Chapter 3

The envelope arrived on a Tuesday.

No return address. Cream paper, heavy stock, the kind Mateo ordered in bulk because he liked the weight of it in other people's hands. My name was written across the front in his handwriting—that particular slant I had spent six years learning to read like weather.

I opened it at the kitchen table with my coffee going cold beside me.

An invitation. Gold ink. *Celebrating Skyler Diaz—Academic Excellence and New Beginnings.* The penthouse. Saturday. Eight o'clock.

The handwritten note was tucked behind it on a smaller card.

*You should see what you're missing.*

I read it twice. Set it down. Picked up my coffee.

The city outside was doing what it always does in March—gray and indifferent, pigeons on the ledge, a cab horn somewhere below. I sat with the note for a long moment. Not because it hurt. Because I was deciding something.

I pulled out my phone and typed three words into the RSVP email.

*Harlee Carpenter. Yes.*

Then I went back to work.

---

Friday night, Theo came over at ten.

I had the penthouse layout spread across the library table—a floor plan I'd pulled from the original architect's filing, annotated in pencil. Exit points circled. The bar marked with a small *x*. The living room sectioned into zones based on sightlines and acoustics.

Theo stood in the doorway for a moment, looking at the table. Then he came in and sat down across from me without a word.

"Conor drinks Scotch," I said. "Single malt, always. He switches to bourbon when he's performing. When he's on his third bourbon, he'll take any bet that makes him look good in front of the room."

Theo picked up one of the annotated pages. Turned it once. Set it back.

"Marcus Hale is the same," I continued. "He's louder about it. He needs an audience more than Conor does. If Conor takes the bet, Marcus follows. That's how Mateo's circle works—someone has to go first, and then everyone else falls in line because no one wants to be the one who didn't."

"And Mateo?"

"Mateo goes last." I turned the floor plan around so Theo could see the living room section. "He always lets other people establish the stakes. Then he steps in and raises them. It's how he controls a room. He thinks it makes him look powerful." I paused. "It used to."

Theo was quiet for a moment. Outside, the wind picked up and the windows flexed almost imperceptibly.

"The device," he said.

"I still have it." I kept my voice even. "Skyler left it. I don't think she thought I'd still be in the penthouse long enough for it to matter."

"And the voltage."

"Maximum setting is here." I tapped the annotated diagram where I'd sketched the device's control panel from memory. "The probability mechanics of the bet are built around a loaded variable that looks random. I've run it forty times. The outcome is fixed. They won't know that."

Theo looked at the diagram. Then at me.

"They'll think they're watching a game," I said. "They won't realize they're watching a sentencing."

He leaned back in his chair. The lamplight caught the angle of his jaw, the particular stillness he had when he was thinking hard about something he wasn't going to say.

"They'll call it a stunt," he said finally. "After. When it's over. They'll try to reframe it."

"Let them." I capped my pen. "The footage from the penthouse that night already exists. My attorney already has it. What happens Saturday becomes the second document in a file that ends his life as he knows it." I looked at him. "I'm not doing this for the room. I'm doing it for the record."

Theo was quiet for a long time.

The clock on the shelf ticked. Somewhere in the building a door closed.

"You've already won," he said. "The party is just the paperwork."

I almost smiled. It surprised me—the almost of it. The fact that something in my face still remembered how.

I looked back down at the floor plan. The little circled exits. The carefully mapped zones of a room I had once filled with white peonies and candlelight and the particular foolishness of believing I was loved.

I touched the edge of the paper.

"Get some sleep," Theo said. He stood, gathered his jacket from the back of the chair. At the door he paused. "I'll be there Saturday. You won't see me. But I'll be there."

"I know," I said.

He left. I listened to his footsteps down the hall, the quiet close of the front door.

I sat alone with the floor plan and the lamplight and the city spread out below me like something I was about to inherit.

In my wallet, folded small, the photograph waited.

I didn't take it out tonight. I didn't need to.

I already knew exactly what I was fighting for.
