Chapter 5

I woke up warm.

That was the first thing I noticed. Warmth, and the smell of woodsmoke, and a ceiling made of rough pine beams instead of plaster. I tried to sit up. My body informed me, with considerable emphasis, that this was not currently an option.

"Easy." The voice came from somewhere to my left. Male, low, careful. "You've been out for about fourteen hours. Don't rush it."

I turned my head. The man sitting in the chair beside the bed was maybe forty, maybe older. Hard to tell. He had the kind of face that weather had gotten to before age could — lines around his eyes, a scar along his jaw, dark hair going gray at the temples. He was holding a mug of something that steamed.

"Where am I?"

"My cabin. About twelve miles outside of Whitehall, Montana. You went off the road in the storm last night. I heard the impact."

I tried to remember the crash. It came back in pieces. The spin. The cold. The urn pressed against my chest. "My bag—"

"On the table. I didn't go through it. Just dried it out."

I looked past him. The bag was there, intact. Relief hit me so hard I had to close my eye.

"You should drink something," he said. "Water's on the nightstand."

I reached for the glass. My hand shook. He didn't try to help. He just waited until I got it to my mouth and managed a few sips.

"Thank you," I said.

He nodded once. "You need a hospital. Your legs are already damaged — I could see that from the casts — and you've got hypothermia, possible concussion, lacerations that need proper cleaning. I stabilized what I could, but I'm not a doctor."

"No hospitals."

He studied me for a long moment. "Someone looking for you?"

"No. Not anymore."

He accepted that without pushing. "All right. But if you get worse, I'm taking you in whether you like it or not."

"Understood."

He stood, set the mug down. "I'm Dante. Dante Thompson."

"Eliza," I said. Then, because some part of me still believed in full disclosure: "Eliza Wheeler."

He went very still. Not frozen, exactly. Just absolutely motionless, the way a person stops moving when they've just heard something that reconfigures everything.

"Wheeler," he repeated.

"Yes."

He sat back down. Slowly. "Thomas Wheeler. Field medic. Did volunteer work overseas about ten years back."

My throat tightened. "My grandfather."

Dante exhaled, a long breath that sounded like it had been held for years. "He saved my life."

I stared at him. "What?"

"Delta Force. Humanitarian mission in a conflict zone that went bad. My unit took fire, pulled out fast. I was hit, couldn't move. They left me." He said it without bitterness, just fact. "Your grandfather found me three days later. Kept me in a shelter for three weeks. Cleaned the wounds, kept the fever down, talked me through the worst of it. Never asked for anything. Never even told me his full name. Just 'Tom.'"

I couldn't speak.

"When I got stateside, I tried to find him," Dante continued. "Wanted to thank him properly. But he'd moved on to another site, and the organization didn't keep great records. I've been carrying it around ever since. The debt."

I looked at him — this stranger who'd pulled me out of a wrecked car in a storm, who'd kept me alive through the night, who was sitting here now telling me he owed my grandfather everything.

"He never mentioned you," I said quietly. "He never mentioned any of it."

"That sounds like him."

Something in my chest cracked. Not broke. Cracked, like ice in spring, the first give before the thaw. I felt my face start to crumple, felt the tears come, and I couldn't stop them. I cried the way I hadn't cried since the hospital, since the baby, since the first lash. I cried until my ribs hurt and my throat was raw and the pillowcase was soaked.

Dante didn't move. He didn't try to touch me, didn't tell me it was okay, didn't do anything except sit there and let me fall apart without making it his.

When I finally stopped, he handed me a tissue from the box on the nightstand.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"Don't be."

I wiped my face. My eye — the one that still worked — was swollen and hot. "I don't know what I'm doing here."

"You're surviving," Dante said. "That's enough for now."

I looked at him. At this man who didn't know me, who didn't owe me anything, who was offering me something I hadn't had in so long I'd forgotten what it felt like.

Safety.

"Okay," I whispered.

He nodded. "Get some rest. We'll figure out the next part when you're stronger."

He stood, picked up the mug, and left the room. The door closed softly behind him.

I lay there in the warm bed, in the cabin that smelled like woodsmoke and safety, and for the first time in years, I let myself believe that maybe — maybe — I could survive this after all.
