After surviving seven grueling years of deployment, a dedicated female soldier returns home on Christmas Eve to face a shattering betrayal. Armed with her original marriage certificate, she arrives at Fort Bragg only to discover that her husband, Captain Cox, has legally declared her dead. Now, another woman is living her life, hosting his holiday party, and the gate guards view her as a joke. But she refuses to be erased and is ready to confront the man who abandoned her.

My Husband Declared Me Dead and Married His Mistress Chapter 1

The guard at the Fort Bragg gate had a smirk that made my stomach tighten before he even spoke.

"You looking for Captain Cox?" He leaned out of the booth, breath fogging in the Christmas Eve cold. "His wife's inside. Throwing the holiday party like she does every year."

I stared at him. My transfer papers were folded in my coat pocket. My original marriage certificate—the one I'd carried in a waterproof sleeve for seven years, through blizzards and supply runs and nights so cold my breath froze on my pillow—was in my other hand.

"I'm his wife," I said.

The smirk widened. "Sure you are, lady."

He waved me through like it was a joke. Like I was the punchline.

I walked past the gate and into the officers' housing complex. The sidewalks were lined with lights. Wreaths on every door. I knew this neighborhood. I used to live here. Before Alaska. Before seven years of frostbite and isolation and hazard pay I sent home every month so Dawson could afford the life he wanted.

Our old apartment—his apartment now, I guess—was at the end of the block. The windows glowed warm. I could hear music and laughter spilling out into the street.

I stopped at the front door. Through the frosted glass I saw them.

Dawson stood beside the Christmas tree, laughing at something. A woman in a red dress—slim, elegant, blonde—had her hand on his arm. Between them, a little boy, maybe three years old, held an ornament shaped like a star.

The perfect family.

I raised my hand. Knocked.

The door opened. Dawson looked at me.

For half a second—just half—his face flickered. Recognition. Then it smoothed into something cold and confused.

"Can I help you?" he said.

Behind him, neighbors had gathered in the hallway. Holding drinks. Watching.

"Dawson," I said. My voice sounded strange. Too quiet. "It's me. I got my transfer papers. I came home."

He tilted his head. "I'm sorry, do I know you?"

The blonde woman stepped forward. Up close, she was beautiful in a way that felt deliberate. Makeup perfect. Hair styled. She looked me over—my old parka, my boots still caked with Alaskan mud, my chapped hands—and smiled.

"Dawson," she said softly. "Is this the woman you told me about? The one who's been calling?"

I pulled out the marriage certificate. Held it up. My hands were shaking. "We're married. Seven years. I have proof."

Dawson glanced at the paper. Then he looked at the neighbors. When he spoke, his voice was calm. Reasonable. "This is a distant relative. She's been having some issues. Mental health stuff. I've tried to help, but—"

"I'm your wife," I said.

The blonde woman's smile sharpened. She took the certificate from my hand—just plucked it away like it was trash—and studied it.

"Oh, sweetie," she said. Her voice dripped sympathy. "This is so sad. Dawson, should we call someone?"

"What are you talking about?" I reached for the paper. She held it out of reach.

"Rosie Wallace," she read aloud. "That's the name on here, right?" She looked at me. "Honey, Rosie Wallace has been dead for two years. Dawson had her declared KIA after she stopped responding to messages from her posting in Alaska. There was a whole investigation."

The floor tilted.

"That's not true," I said. "I'm right here. I've been writing. Sending money. I—"

"Your Social Security number was deactivated," the woman continued. Her tone was patient. Kind. Vicious. "Your military records were flagged. Legally, you don't exist. So whatever this paper is, it doesn't mean anything."

She handed the certificate back to me. I took it. My fingers were numb.

Dawson stepped forward. "I'm sorry you're confused," he said. "But you need to leave now."

"Dawson—"

He gestured to someone behind me. Two security guards stepped into the doorway. One of them was older, broad-shouldered, with sergeant stripes. His name tag read WEBB.

"Escort her off base," Dawson said.

Webb's hand closed around my arm. I jerked back.

"Don't touch me—"

The second guard grabbed my other arm. I fought. Tried to pull free. But they were trained and I was one woman who'd spent seven years in the cold and I was already shaking and no one in that hallway moved to help me.

They dragged me away from the door. Past the neighbors. Down the block. Around the corner behind the mess hall where the dumpsters sat in a row and the lights didn't reach.

Webb shoved me against the wall. I tried to speak. His fist hit my ribs. The air went out of me. The second guard punched my stomach. I doubled over. Webb grabbed my hair and slammed my head into the brick.

The world went white.

When I could see again, I was on the ground. Blood in my mouth. Something broken inside my chest.

Webb wiped his hands on his pants. "Crazy bitch," he muttered.

They picked me up—one under each arm—and threw me into the dumpster.

I landed on something wet and soft. Rotting food. Christmas garbage. The smell choked me.

Above me, the stars were very bright. Very far away.

I heard footsteps walking away. A radio crackling. "Disturbance handled."

Then nothing.

I closed my eyes. The cold pressed in. My ribs screamed with every breath.

I thought about the blizzard. The convoy I'd saved three years ago. The after-action report I'd written and sent to Dawson because he said it would help his career.

I thought about the money. Every paycheck. Seven years.

I thought about the woman in the red dress. The little boy. The Christmas tree.

I thought: I don't exist.

Somewhere far away, I heard an engine. Voices. But they were fading.

I was so cold.

I thought: This is how it ends.

And the stars kept watching.
