My Husband Chose His Sister Over Our Unborn Baby

9.3 / 10.0
One quiet evening, Raegan Morgan's life fractures when her husband, Colson, fatally strikes a young student with his car. She learns of the tragedy through a phone alert, not from him. When he finally calls at 12:47 a.m., there is no apology, no comfort—only cold silence. Pregnant and torn between loyalty and betrayal, Raegan must dig into the shadows of that night. Is Colson's devotion to his sister stronger than his bond to their unborn child? The answer changes everything.

My Husband Chose His Sister Over Our Unborn Baby Chapter 1

The night Raegan Morgan wrapped her car around a sidewalk and killed a man, I was home alone reheating soup.

I didn't find out until almost midnight. Not from Colson. From the news alert on my phone.

His name was Daniel Adams. Twenty-three years old. Night class at Bronx Community College. He was walking home.

Colson called me at 12:47 a.m. — not to ask if I was okay, not to say he was sorry, not even to say hello. Just: "Raegan's at Lenox Hill. She's not well. I need you to handle the family."

"Handle the family," I repeated.

"The victim's next of kin. A mother. Her name is Adams." A pause. In the background I could hear hospital sounds — soft beeping, low voices. "The legal team will send you the settlement parameters in the morning. Keep her calm. Keep it out of the press."

"Colson—"

"Serena." His voice had that edge. The one that meant the conversation was already over. "I need to be here for Raegan right now."

He hung up.

I stood in the kitchen with my soup going cold and thought: he didn't ask me to send flowers. He didn't ask me to pass along his condolences. He didn't say anything about the man who died on a sidewalk tonight because his sister drove drunk.

He said: keep it out of the press.

I went to bed. I didn't sleep.

For three days I was the only face Morgan accountability had. I took Mrs. Adams's calls — all of them, even the ones at 4 a.m., even the ones where she couldn't finish a sentence. I sat across from the Morgan legal team in a glass conference room and watched them slide a settlement figure across the table like it was a stock price. I was the one who had to carry that number back to a woman who had buried her only son.

Raegan sent a card. Lawyer-drafted. No one else called.

On the third day, I found out I was pregnant.

I took the test alone in the penthouse bathroom, sitting on the cold tile floor after, staring at two pink lines until they blurred. Eight weeks. I pressed my hand flat against my stomach and just breathed.

That afternoon I went shopping. I bought the smallest pair of shoes I'd ever held in my hands. A white onesie with *Daddy's First* stitched across the chest in yellow thread. I wrote a card — *Surprise, Mr. Morgan. We're going to be a family of three. — S.* — and tucked everything into a bag and hid it behind my coats in the walk-in closet.

I wanted to tell him somewhere good. Somewhere quiet. I wanted to see his face do something it hadn't done in a long time.

I never got the chance.

Mrs. Adams came on a Tuesday.

I was on the rooftop terrace when I heard the door. I turned around and she was already there — a small woman in a gray coat, her hair uncombed, her eyes the eyes of someone who hadn't slept in days. She was holding a kitchen knife in one hand and a laminated ID card in the other.

Her son's face smiled up at me from the card. Community college photo. He looked young.

"You keep sending money," she said. Her voice cracked on every syllable. "Like money is — like I can — " She stopped. Started again. "He was walking home. He was just walking home."

"Mrs. Adams." I kept my voice even. I was very aware of the railing at my back. "I know. I know he was."

"You don't know anything." She took a step forward. The knife wasn't raised — she was barely holding it, really, like she'd forgotten it was there. "Where is she? Where is the woman who did this? Why does she get to be in a hospital bed while my son is in the ground?"

I had no answer for that. There wasn't one.

I backed up until the railing pressed into my spine and I couldn't go any further. My phone was already in my hand. I called Colson.

He picked up on the second ring. I could hear Raegan's voice somewhere behind him, soft and theatrical.

"There's a woman on the roof," I said quietly. "She has a knife. I need—"

"Is it Adams?" Clipped. Impatient.

"Yes. Colson, I need security up here, I need—"

"Jump."

I stopped breathing.

"Get on the ledge and jump," he said. "Make it look real. It'll shock her into stopping. We have an airbag deployed on the street below, you'll be fine. Just — make it convincing."

The wind moved across the rooftop. Mrs. Adams was crying now, holding her son's ID against her chest.

"Colson," I said. My voice came out very small. "Are you sure the airbag is there?"

"Yes." Flat. Certain. "I need this handled, Serena. Now."

I looked down at the street twenty-two floors below.

There was no airbag.

I could see the pavement clearly. Just pavement.

I climbed over the railing anyway. Not because I believed him. But because I understood, finally and completely, that there was nothing left to believe in — and the ground below was no more dangerous than the man on the other end of the line.

I let go.

The last thing I heard before the air took me was Mrs. Adams screaming my name.
