Chapter 4

The cemetery was quiet when I arrived. Early morning, mist still hanging low between the headstones. I'd taken a car service because I couldn't drive yet, couldn't work the pedals with legs that bent wrong and ached in the cold.

I came because it was my grandfather's birthday. I always came on his birthday.

The driver helped me out, steadied me while I got the crutches under my arms. "You want me to wait?"

"Please."

I made my way across the grass slowly. The ground was soft from yesterday's rain. The crutches sank a little with each step.

I saw the marker before I reached the plot.

Small. Marble. New.

*Whiskers. Beloved companion. Rest in peace.*

I stopped. Read it again. Looked at my grandfather's headstone — the one I'd chosen, the one I'd paid for, the one that said *Thomas Wheeler, 1941-2019, He gave more than he took* — and then back at the cat's grave, right beside it, in the plot that was supposed to be my grandmother's.

The plot I'd maintained. The plot I'd paid for every year since he died.

I stood there for a long time. I don't know how long. Long enough for the mist to burn off. Long enough for the driver to get out of the car and call across the grass, asking if I was all right.

I didn't answer him.

Something in me didn't break. It had already broken too many times. This was different. This was the moment I stopped trying to hold the pieces together.

I turned around. I didn't say goodbye to my grandfather. I didn't cry. I just left.

When I got back to the estate, I went straight upstairs. Cole wasn't home. He was never home anymore unless Valentina needed something.

I pulled my suitcase from the closet. One bag. I packed carefully: clothes, documents, my laptop, the few things that were mine and only mine. I moved slowly, methodically, the way I used to set up experiments in the lab. Each item had a place. Each decision was clear.

I went to the study. The urns were on the shelf where I'd kept them since the hospital released my grandmother's ashes three weeks ago. My grandfather's urn beside hers. I wrapped them both in a sweater and placed them in the bag.

Then I opened the drawer where I'd shoved the divorce papers the week my legs were broken. I hadn't been ready then. I'd told myself there was still something worth saving, some version of Cole that would wake up and see what he'd done.

I pulled the papers out. I didn't read them. I signed on every line that needed my name, dated them, and left them on Cole's desk.

I took one last look around the study. The books I'd never read. The furniture I'd never chosen. The life I'd never really lived.

I called the car service again. When the driver pulled up, I didn't look back at the house. I gave him an address in the city — a storage facility where I'd kept a few things from before the marriage, things Cole had never known about. I retrieved my old car keys, my emergency cash, my grandfather's letters.

Then I started driving.

West. I didn't have a plan beyond that. Just west, away from New York, away from everything that had my name attached to his.

My legs throbbed after the first hour. I stopped at a rest area, took the pills the doctor had left me, and waited for the pain to dull. Then I kept going.

I drove through Pennsylvania. Ohio. Indiana. I stopped when I had to, slept in motels that didn't ask questions, paid in cash. I ate when I remembered to eat. Mostly I just drove.

By the time I reached Montana, I'd been on the road for four days. The landscape had opened up, all sky and distance. I liked that. I liked how small it made me feel, how anonymous.

The storm came in fast. One minute the sky was clear, the next it was dark and sideways rain. I should have pulled over. I knew that. But I was tired of stopping, tired of waiting, tired of being careful.

The road curved. I took it too fast. The car hydroplaned, spun, and I felt the wheels leave the pavement.

There was a moment — just one, between the spin and the impact — where I thought, *This is it.*

Then the car hit something. Metal screamed. Glass shattered. The world flipped.

When it stopped, I was upside down. The seatbelt cut into my chest. Blood ran into my eye — the one that still worked. I couldn't feel my legs, but I didn't know if that was the crash or just how they'd been since Cole's men finished with them.

I reached for the bag in the passenger seat. It had split open. I found one of the urns, held it against my chest with both arms.

The cold started at my fingers. It moved up my arms, into my chest, slow and patient.

I closed my eye. I thought about my grandfather, the way he used to let me help in his garden when I was small. I thought about my grandmother's lemon cake. I thought about the baby I'd lost, the one Cole had chosen not to save.

I didn't think about Cole at all.

The cold kept coming. I held the urn tighter.

Somewhere far away, I heard a voice.
