Chapter 3

The entire internet was screaming that I was morally bankrupt, a woman who'd tried to claw her way up through flattery and rot the whole medical profession in the process.

Crystal had become an overnight sensation. Strangers crowned her "the conscience of medical students," "a fearless soul brave enough to tell the truth." Thousands of comments poured in, praising her for never losing sight of her ideals.

Late that night, as the outrage swelled past the breaking point, the hospital's official account rushed out a statement.

【Contrary to online rumors, Deputy Director Saul Gilbert and intern Juliana Cox share no relationship of social climbing. Theirs is a teacher-student bond. Deputy Director Gilbert previously served as a professor at the medical university and was Dr. Cox's undergraduate mentor. The two have shared years of mentorship. The on-site assistance reflects nothing more than a junior's respect for a senior, and is in no way professional flattery. We ask the public to approach this rationally, and to neither believe nor spread rumors.】

The clarification turned part of the tide.

But the moment Crystal saw the statement, she posted a fresh update overnight, releasing new evidence that sent the whole internet boiling over again.

This time, she dropped a secretly taken photo, shot from a deliberately damning angle.

In it, I was holding an elegant dark gift box, caught mid-motion as I handed it to Deputy Director Gilbert.

Crystal's caption was crafted to draw blood.

【So it's an old teacher-student arrangement! No wonder she got special treatment the whole way! That explains every bit of the favoritism! I saw it with my own eyes—Juliana Cox handing Deputy Director Gilbert a gift in private. The box was sealed tight. There's a good chance it was cash inside! No wonder her internship was a cheat code from day one, no wonder the deputy director dotes on her so much!】

The instant the new "evidence" surfaced, the internet detonated. The public opinion that had just begun to loosen snapped shut, locked tight.

【Oh my God, it's confirmed! Gifts to buy connections!】

【The mentor story was just a cover. Behind closed doors it's all payoffs!】

【No wonder she got coddled without lifting a finger—turns out she's been bribing people for years!】

【This is exactly the kind of person who rots the medical profession! Investigate her to the end!】

Inside the hospital, my colleagues lost it entirely. The private whispers never stopped. Everyone had decided I'd locked down my mentor with a long campaign of gifts, and that was how I'd glided through this place so smoothly.

I stared at that stolen photo, and the warmth drained out of my eyes completely. All that was left in my chest was disbelief and a cold, bitter ache.

No one knew that this box, the one the entire internet had branded "a cash bribe," held nothing of any monetary value at all.

Deputy Director Gilbert had devoted decades to clinical work, year after year of late-night shifts that left him with severe chronic joint pain and an old leg condition. On rainy days, and whenever the summer heat wore him down, his legs ached so badly he could hardly walk.

On this return home from overseas, I'd made a point of bringing back an imported therapeutic salve developed abroad, formulated specifically for years-old joint strain and chronic bone and tendon damage. It wasn't expensive, but it was a necessity that was nearly impossible to find here.

A week ago I'd run into my old teacher by chance, and I'd simply passed the medicine to him on the spot, with a few words reminding him to rest properly.

Beyond that, I'd paid out of my own pocket to treat the mentor I hadn't seen in ages to a simple meal. The whole time we'd only reminisced about his guidance and talked shop. Clean. Aboveboard. Nothing to hide.

It had never once crossed my mind that this pure gratitude, this respect for the man who'd taught me, would be twisted into damning proof of bribery and social climbing.

By now, doctors at the hospital were jumping on the bandwagon too, calling me out in the open.

I followed the thread, pulling at it, and the deeper I dug, the more of the truth I uncovered.

It seemed it was time to reel in the net.

At nine the next morning, the main conference room of First People's Hospital was packed to the walls.

The internal compliance staff, the department heads, the medical representatives—all of them present. Dozens of reporters filled the front rows. The live-stream channel opened right on schedule.

Within minutes of going live, the viewer count blew past a hundred thousand and kept climbing.

Crystal sat in the front row, the very picture of a woman standing firm for justice.

Every camera was trained on her, and the live chat comments were still nothing but sympathy and support.

【Don't be scared, girl! Stand up for what's right!】
