Chapter 2

The restaurant Margot chose was the kind of place where the lighting made everyone look like they were in a dream. Soft gold. Candles in little glass bowls. I sat across from her and watched her glow.

She'd been talking for ten minutes straight. About the venue—some estate in the Hamptons with a view of the water. About the dress fittings. About how Christian surprised her last week with a weekend trip to the Berkshires just because she mentioned wanting to see the leaves change.

"He's so thoughtful," she said, leaning forward. "Like, he remembers everything I say. Even the small stuff."

I lifted my wine glass. Took a sip. It tasted like nothing.

"That's wonderful," I said.

She reached across the table and squeezed my hand. "I'm so glad you're here, Leila. I know things have been weird between us lately. I feel like I haven't seen you in forever."

"I've been busy," I said.

"I know. But tonight—" She smiled. "Tonight is just us. Like old times."

I smiled back. My face knew how to do it without me.

She kept talking. About the honeymoon—two weeks in Italy. About the cake tasting they did last Thursday. About how Christian's mother was difficult but Margot was determined to win her over.

I nodded. I made the right sounds. I asked the right questions.

My thumbnail pressed into my palm under the table. The cut from yesterday had scabbed over. I pressed until I felt it split open again.

The pain was clean. It helped.

Then the door opened.

I saw him before Margot did. Christian walked in with three men in suits. They were laughing about something. He was in the middle, hands in his pockets, that easy confidence he wore like a second skin.

Margot turned. Her whole face lit up. "Oh my god—Christian!"

She waved.

He saw her. Smiled. Started walking over.

Then his eyes found me.

For half a second, something flickered across his face. Not guilt. Not surprise. Just a quick calculation. Then it was gone.

He reached the table. Leaned down and kissed Margot's cheek. "Hey, sweetheart. I didn't know you'd be here."

"Last-minute thing," Margot said, beaming. She gestured at me. "You remember I told you about my best friend Leila, right?"

Christian straightened. Looked at me. Extended his hand.

"Nice to meet you," he said.

His voice was warm. Polite. Exactly the tone you'd use with a stranger.

I stared at his hand. The same hand that signed the divorce papers last night. The same hand that used to trace circles on my back when I couldn't sleep.

There was a callus on his palm. From the way he gripped his pen during long meetings. I used to tease him about it.

I reached out. Took his hand.

"Likewise," I said.

His grip was firm. Professional. He held it for exactly two seconds, then let go.

Margot was glowing. "Leila's going to be my maid of honor. Can you believe it? My two favorite people finally meeting."

Christian smiled at her. Then at me. "That's great. Margot's told me a lot about you."

"She's told me a lot about you too," I said.

Something tightened around his eyes. Just for a moment.

One of the men with him cleared his throat. "Christian, our table's ready."

"Right." He squeezed Margot's shoulder. "I'll let you two get back to your dinner. It was nice meeting you, Leila."

"You too," I said.

He walked away. I watched him go. Watched him sit down at a table by the window. Watched him pick up a menu like nothing had happened.

Margot sighed. "Isn't he perfect?"

I picked up my wine glass. Drained it.

"Perfect," I said.

---

Ten minutes later, I excused myself. Told Margot I needed the restroom.

I walked past the bar, past the hostess stand, down a narrow hallway with exposed brick. The restroom was small. Two stalls. A mirror above a white ceramic sink.

I locked myself in the far stall. Pressed both palms flat against the tile wall.

My hands were shaking.

I closed my eyes. Breathed in through my nose. Out through my mouth. Counted to ten.

The shaking didn't stop.

I opened my eyes. Looked down at my palms. The left one had a thin line of blood where my thumbnail had been digging in.

I ran cold water over it. Watched the blood swirl down the drain.

Then I looked up at the mirror.

The woman looking back at me was composed. Hair neat. Lipstick still in place. Expression calm.

Seven years, I thought. Seven years of practicing this face.

I dried my hands. Reapplied my lipstick. Checked my teeth.

Perfect.

I walked back to the table.

Margot was scrolling through photos on her phone. "Look—these are the centerpiece options. I'm leaning toward the peonies but Christian thinks roses are more classic. What do you think?"

I sat down. Looked at the screen.

"Peonies," I said.

"Right?" She grinned. "That's what I said."

The waiter came by. Asked if we wanted dessert.

Margot looked at me. "Should we?"

I smiled. "Absolutely."

We ordered the chocolate soufflé. It came in a small white ramekin with powdered sugar on top. Margot took the first bite and closed her eyes.

"Oh my god. This is amazing."

I picked up my spoon.

Across the room, Christian laughed at something one of his colleagues said. The sound carried.

Margot didn't notice. She was too busy talking about the honeymoon. About Venice and the gondola ride Christian promised her. About how she'd never been to Europe and couldn't believe this was her life now.

I ate the soufflé.

It tasted like nothing.
