When My Husband Left Me for the Woman I Mentored

8.5 / 10.0
A seven-year marriage built on unwavering trust is shattered in an instant. Returning early from a trip to Chicago to surprise her husband, Dillon, a devoted wife walks into their New York apartment carrying his favorite pastries. Instead of a loving welcome, she is met with the devastating sound of unfamiliar laughter echoing through their home. This modern romance novel uncovers a shocking betrayal, where years of dedication are rewarded with a heart-wrenching and permanent heartbreak.

When My Husband Left Me for the Woman I Mentored Chapter 1

The flight from Chicago landed two hours ahead of schedule. I took it as a small gift from the universe — a rare tailwind, a clean cab line at LaGuardia, a doorman who smiled and said, "Welcome home, Mrs. Andrews," as he held the door open for me.

I rode the elevator up to the fourteenth floor with my carry-on at my feet and a paper bag from the bakery on Lexington in my hand. Almond croissants. Dillon's favorite. I had stopped on the way without thinking about it, the way you stop for milk or stamps. Seven years of marriage builds those reflexes.

I slid my key into the lock and turned it.

The sound that reached me first was laughter. Hers, then his — low and easy, the laughter of people who have been alone in a room for a long time. I stepped into the foyer, and the apartment opened up the way it always did: the long hallway, the framed black-and-white photographs, the slant of late afternoon light pooling on the hardwood.

In the living room, Lola Ramos was stretched across our couch with her bare legs draped over my husband's lap. Her head was tipped back against the armrest. Her hair was loose. Dillon's hand was resting on her ankle — not gripping, not moving, just resting there with the casual ownership of a hand that had been there before.

The laughter died at exactly the same moment, the way two notes cut off when you lift your foot off the pedal.

I did not speak. I set the carry-on down beside the door. I set the bakery bag on the entry table. I let the silence do its work.

Lola moved first. She swung her legs off Dillon's lap, slowly, the way a person moves when they are deciding whether to perform an explanation. Her cheeks pinked. Her mouth opened, then closed.

Dillon stood up. He smoothed the front of his sweater. He said, "You're back early."

I looked at him. I did not blink.

"Wave," he said. He took a step toward me, palms turning up. "Come on. Don't — don't do this. You're reading into things."

"I haven't done anything yet," I said.

"She just stopped by to talk. She's been going through some stuff at work. You know how it gets."

I looked at Lola. She was sitting upright now, knees pressed together, hands folded in her lap like a girl at a job interview. Twenty-three years old. I had taken her to her first opera at fifteen. I had written her recommendation for her undergraduate transfer. I had paid for the laptop she was now, presumably, using to film her life in my apartment.

"Lola," I said. My voice was level. "I'd like you to leave."

She glanced at Dillon. That glance — quick, automatic, a daughter checking with the parent who outranks the other one — told me everything I had not yet been ready to know.

"Waverly," Dillon said. The warmth had drained out of his voice and something harder had taken its place. "That's unfair. She has no one else to talk to right now. You know what her situation is like. You of all people should — "

"I of all people," I repeated.

He heard it. I watched him hear it. And then I watched him decide to keep going anyway.

"This is what I'm talking about," he said. "This travel schedule of yours. You come home looking for things. You're hyper-vigilant about everything. It's exhausting, Wave."

The bakery bag was still in my peripheral vision. Almond croissants. The reflex of seven years.

Lola stood up. She walked past me without speaking, without looking at me, her bare feet making no sound on the floor she had walked across a hundred times as my guest. The door clicked shut behind her. She did not say goodbye.

The apartment was very quiet.

I walked past Dillon into the kitchen. I set my hands on the cold marble of the island and looked down at them. My wedding ring caught the light. My mother's gold watch ticked steadily on my wrist. Somewhere behind me, Dillon was saying my name in the tone people use when they are trying to coax a small animal out from under furniture.

I did not turn around.

I stood there for a long time. Long enough for the light in the kitchen to shift from gold to grey. Long enough for Dillon to stop speaking and disappear down the hall. Long enough for me to understand that the woman who had walked through that door an hour ago was not coming back.

When I finally moved, it was only to open the drawer beside the refrigerator and take out a fresh notebook. I sat down at the kitchen island. I uncapped a pen.

I began to write down everything I had just seen.

Friday evening, I called Scottie.

I did not cry. I listed facts: the couch, the ankle, the glance, the week that followed — the way Dillon answered Lola's calls in the middle of dinner, the way he ordered the restaurant she liked when we went out to celebrate my promotion, the three separate times in one evening he had said her name without noticing.

Scottie did not interrupt once.

When I finished, she said, "I'm coming over."

"You don't have to."

"I know," she said, and hung up.

Forty minutes later, she was at my door with a bottle of Sancerre in one hand and a paper bag of pad see ew in the other. She looked at my face. She did not say anything for a full ten seconds.

Then she walked past me into the kitchen, set the bag on the counter, and said, "Tell me everything."

And for the first time since the door had opened on Wednesday afternoon, I sat down.
