Chapter 1

The September morning was so bright it hurt. I held Iris's hand as we walked up the stone steps of Riverside Preparatory Academy, the kind of school that looked like it belonged in a movie about perfect families. The kind of school I'd worked myself half to death to afford.

Iris squeezed my fingers. "Mommy, is this my new school?"

"Yes, baby." I smiled down at her. "You're going to love it here."

I'd rehearsed this moment in my head for months. Years, really. Every late night closing a deal, every skipped vacation, every bonus check funneled straight into the brownstone fund — it all led here. To this morning. To my daughter's future.

The admissions office smelled like fresh paint and expensive coffee. A woman in a navy blazer looked up from her desk and smiled. "Good morning. How can I help you?"

"Daphne Anderson." I set my folder on the counter, the one with all our documents organized by color-coded tabs. "I'm here to complete the enrollment for my daughter, Iris Lawson. We purchased the brownstone at 247 West 81st in April, so the guaranteed slot should be—"

"Oh." The woman's smile flickered. "Let me just pull that up."

She typed something into her computer. Her eyes narrowed slightly. She typed again.

"Is there a problem?" I asked.

She looked up at me with the careful expression people use when they're about to ruin your day. "Mrs. Anderson, the enrollment slot associated with that address has already been claimed."

The words didn't make sense. I heard them, but they landed wrong, like a sentence in a language I almost understood. "That's not possible. We closed on the property in April. The slot was part of the sale."

"Yes, I see that here." She turned the monitor slightly so I could see. "But there was a transfer authorization filed in July. The slot is now registered to a student named Nikolas Lawson."

The floor tilted. "Nikolas Lawson?"

"Yes. The authorization was signed by—" She scrolled down. "Joel Lawson. Is that your husband?"

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. The bright morning suddenly felt like it was pressing in on me from all sides.

"Mommy?" Iris tugged my hand. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing, baby." My voice came out flat. Automatic. "We just need to fix something."

I took the printed authorization form the woman offered. Joel's signature sat at the bottom, loose and confident, the same signature that was on our mortgage, our joint account, our marriage certificate.

"There must be a mistake," I said.

But I was already starting to understand that there wasn't.

---

That evening, I waited until Iris was in bed. Joel came home late, like he always did on Tuesdays. He dropped his jacket on the chair and loosened his tie as he walked into the kitchen.

"Hey." He opened the fridge without looking at me. "How was your day?"

I set the authorization form on the counter between us.

He glanced at it. His hand stilled on the fridge door. Then he closed it slowly and turned to face me, and I watched his tie — already loose — shift slightly as he swallowed.

"Daphne—"

"Who is Nikolas Lawson?"

"It's not what you think."

"Then tell me what it is."

He ran a hand through his hair. "It's a favor for an old college friend. Selene. She's going through a rough time. She's a single mom, and she had nowhere else to turn."

"So you gave away our daughter's school slot."

"It's temporary. I'll fix it."

"You signed away something I worked seven years to afford, and you didn't even tell me."

He stepped closer, his voice softening into the tone he used when he wanted to smooth things over. "I know. I should have told you. But Selene was desperate, and I just — I wanted to help. You understand that, right?"

I looked at him. Really looked. At the tie he always loosened when he lied. At the way his eyes slid just past mine instead of meeting them. At the man I thought I knew.

"I want to meet her," I said.

He blinked. "What?"

"Selene. If she's such a good friend that you'd give her our daughter's future, I want to meet her."

For a moment, something flickered across his face. Fear, maybe. Or guilt. Then it was gone, replaced by that easy, charming smile.

"Sure," he said. "I'll set it up."

---

Two days later, we met Selene at a café in Brooklyn. She was smaller than I expected, with soft brown hair and a careful, practiced way of moving. She wore a simple dress that looked expensive but wasn't, and her son sat beside her in sneakers that were just worn enough to seem sympathetic.

"Daphne." Selene's voice was barely above a whisper. "I can't tell you how grateful I am. This means everything to Nikolas. To both of us."

She reached across the table and touched my hand. Her fingers were cold.

"Joel told me what an incredible person you are," she continued, her eyes glistening slightly. "I didn't want to impose, but I just — I didn't know where else to turn."

I watched her. Watched the way her voice trembled at exactly the right moments. The way she glanced at Joel for approval. The way Nikolas sat quietly, like he'd been coached.

Something was wrong. I couldn't name it yet, but it sat in my chest like a stone.

"It's fine," I heard myself say.

Selene smiled, and it didn't reach her eyes.

---

That night, after Iris was asleep and Joel was in the shower, I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop. I opened our joint bank account, the one Joel always said he'd handle because I was "too busy."

I started scrolling.

At first, I didn't see anything unusual. Mortgage payments. Utilities. Groceries. Then I saw a transfer I didn't recognize. Five thousand dollars to an account I'd never heard of. I scrolled further. Another transfer. Then another.

My hands started shaking.

I grabbed my phone and called Fallon.

She answered on the first ring. "What's wrong?"

"I need help," I said.

There was a pause. Then Fallon's voice came back, steady and sure. "I know a forensic accountant. Her name is Elena Vance. She's expensive, she's mean, and she's exactly what you need."

I closed my eyes. "Okay."

"Daphne," Fallon said quietly. "Whatever you're about to find, I'm here."

I looked at the screen. At the numbers that didn't add up. At the life I thought I knew cracking open like an egg.

"I know," I whispered.
