The Son Who Chose Another Mother Just Walked Into My Interview Room

9.3 / 10.0
Seven years ago, I lost my son to another woman's arms and my billionaire lover to the wreckage that followed. Now I sit across from a job candidate, and the door opens: the boy who chose her, grown sharp-eyed, with his father's shadow behind him—the man I never stopped craving. The interview becomes a battlefield of old wounds and forbidden hunger, where one wrong word could shatter the fragile life I built. But the heat in his gaze isn't here for small talk. He's here to reclaim what was taken—and this time, he won't let me run.

The Son Who Chose Another Mother Just Walked Into My Interview Room Chapter 1

"All she cares about is money and grades—Aunt Vivian actually feels like a mom."

My fifteen-year-old said it to a judge without looking at me.

I was two months pregnant when he said it, and no one in that courtroom knew.

Not my husband Desmond, who couldn't wait to hand Caleb to the woman already sleeping in my house.

Not the judge, who asked me twice if I was sure I wanted to give up custody.

I signed.

I didn't mention the baby.

I didn't mention the partnership offer folded inside my purse, the one that would build the biggest venture fund in the country.

For nine years I'd mortgaged my own apartment to clear Desmond's debts and woken at five to pack Caleb's lunch.

He chose the woman who bought him sneakers and never asked about his grades.

So I let him.

Eighteen years later I raised my second son alone, and I funded companies just to take them apart.

This fall I ran our final interviews, the way I always do.

The seventh candidate walked in and we both stopped breathing.

I read his résumé to the last line.

Mother: blank.

His mouth shook around a word eighteen years too late.

I slid the page back across the table and asked him to send in the next candidate.

The one with my last name.

"She only cares about money and grades, Your Honor."

Caleb’s voice echoed through the heavy oak doors of Courtroom 4.

"Aunt Vivian is actually like a mom to me. She treats me like a person, not a project."

The words hit me square in the chest. I sat on the hard wooden bench in the corridor, balancing a four-compartment bento box on my knees. Heat still radiated through the plastic container. I had been up since five in the morning frying his favorite sweet and sour pork, and the food wasn't even cold yet.

Through the two-inch gap in the doorway, I watched my fifteen-year-old son lean closer to the woman sitting beside him. He did not look back at the corridor. He did not look at me.

Vivian smiled, her manicured fingers twisting the wrapper off a butterscotch candy. She placed it right into Caleb’s palm.

"Here you go, sweetie," Vivian cooed, her voice carrying into the hall. "You need your sugar."

Caleb popped the candy into his mouth. "Thanks, Viv."

I stared at Vivian's hands. Those were the exact same hands I caught rifling through my bedroom closet three months ago, searching for my expensive jewelry while my husband waited for her downstairs.

The courtroom doors swung open, forcing me to pull my knees back. Desmond stepped out, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored charcoal suit.

He stopped, glancing down at me and the lunchbox. A scoff escaped his lips.

"Stop whining, Lydia," Desmond said, his tone flat and annoyed. "The kid made his choice."

I wasn't crying. My eyes were perfectly dry. I looked up at the man I had been married to for sixteen years.

"Who is whining?" I asked, my voice steady.

"You are. Sitting out here looking like a martyr with that cheap plastic box." Desmond checked his watch. "It's pathetic."

"I woke up at dawn to make his favorite meal," I replied.

"He hates your cooking. Vivian takes him out for sushi."

I gripped the edges of the bento box. "I mortgaged my pre-marital two-bedroom apartment for you, Desmond. I paid off four hundred and eighty thousand in debts to keep your factory from going under."

He rolled his eyes. "Don't start this again. We settled the finances in mediation. You got your tiny cut."

"And Caleb?" I asked, refusing to drop his gaze. "I spent two thousand a month on elite tutors so he wouldn't fail out of high school. I stayed up with him every single night while you were out drinking."

Desmond smirked. "You nagged him. Vivian bought him those limited-edition sneakers he actually wanted. She listens to him."

"She was listening to him three months ago when I caught her digging through my closet?" I asked.

Desmond stiffened, glancing around the empty corridor. "Keep your voice down."

"She bought him shoes with the money you siphoned from our joint account," I stated.

"Doesn't matter now." Desmond turned toward the courtroom. "The judge is ready for your final statement. Let's get this over with."

I remained seated for a few more seconds. My gaze dropped to my leather purse sitting on the bench next to me. Tucked safely inside the side pocket was a folded piece of thick parchment.

Grace had handed me that venture capital partnership offer late last night. I hadn't told a single soul about it.

I also hadn't mentioned my other secret.

"Mrs. Carrington?" The bailiff poked his head out of the doors. "Judge Miller needs your verbal confirmation."

I stood up. I didn't take the lunchbox with me. I slid it to the far end of the wooden bench. The sweet and sour pork could rot there for all I cared.

Walking into the courtroom, the air felt suffocatingly still. Desmond stood near the plaintiff's table. Vivian hovered right behind him, her hand resting firmly on Caleb's shoulder.

Judge Miller peered over his reading glasses. "Mrs. Carrington, please step forward."

I walked up to the defendant's table.

"I must ask you to confirm for the record," Judge Miller said. "Are you absolutely certain you wish to relinquish full custody of your son, Caleb Carrington, to his father?"

Caleb finally looked at me. His jaw set into a defiant line. He expected me to fight, to scream, to drag this out the way a hysterical mother would. He wanted a show.

"Yes, Your Honor," I said.

Caleb blinked, his defiant expression faltering for a fraction of a second.

The judge frowned, tapping his pen against a stack of legal documents. "I will ask you one more time. Custody modification is a serious matter. You are waiving all visitation rights. Are you completely sure you are giving up your parental rights?"

"I am sure."

Desmond exhaled a sharp breath of relief. Vivian squeezed Caleb's shoulder, leaning down to whisper something in his ear. Caleb quickly recovered his smirk, turning his face away from me.

"Very well," Judge Miller said, sliding the final decree across the thick mahogany desk. "Sign the papers."

I walked up to the bench. I picked up the heavy brass pen. I didn't hesitate. I signed my name on the dotted line, severing my legal ties to the boy I had raised for fifteen years.

"We are adjourned," Judge Miller announced, striking his gavel.

I turned on my heel and walked straight down the aisle.

"Lydia, wait."

Vivian's voice echoed behind me. I stopped near the exit, turning to face her. She strutted down the aisle, a victorious grin painted across her face. Desmond and Caleb were busy packing up their things at the table.

"What do you want, Vivian?" I asked.

"I just want you to know, I'll take good care of them," she said, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. "Both of them. You don't have to worry about a thing."

"You can keep the man who cheats and the boy who doesn't respect his mother," I replied.

Vivian's smile tightened. "You're just bitter because you lost everything today."

"I didn't lose anything," I said. "I dropped dead weight."

I pushed through the heavy wooden doors, leaving her standing there. I marched down the echoing corridor, ignoring the abandoned lunchbox on the bench, and shoved through the heavy glass doors of the courthouse.

The crisp morning air hit my face.

I stopped at the top of the wide concrete steps. My right hand instinctively drifted to my abdomen, resting flat against the fabric of my dress.

Two months.

I was two months pregnant, and Desmond would never know this child existed.

My left hand reached into the open zipper of my purse. My fingertips brushed against the crisp edge of Grace's offer letter.

A sudden gust of wind swept across the plaza. It caught the exposed corner of the thick parchment, flipping it upward and creasing the paper right over the bolded salary figure.
