Chapter 2

The supervising mentor's face had gone gray as iron. He stepped forward, his voice low and hard. "Juliana Cox, you will apologize to the entire hospital and to the public right now, and submit a formal letter of self-criticism. Otherwise the hospital will deal with this severely."

I gently shook Crystal's hand off mine. My fingertips were cold. My eyes stayed level, untroubled.

"I did nothing wrong. There's nothing to apologize for."

"First, I didn't deliberately curry favor with anyone. Second, holding an umbrella for a colleague is one physician looking after another, not workplace flattery. Third, the person who needs to apologize is the one who edited that clip out of context and turned the internet loose on me. Not me."

Crystal's eyes flooded red in an instant, tears spilling on command, sliding down her cheeks.

"I just can't stand to see something unfair. I only wanted to protect integrity in our field. I never set out to target you..."

She choked on the words, her voice trembling, the picture of innocence wounded by my unyielding stance.

"But why won't you just admit it? Everyone can see it plain as day. You were sucking up to the boss, looking for a shortcut..."

The crowd was fully swept up in her now. A wave of abuse came crashing toward me from every direction.

The elderly deputy director had gone pale. Days of grueling volunteer clinics had drained him dry, and now, just as he meant to speak up in my defense, Crystal cut him off before he could begin.

"Deputy Director Gilbert, don't take her side!" Crystal turned to him, her tone earnest, pleading. "I know you look out for the younger generation. You must be fooled by the act she puts on! We can't let your soft heart excuse behavior that drags our whole profession through the mud!"

One sentence, and Saul's defense was dead in his throat.

His mouth opened, then closed. In the end all he could do was sigh, helpless.

I watched Crystal's airtight performance, and all that was left inside me was indifference.

I raised my hand, took out my phone, my voice clear and ringing, cutting clean through the clamor.

"The innocent clear themselves. Since everyone wants this so-called truth."

"Nine o'clock tomorrow morning, the hospital's main conference room. A full, public livestream. I'll give all of you an answer."

"Crystal. Do you dare to face me?"

A flicker of triumph crossed Crystal's eyes, instantly smoothed over into the look of someone open and unafraid. She nodded hard. "I do! I stand straight, so I fear no crooked shadow. I'll expose the truth and give our profession back its fairness!"

She was certain she had me cornered, certain I had no way to clear my name.

She had no idea this was bait. I was fishing. I meant to clean the rot out of this hospital.

That night the outcry spiraled past any hope of control, festering to a point no one could pull back.

My personal social media was dug up. My inbox and comments drowned under endless venom.

【Scheming witch, get out of medicine!】

【She'll do anything to keep her spot. It's disgusting.】

【With people like this in a hospital, who'd dare trust them with their life?】

Inside the hospital's staff group chat, the mockery ran just as thick.

Plenty of colleagues piled on, riding the wave, convinced of my rotten character, all of them demanding the hospital come down hard.

And Crystal struck while the iron was hot, stoking the fire through the night, casting herself once and for all as the brave whistleblower exposing corruption.

She posted a long essay before dawn, attaching a heap of so-called evidence.

A few snapshots of me not joining in idle chatter with coworkers, which she spun into "a cold loner who only flatters the bosses and looks down on her peers."

The way I'd focused on my patients during the clinic, which she twisted into "deliberately playing humble while frantically clinging to the higher-ups in private."

More damning still, two supervising mentors who had long resented me posted publicly to back her up.

【Cox's conduct during her internship really was off. Mediocre skills, yet always angling for attention in front of leadership, far too eager to please the higher-ups. She's no honest, grounded physician.】

A mentor's endorsement nailed the lid shut on the smug, fawning face they'd painted for me.
