Chapter 2

But my statement seemed to further confirm Teresa's words. Orville actually snorted and even had a tone of disgust.

"Just leave her alone. She's just putting on a big show, blaming me for not going with her to watch a movie today. I can't believe it. She's about to be a mother, yet she's using her children as a threat. Teresa, come and pass me the gauze."

The phone was hung up again. At the same time, I saw that Teresa had just updated a new post on her Instagram. The photo showed Orville delivering a cat with rubber gloves. Teresa showed a fair arm, and she was wiping her sweat.

The words attached said, "Being able to have a top gynecologist to help deliver the baby, Snow is really lucky."

Seeing this, I knew Orville wouldn't come. When I opened the ride-hailing app, it showed that there were still 72 people in line.

It was just a ten-minute journey for me. Finally, when I increased the fare to 300 dollars, the app showed that there was a car available.

On the way to the hospital, I kept praying that my babies would be fine.

Suddenly, a harsh braking sound rang out, followed by a violent impact.

I instinctively protected my belly with my hands. The next second, the intense pain made me faint.

When I regained consciousness again, I found that I couldn't open my eyes. I could only faintly hear the noisy footsteps and urgent calls around me.

"Call Dr. Ryder! The victim is a pregnant woman," a doctor said hurriedly.

"Dr. Ryder didn't answer," someone replied.

"Call him again. The other on-duty doctors have been transferred to the emergency room. He will answer if you call him with the hospital's emergency number," the doctor said.

I felt dizzy. I wanted to reach out and touch my belly, but I couldn't muster any strength.

Soon, I was sent into the rescue room. Even with my eyes closed, I could still feel the astral lamp shining on me.

The nurse kept wiping something on my face, which stung a little, and I also felt a little itchy.

"Dr. Moore, please come and suture the wound on her face first, and then bandage it," the nurse suddenly said.

I was stunned and thought, Is my face disfigured? What about the babies? Are my babies okay?

Suddenly, there was a burst of machine noise, followed by chaos and panic.

"Oh no, her heart and breathing have suddenly stopped. Give continuous chest compression and intravenous injection of adrenaline. Call Dr. Ryder and ask where he is."

"She is bleeding massively. We need to perform surgery immediately. Otherwise, the babies..."

"Dr. Ryder! Dr. Ryder, the patient had a sudden cardiac arrest before the surgery..."

I didn't know how long it had passed, but I felt my body was getting lighter as if I was about to fly.

I stood there in confusion, watching myself lying on the operating table, surrounded by busy medical staff.

Suddenly, I saw that Orville hurriedly arrived, but he was still calm and composed. I quickly approached and tried to grab his arm.

I begged Orville, "Save our babies. You must save our babies..."

But Orville passed through me and calmly asked the medical staff.

"What's the situation now?"

A doctor answered, "Patient, female, 30 years old, with multiple injuries from a car accident, arrived with natural membrane rupture, amniotic fluid contaminated to the third level. Before anesthesia, she had a sudden loss of consciousness, and a rapid decrease in heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and blood pressure. Emergency rescue has been initiated, but..."

Orville said, "Preparing for surgery. There is still hope for the babies to be saved."

Hearing this, I nodded tearfully in agreement.

"Yes. Yes. Yes. The babies can still be saved."

My body was covered with sterile cloth, only revealing my round belly.

But Orville's hand holding the surgical knife clearly paused, and I anxiously followed his gaze and looked down.

I noticed Orville staring blankly at the butterfly-shaped stretch marks on my belly.

When the stretch marks first appeared, I didn't feel them ugly, unlike the other mothers-to-be.

I even showed off the butterfly-like marks to Orville, saying they were the babies' marks.

But at that time, Orville took a glance and then showed disgust.

Looking at Orville, I wondered, Does he recognize me now and no longer intend to save the babies?

A doctor asked, "Dr. Ryder, any problems?"
