Chapter 2

The hotel suite smelled like nothing.

That was the first thing I noticed when I let myself in. No flowers. No candles. No three weeks of careful arranging. Just clean sheets and the faint chemical sweetness of housekeeping spray. I dropped my coat on a chair and stood in the middle of the room for a while, not sure what to do with my hands.

My phone buzzed once. A text.

*Landing in twenty.*

I sat down on the edge of the bed and waited.

---

Theo knocked twice. He always did. Two short raps, like he was apologizing for the noise before he made it.

I opened the door and he was standing there with a duffel bag in one hand and a leather folder in the other. No flowers. No card. No sad face. He looked at me the way he always had—steady, a little dry around the eyes, as if he'd already decided not to say anything stupid.

"You look terrible," he said.

"Thanks."

"I brought coffee. Real coffee. The stuff in the lobby tastes like a parking lot."

He walked past me into the suite like he'd been there a hundred times. He set the folder on the table. He unpacked a small bag of beans and a French press from the duffel, which was the most Theo thing I'd ever seen, and he started the kettle without asking.

I watched him from the doorway.

"Claire Nguyen," he said, nodding at the folder. "Name partner. She doesn't lose. I retained her this morning."

"You didn't ask me."

"I know." He poured water. "You can fire her tomorrow if you want."

I didn't say anything. He didn't either. He brought two mugs over and set one in front of me and sat down across the table. The skyline outside was that flat gray New York gives you in February when even the weather can't be bothered. I wrapped both hands around the cup and stared at the steam.

He didn't ask.

Minutes passed. Maybe an hour. The coffee went cold in my hands and he made another pot. He didn't check his phone. He didn't shift in his chair. He just sat there, the way you sit with someone whose breathing has gone shallow, waiting for it to come back.

The sky outside turned from gray to a darker gray.

"Theo."

"Yeah."

I opened my mouth. Closed it. Tried again. "I don't know where to start."

"You don't have to start." He took the cold mug out of my hands and replaced it with a warm one. "You can just sit."

So I sat.

---

The next morning, the car smelled like leather and rain.

Theo drove. He always preferred to drive himself when he could. I sat in the back because I wanted the distance from the windshield, from the city blurring past, from everything that required me to be a person who was looking forward.

My wallet was in my lap. I didn't remember taking it out.

I opened it slowly. My fingers knew the fold. Behind the credit cards, behind my license, behind a receipt from a bookstore I'd gone to with Mateo two summers ago and never thrown away—there it was. The little grainy printout. Twelve weeks. A curve. A small clenched fist of something that had been mine.

I'd looked at it every morning. Sometimes twice. I had memorized the shape of it the way other people memorize prayers.

I held it out between the front seats.

Theo glanced down. The car slowed almost imperceptibly. He took the photo from my fingers—gently, the way you take a moth off a window—and he looked at it for a long time. Long enough that the light changed twice and the car behind us honked once and he didn't move.

Then he handed it back. He didn't say anything. He reached over the console and took my hand and held it.

We didn't speak for the rest of the drive.

I tucked the photograph back into my wallet at the curb outside Claire Nguyen's office. I touched the leather once. I got out.

---

The weeks after, I worked.

That is the simplest way to say it. I moved into my parents' New York residence on Fifth Avenue—the apartment they kept and rarely used—and I turned the library into a war room. Whiteboards. Encrypted drives. A pinboard with photographs and timelines and red string that I would have laughed at six months ago.

Claire came every morning at nine. She was small and severe and drank her coffee black and never once told me she was sorry, which I appreciated more than I could explain. We catalogued the footage frame by frame. Every laugh. Every dial turn. Every glance Mateo threw at Conor like they were watching a sport.

I made myself watch it. All of it. Once a week. I would not let it become something I flinched from.

The financial work came next. The Owens real estate holdings were a slow-motion landslide held together by short-term loans and creative accounting. I documented every fault line. I learned the names of their lenders. I learned which board members hated each other.

And then, deep in the discovery files, in a column of phone metadata that had taken three subpoenas to pry loose, I found it.

Conor Stevens. Skyler Diaz. Forty-seven calls in two months. Most after midnight. Some lasting hours.

I sat back in my chair and looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I closed the file. I didn't tell Claire. I didn't tell Theo.

Not yet.

I poured myself a glass of water—still no alcohol; my mind had to stay clear—and I crossed the line off the whiteboard where I had written *find the leverage.*

I walked to the window. The city was lit up below me, all glass and money and people who had no idea what was coming.

I touched the outside of my wallet.

Then I went back to work.
