Chapter 5

The rain finally stopped the day I decided to move.

Three days of hiding had hardened into purpose. The silence no longer felt like refuge—it felt like strategy.

I spent the morning at the small table by the window, spreading the papers Luca had given me across the wood. Bank ledgers, account numbers, transaction trails that snaked through shell corporations and art foundations Dante thought I never understood.

But I had watched.

For years, I’d sat at the edge of his empire, nodding through his explanations, pretending I didn’t follow.

It had been my best disguise.

Now, it was my weapon.

Half of his legitimate front companies ran under my name, filed through charity networks he’d built to clean his money. The irony was almost poetic—he’d hidden his empire in the one place he believed I was harmless.

I reached for the burner phone and dialed a number I hadn’t used in years.

A calm female voice answered. “Belladonna Finance.”

“Marianne,” I said softly. “It’s me.”

There was a long pause. Then a sharp inhale. “Isabella? I thought—”

“I know. Listen carefully. I need every account under Isabella Russo Moretti moved. Not frozen—moved. I want them liquid within twenty-four hours.”

“That’s... nearly fifty million dollars, ma’am.”

“Then you’d better move quickly.”

She hesitated. “And Mr. Moretti?”

“If he calls, tell him the accounts are being audited for fraud.”

The woman didn’t argue. She never did. Marianne had worked for my family long before Dante took over. Loyalty in our world wasn’t always to blood—it was to who remembered your name.

When I hung up, I felt the first real breath I’d taken in days.

Power tasted different when it wasn’t borrowed.

---

By noon, Luca arrived again—no warning, no sound except the soft click of the door. He moved like he used to when we were young—fluid, sure, dangerous in his calm.

“You’re making moves,” he said by way of greeting. “The city’s already humming.”

“Let it hum,” I replied, stacking the papers neatly. “He took everything that mattered to me. I’m just returning the favor.”

He crossed the room and leaned against the wall. “You know what happens when you steal from Dante Moretti?”

I looked up. “He learns what happens when someone smarter does.”

He smiled faintly. “There she is.”

I ignored the warmth in his eyes. Luca had always seen me too clearly, even when I’d tried to hide behind marriage and diamonds. That was dangerous. I couldn’t afford to be seen, not yet.

“What’s your plan?” he asked.

“First, I vanish the money,” I said. “Then I cut his contacts one by one. The suppliers, the lawyers, the middlemen—all of them were introduced through me. He won’t see it coming.”

“And after?”

“I take his name off everything he built.”

“Revenge, then.”

“No,” I said quietly. “Reclamation.”

He studied me for a long moment. “You’ve changed.”

“I learned from the best,” I said. “From him.”

---

That night, I watched the news again. The world still adored Dante Moretti. The press called him a visionary.

The word made my skin crawl.

But even visionaries bleed when the foundation cracks.

A report flashed across the screen—one of his warehouses raided, shipments seized by federal agents. No arrests yet. No charges. Just chaos.

A small smile ghosted across my lips.

He’d finally realized something was slipping.

My phone buzzed then, an unknown number. I didn’t need to check to know who it was. I let it ring twice before answering.

“Where are you?” Dante’s voice was controlled, but I heard the strain beneath it. “You walk out of my house without a word, and suddenly half my accounts are frozen. Care to explain that, bella mia?”

“I don’t owe you explanations anymore,” I said.

“Don’t play games with me,” he warned. “You think you can run? I’ll find you.”

I smiled into the phone. “If you could, you’d already have.”

He inhaled sharply. “You always were clever. But you forget who made you.”

“I remember exactly who you made me,” I said softly. “A woman who knows every secret you’ve ever buried.”

“Is that a threat?”

“It’s a reminder.”

The silence stretched between us, thick and dangerous.

Finally, he laughed—a low, dark sound. “You think you can hurt me? You’re a ghost, Isabella. I buried you the day you walked out.”

“Then maybe it’s time the dead started talking.”

I hung up.

---

The next morning, the papers reported that the Moretti–Russo alliance was “under review” after financial irregularities surfaced in the family’s offshore accounts.

The story wasn’t mine, but it was my spark.

By evening, half the city knew something had gone wrong. In our world, perception was blood. When people smelled weakness, they didn’t wait to strike. They devoured.

Dante had always believed fear held his empire together. I’d learned a different truth: fear is fragile when it starts to look foolish.

---

Later, Luca found me on the balcony, the city glittering below like a thousand false promises.

“You’re dismantling him,” he said. “Piece by piece.”

“He deserves worse.”

“Maybe.” He stepped closer. “But don’t become him.”

I turned to face him. “You think I haven’t already?”

His gaze softened. “No. You still paint. He never could.”

For a moment, the quiet between us felt human again—like the years before Dante, when the world was still simple, when survival wasn’t the only art I knew.

But sentiment was a luxury I couldn’t afford.

“I’m leaving tomorrow,” I said. “There’s an estate in Tuscany. My mother’s name is still on the deeds. I can work from there.”

“Run your new empire from old soil?” he asked.

“I’m not running an empire,” I said. “Just cleaning up one.”

He hesitated. “And what about Bianca?”

My jaw tightened. “Her time will come.”

---

I spent that night in motion—packing, encrypting, erasing. Every trace of my old life was reduced to numbers and ash. I deleted my accounts, wiped my digital footprint, and left a single message on an untraceable network only Dante’s men used.

To the King who traded loyalty for lust—checkmate.

Then I burned the phone.

By dawn, I was gone.

The drive through the countryside was silent, the city shrinking behind me like a fever dream. Fields replaced skyscrapers, and for the first time in decades, I felt air that didn’t smell like smoke or sin.

---

The villa sat on a hill outside Florence—forgotten, overgrown, untouched since my mother died. I stepped through the door, brushing dust from the walls, breathing in the ghosts of a life before him.

It was strange—how easy it felt to belong here again.

In my bag were the last remnants of my marriage: the keys to the estate, the documents, the ring I’d worn for twenty-five years.

I took them out, laid them on the desk beside a single sheet of paper—

Petition for Dissolution of Marriage —unsigned, but stamped by my lawyer’s seal.

I sealed both the ring and the document in an envelope addressed to Don Dante Moretti, and wrote one sentence across the front:

“This is the only signature you’ll ever get from me again.”

Then I left the envelope with the local courier. No return address. No message.

When he found it, he’d understand exactly what it meant:

The marriage was over. The name was gone. The empire would follow.

---

That night, I sat by the open window, listening to the wind whisper through the olive trees. For the first time, the silence didn’t feel like a cage. It felt like freedom.

He had his mistress, his empire, his lies.

I had my breath—and fifty million reasons to never look back.

I smiled to myself.

Dante always said silence was power.

He never realized silence was also the perfect revenge.
