After His Mistress Framed Me, I Took Everything Chapter 1

I rang the doorbell at three in the afternoon.

The flight from Seattle had been long. I spent most of it rehearsing what I would say. I imagined Hayden's face when I told him about the deal—the $2 billion distribution contract with Gideon Davis's conglomerate. I had spent six months negotiating it. Six months of late-night calls, revised proposals, and endless patience with corporate lawyers who wanted every comma justified. It was the biggest deal of Hayden's career. Our career. I wanted to see him smile the way he used to, back when we were building something together.

I had champagne in my bag. A handwritten card. I even wore the dress he once said made me look like I belonged in a boardroom and a ballroom at the same time.

The door opened.

A woman stood there. She was blonde, pretty, wearing an apron dusted with flour. She looked at me with mild curiosity, the way you look at a delivery person.

Behind her, children.

Four of them. Small voices, bright faces, spilling out around her legs like water. One of them—a boy, maybe six—looked up at her and said, "Mommy, who is it?"

She smiled down at him. "I don't know yet, sweetheart."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

Then Hayden appeared behind her. His face went white.

"Evelyn," he said.

The blonde woman turned to him, eyebrows raised. "Do you know her?"

Hayden stepped forward fast. He took my arm—not gently—and pulled me inside. The door shut behind me. The children scattered. The woman stayed where she was, one hand resting on the curve of her belly. She was pregnant.

"Wait in the kitchen, Lacey," Hayden said.

Lacey. His secretary.

She looked at me once more, then walked away.

Hayden dragged me down the hall into a side room. It was a study. Dark wood, leather chairs, the smell of old books. He let go of my arm and ran both hands through his hair.

"What are you doing here?" His voice was low. Tight.

I stared at him. "It's our anniversary."

He blinked. "You can't be here."

"Those children—"

"Evelyn, listen to me." He stepped closer. His hands hovered near my shoulders but didn't touch. "I have business partners arriving in two days. Important people. This deal is worth everything. If they see—if they think—" He stopped. Swallowed. "You can't ruin this."

"Ruin what?" My voice sounded strange. Flat.

"I'll explain everything later. I will. But right now, you have to play along."

"Play along."

"Yes." He nodded fast. "Just for a few days. Until the partners leave. Then we'll talk. I promise."

I looked at his face. The face I woke up next to for ten years. The face I trusted more than my own reflection.

"What am I supposed to do?" I asked.

He exhaled. Relief flickered across his expression. "I'll tell them you're the new nanny. From an agency back in the States. You're here to help with the children while we finalize the deal. That's all."

The words didn't make sense at first. Then they did.

"The nanny," I repeated.

"Just for a few days."

I should have left. I should have walked out the door, gotten back in the taxi, and never looked back.

But I didn't.

I don't know why. Shock, maybe. Or some stupid, desperate part of me that still believed there was an explanation. That this was a nightmare I would wake up from.

So I nodded.

Hayden smiled. It was thin and grateful and wrong. "Thank you," he said. "I'll make this right. I promise."

He opened the door and called for Lacey.

She came back, wiping her hands on a towel. Hayden put his arm around her waist. The gesture was automatic. Familiar.

"This is Evelyn Shaw," he said. "She's the new nanny. From the agency in Seattle."

Lacey's eyes moved over me. Slow. Assessing. Then she smiled.

"Oh, wonderful," she said. "The children have been such a handful. You're a lifesaver."

I said nothing.

That evening, Lacey noticed the necklace.

I was standing in the kitchen, holding a glass of water I didn't remember pouring. She walked past me, stopped, and turned back.

"That's pretty," she said, pointing at my throat.

I touched the pendant. The tenth-anniversary diamond Hayden had given me. I wore it every day.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

She stepped closer. Her smile didn't change. "Actually," she said, "I think that's mine."

Before I could react, she reached out and unclasped it. Her fingers were quick. Efficient. She lifted it from my neck and fastened it around her own.

"Hayden had this made for me ages ago," she said. "You must have picked it up by mistake."

I looked past her. Hayden was standing in the doorway. He met my eyes for half a second. Then he looked away.

Lacey touched the pendant and smiled. "There," she said. "Much better."

She walked out.

I stood there with my hand on my bare throat.

That night, I lay awake in the servants' room. It was narrow. Plain. The kind of room you give someone who doesn't matter.

Through the walls, I could hear them. Lacey's laugh. Hayden's low voice. The sound of a life I didn't know existed.

I opened my laptop. The contract file was still there. The $2 billion deal I had spent six months building. Every clause, every projection, every risk analysis—mine.

I stared at the screen.

Ten years. I gave him ten years.

And he made me the nanny.

I closed the laptop. My hands were steady.

Something inside me had stopped hurting. It was colder now. Sharper.

I didn't cry.
