My Revenge with The Underworld Mafia Chapter 1

Lorelei P. O. V

"Court is adjourned."

Another day, another trial, another guilty verdict. It was my job, as a lawyer, to defend even the most hardened criminals, even when I knew they were guilty. But today, the weight of the case felt heavier than usual.

I was representing Mr. Burton, accused of cheating on his wife and then murdering her. He swore his innocence, but the evidence against him was overwhelming.

As I exited the courtroom, I bumped into Prosecutor Dylan Reid, the man I loathed more than words could express. He always seemed to win, always prosecuting my clients, leaving me feeling like a failure. Not a single case had I won.

I ignored him, I walked out and drove home. As I entered the house, I saw my husband, Matthew, and my young stepsister, Kourtney. They were laughing, Kourtney nestled in Matthew’s lap, watching TV. I knew they were close, but jealousy gnawed at me.

Matthew barely acknowledged me anymore, no longer greeting me with a kiss when I came home from work.

"Hi there!" I greeted them.

"Sister, you’re back!" Kourtney chirped, never moving from Matthew’s lap.

"Hey, Lorelei," Matthew waved, treating me like a casual acquaintance. He remained wrapped around Kourtney’s waist, oblivious to my growing frustration.

"Matthew, can we talk?" I said.

"About what?" he asked, confused.

"Just follow me upstairs."

Once we were in our bedroom, I confronted him about the boundaries he needed to set with my sister. Their closeness was unsettling, inappropriate.

"Lorelei?? Are you out of your mind?? She’s my sister-in-law, I treat her like my own sister. Don’t tell me you’re jealous! C’mon, you have nothing to be jealous about. I love you." He defended, but I felt something was off.

"Matthew, I’m not jealous! I just want you to act properly, don’t get so close to my sister. She’s a woman, you’re a man, it’s not a good look."

He shook his head, chuckling. "Lorelei, you’re overthinking! Get your head straight, you’re getting paranoid!"

"I'm not! I'm just telling you to act right. You seem to forget that I'm your wife, and you should respect my feelings." I clarified, because I didn't want him to think I was crazy.

"Lorelei, I don't understand! You're the one who never has time for our relationship because you're always working. We've been married for years, but nothing's happening. You still haven't given me a child!" Mathew said bluntly.

His words pierced me, and tears welled up in my eyes. He stormed out, leaving me confused. Maybe he was right. Maybe I was the one at fault, the reason we were so miserable, and the reason he was turning his attention to my sister.

Months passed, things seemed to return to normal. Matthew’s sweetness towards me came back, he showered me with gifts, even without an occasion. But his actions felt strange, off-kilter.

One day, I decided to take a pregnancy test. For years, I’d been trying to conceive, but each attempt ended in a miscarriage. This time, I hoped for a different outcome, a way to bring joy to my husband who longed for a child.

Tears of happiness streamed down my face as I saw the positive result. I couldn’t wait to tell Mathew so I planned to surprise him on our anniversary, coming up this Wednesday.

On the night of our anniversary, I waited for Matthew on the rooftop, where I’d arranged a romantic dinner. Minutes turned to hours, and he still hadn’t arrived. Panic gripped me, had he forgotten our special night?

Dejected, I turned to leave, but then a video arrived on my phone. I didn’t know who sent it, but as I watched, a wave of icy terror washed over me.

The video showed my husband and my sister having sex.

My legs gave way, the heavy rain mirroring the crushing weight of my emotions. Until, I found myself walking down a dark, rain-soaked street as my heart was shattered into pieces.

I stopped, startled by the sight of figures in the distance. They held knives, and fear gripped me.

"Looks like we have our new victim!" The men's laughter echoed, their eyes gleaming with a thirst for violence.

I tried to escape, but they caught me. They robbed me, stabbed me in the stomach, and my world crumbled. My child, my hopes for a future, slipping away.

I thought it was the end, but then a figure emerged from the shadows. I couldn’t see his face, but I felt a sense of salvation.

The air crackled with the sound of gunshots, a rapid succession of pops that sent me reeling. Blood splattered across my face, a gruesome testament to the violence unfolding before me.

I watched those men fall, lifeless, their threats silenced forever. But I didn't understand why I felt relieved but guilty at the same time. These men were criminals, but taking their lives was still a crime. I should have called the police, let them face justice in a court of law.

The man moved towards me, but the darkness obscured his features. Only his glowing red eyes were visible like a demon's.

But was he really here to help? Or was he another monster in disguise?

"Please, help me," I whimpered.

He stood before me, his face finally revealed in the dim light.

"You're safe now," he said, his voice cold.

My heart pounded against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of disbelief.

It was him, Prosecutor Dylan Reid.
