sent it on the anniversary of the day we met when we were kids. He'd sent one every year since we were sixteen. Even during my engagement. Even during my marriage. Cole never noticed. Cole never asked.

I picked up my phone. Jensen's contact stared back at me. My thumb hovered over the call button.

I set the phone down.

Not yet. But soon. Something inside me was waking up, and it felt like ice and clarity and the first breath after drowning.

A week later, Cole came home at noon. I was in the kitchen. He didn't look at me when he spoke.

"Lilly's moving in," he said. "Temporarily. Her place is being renovated."

I watched him straighten his cufflinks. That gesture he did when he was lying.

"For how long?" I asked.

"I don't know. A few weeks. Maybe a month." He finally looked up. His eyes dared me to argue. "It's not a big deal, Maren. Don't make it one."

I thought about the fifty thousand dollars. I thought about the red dress and the way she'd touched his arm. I thought about my father's fifteen engineers working in Cole's building right now, and the fact that Cole had no idea who really owned the ground he stood on.

"Okay," I said again.

Cole frowned, like he'd been expecting a fight and didn't know what to do with my silence. He left the kitchen. I heard the front door close behind him.

I stood there for a long time, staring at nothing. Then I walked to the window and looked at the orchid again. This time, I picked up my phone and opened a different contact.

Mr. Henderson answered on the first ring.

"I need you to prepare the team," I said quietly. "Not yet. But soon. I'll tell you when."

There was a pause. Then: "Understood, Miss Castillo."

I hung up. The orchid's reflection stared back at me from the dark window. I looked like a stranger. Maybe I was.
