Chapter 2

Elena Vance didn't look like someone who destroyed lives for a living. She looked like someone's aunt. Sensible haircut. Reading glasses on a chain. A cardigan that had seen better days.

But when she slid the bound document across the table at the midtown café, her eyes were flat and professional.

"I'll walk you through it once," she said. "After that, you're on your own."

I opened the folder.

The first page was a summary. Numbers in neat columns. Dates. Account numbers. Transfer amounts.

$427,000.

I stared at the number. It sat there on the page like something alive. Like something that could reach up and strangle me.

"That's over five years," Elena said. She didn't sound sympathetic. She sounded factual. "Monthly wire transfers averaging six thousand dollars, labeled as consulting fees. They go to an LLC registered under Selene Morales's name. The LLC exists only on paper. No services rendered. No contracts. Just money moving from your joint account to hers."

She flipped the page.

"Lease payments for a two-bedroom condo in Brooklyn Heights. Twelve thousand a month. Your husband's name is on the lease as guarantor, but the payments come from the joint account."

Another page.

"Private school tuition for Nikolas Lawson. Thirty-five thousand a year. Paid in full every August."

Another.

"Shopping receipts. Neiman Marcus. Bergdorf. Whole Foods deliveries to the Brooklyn address. Venmo transfers for what looks like allowance money. It's all here."

I couldn't speak. My throat had closed.

Elena took off her glasses and looked at me. Really looked. "Mrs. Anderson, I've been doing this for twenty years. I've seen men hide second families, gambling debts, mistresses, offshore accounts. This is textbook. He's been funding her entire life with your money."

"Every bonus," I whispered.

"Yes."

"Every time he said we couldn't afford a vacation."

"Yes."

"Every time I worked late to close another deal so we could save more."

Elena nodded. "He was spending it before you even earned it."

I looked down at the folder. At the years of my life reduced to line items. At the proof that I had been building someone else's dream while mine rotted from the inside.

"What do I do with this?" I asked.

Elena stood and picked up her purse. "That's not my job. My job was finding it. What you do next is up to you."

She walked away, and I sat there alone with the folder, in a café full of people who had no idea the woman at table seven had just watched her marriage get autopsied.

I closed the folder. Paid the check. Walked outside into the September afternoon.

I didn't cry.

I went home.

---

That night, after Iris was asleep, I sat on the bathroom floor with my laptop balanced on my knees and the faucet running. The sound covered the clicking of the keys. It covered the silence that felt too loud.

I created a new folder on my desktop. Password-protected. I named it "Riverside Enrollment" because Joel would never look twice at something that boring.

Then I started uploading.

Every page Elena had given me. Every bank statement I'd pulled from the filing cabinet in Joel's office while he was in the shower. Every receipt I'd found tucked in his jacket pockets. Every screenshot of wire transfers I'd taken on my phone in the dark while he slept beside me.

I labeled them by date. By amount. By recipient.

I cross-referenced them with our tax returns, with the mortgage statements, with the credit card bills Joel always said he'd handle because I was "too busy."

The numbers told a story. A clear, unforgiving story.

For five years, while I worked myself into exhaustion, Joel had been building a second life. A better life. A life where Selene didn't have to work, where Nikolas went to private school, where nobody had to sacrifice anything because I was doing all the sacrificing for them.

I added timestamps to everything. I made notes in the margins. I built a timeline that could survive a courtroom.

My phone buzzed. A text from Joel.

*Coming to bed?*

I looked at the screen. At the man who still thought I didn't know. Who still kissed me goodnight. Who still asked how my day was.

I typed back: *In a minute.*

Then I went back to the folder.

I worked until two in the morning. Until my eyes burned and my back ached and the faucet had been running so long the bathroom mirror fogged over.

When I finally closed the laptop, I sat there in the steam and the silence, and I felt something I hadn't felt in years.

Clarity.

I wasn't the woman who got blindsided anymore. I was the woman who knew.

And knowing changed everything.

---

The next morning, I made Joel breakfast. Scrambled eggs. Toast. Coffee the way he liked it.

He came into the kitchen yawning, still in his pajama pants, and kissed the top of my head. "You're up early."

"Couldn't sleep," I said.

He sat down and picked up his fork. "Everything okay?"

I smiled at him. The same smile I'd given him a thousand times. "Everything's fine."

He ate. I sipped my coffee and watched him, and I thought about the folder on my laptop. About the evidence sitting there, waiting.

About the fact that he had no idea what was coming.

He finished his eggs and stood, grabbing his jacket from the chair. "I've got a meeting downtown. I'll be home late."

"Okay," I said.

He kissed me on the cheek. His lips were warm. Familiar.

I watched him leave.

Then I opened my laptop and got back to work.
