Wife Took Everything He Thought He’d Keep Chapter 1

The bedroom felt smaller with so many people crowded inside, their hushed voices creating a symphony of grief that seemed to press against the mahogany-paneled walls.

I sat beside Thomas's bed, gazing at this father-in-law of mine, his weathered hand gripping mine with surprising strength for a man whose breath came in shallow, labored gasps.

The scent of antiseptic mingled with the faint aroma of his cologne—the same one he'd worn for as long as I'd known him.

Twenty years of marriage to his son, truth was: Thomas had become more of a father to me than Adrian had ever been a husband.

"Grace," Thomas whispered, his voice barely audible above the quiet hum of the oxygen machine. His eyes, still sharp despite the morphine, found mine with laser focus. "If there's another life... I hope you'll still be my daughter-in-law."

The words hit me like a physical blow, not because they were unexpected, but because of the weight they carried. Behind us, I could hear Adrian's quiet sobbing, the sound of a man finally confronting the reality that his father—the source of his identity and security—was slipping away.

Thomas's grip tightened on my hand, and I squeezed back, my throat closing around words I couldn't say. Not here. Not with Adrian's business associates and household staff watching every gesture, cataloging every tear for future gossip.

"Dad, please," Adrian's voice cracked as he moved closer to the bed, his face blotchy and red. "Don't talk like that. You're going to be fine."

But Thomas's gaze never left mine. In those fading blue eyes, I saw recognition—not just of his approaching death, but of something deeper. An understanding that had grown between us over two decades of watching Adrian stumble through life while I held the pieces together.

"Twenty years," Adrian suddenly said, his voice thick with emotion as he reached for me. His arms wrapped around my shoulders, pulling me against his chest in a desperate embrace that smelled of whiskey and expensive cologne. "Grace, these twenty years have been so hard on you. But from now on, for the rest of my life, there will only be you. I promise I'll protect you always."

The irony of his words settled like lead in my stomach.

Twenty years of his affairs, his drinking, his scandals that I'd cleaned up while he played the victim. Twenty years of watching him squander every opportunity his father gave him while I learned the business from the ground up.

Around us, the household staff exchanged meaningful glances.

Mrs. Chen, the housekeeper who'd witnessed every one of Adrian's drunken rages, dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. Dr. Morrison, Thomas's personal physician, stood respectfully at the foot of the bed, his expression grave but unsurprised.

"She's been the perfect wife," whispered Margaret, Thomas's longtime secretary, to one of the business associates. "Through everything—the affairs, the arrests, that horrible scandal with the underage girl at the country club. Grace held this family together when Adrian couldn't even hold himself upright."

I felt Thomas's hand squeeze mine one final time, a gesture that felt like a benediction and a promise rolled into one. His breathing grew more labored, each exhale a little longer than the last.

"She's more his child than Adrian ever was," Dr. Morrison murmured quietly to the nurse beside him. "Twenty years of watching her handle his business affairs while Adrian played with his toys and his women."

The words should have stung, but they didn't. They were simply true.

Adrian's embrace tightened around me, his tears soaking into my black dress. "I know I haven't been... I know I've made mistakes. But Dad's death changes everything. We'll start fresh, Grace. Just you and me."

I remained silent, my eyes fixed on Thomas's face as his features began to relax into the peaceful expression that comes only with the final letting go.

The monitors showed his heart rate slowing, the beeps growing farther apart like a clock winding down.

"Look at her," someone whispered behind us. "Twenty years of devotion. If that's not love, I don't know what is."

Love.

The word felt foreign on my tongue, a concept I'd buried so deep beneath strategy and survival that I'd almost forgotten what it meant.

Had I loved Adrian once?

Perhaps.

But what I felt now was something else entirely—a cold satisfaction that my long game was finally approaching its endgame.

Thomas's eyes fluttered closed for the last time, and the room fell into a reverent silence broken only by the steady tone of the heart monitor. Dr. Morrison moved forward to check his pulse, then gently closed Thomas's eyes.

"He's gone," the doctor announced softly.

Adrian's sobs intensified, his grip on me becoming almost painful.

Around us, the staff began the quiet rituals of death—turning off machines, drawing curtains, making the phone calls that would set the funeral arrangements in motion.

"She'll finally get the life she deserves," Mrs. Chen said to Margaret, both women looking at me with something approaching reverence. "After everything she's endured for this family."

I stood slowly, gently extricating myself from Adrian's embrace. His red-rimmed eyes looked up at me with something I hadn't seen in years—genuine need. For a moment, he looked like the young man I'd married, vulnerable and lost.

"Grace," he whispered, reaching for my hand. "Promise me we'll get through this together."

I looked down at him, this man who'd caused me twenty years of public humiliation while I built his father's empire into something even greater. The man who'd never once asked what I wanted, what I needed, what I dreamed of beyond being his convenient cover story.

"Of course," I said quietly, for Thomas’ sake, if Adrian really meant what he said, I’d rather give him a chance.

But even I didn’t expect Adrian’s so-called sincerity to last less than three days—not even long enough for Thomas’s funeral to fully end.

The moment people began to drift away from the gravesite, he called out to me, and his tone had already changed.
