While folding Zachary's laundry, Leila answers three bright raps at the door to find Margot—radiant, breathless, clutching a cream envelope like glass. Before Leila can speak, Margot embraces her, confessing she had to deliver the news in person. That cheerful visit masks the ultimate betrayal: Zachary, Leila's husband, will leave her bleeding to protect his bride. As Margot's luminous secret unravels, an ordinary afternoon collapses into forbidden desire, obsession, and a marriage shattered beyond repair.

My Husband Left Me Bleeding to Protect His Bride Chapter 1

The knock came at three in the afternoon. I was folding Zachary's laundry on the couch when I heard it—three quick raps, bright and cheerful. I knew it was Margot before I opened the door. She had that kind of knock.

She stood in the hallway glowing. That's the only word for it. Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes wide, and she was holding a cream-colored envelope like it was made of glass.

"Leila!" She threw her arms around me before I could say hello. "I'm sorry I didn't call first. I just—I had to show you in person."

I stepped back and let her in. She swept past me into the living room, spinning once in the middle of the floor. She was wearing a pale blue dress I'd helped her pick out last spring. It looked better on her than it had in the store.

"Show me what?" I asked.

She pressed the envelope into my hands. It was heavy. Expensive paper. The kind that costs more than most people's weekly groceries.

"Open it," she said.

I slid my thumb under the seal. Inside was a wedding invitation. Embossed gold lettering. Margot's name at the top. And below it—

Christian Wells.

The world went silent.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm. Hard. The pain was sharp and clean and real. It kept me standing.

"Leila?" Margot's voice sounded far away. "Are you okay?"

I looked up. Smiled. "Of course. Congratulations."

She squealed and grabbed my hands. "I know! I can't believe it either. I've been dying to tell you but Christian wanted to wait until the invitations were printed. He's very traditional about some things."

Traditional.

I kept smiling. My face felt like wax.

"Tell me everything," I said.

She pulled me down onto the couch. She talked for twenty minutes. About how they met at a charity gala two years ago. About how he was different from anyone she'd ever dated—serious, focused, but tender when they were alone. About the proposal on the rooftop of his hotel with string lights and a violinist. About the centerpieces she was choosing between—white roses or peonies.

I nodded. I made the right sounds. I asked questions.

She didn't notice my thumbnail digging deeper into my palm. She didn't notice the blood.

"You'll be my maid of honor, right?" She looked at me with those bright, trusting eyes. "I can't do this without you."

"Of course," I said.

She hugged me again. Tight. "I'm so lucky to have you."

When she finally left, I closed the door and stood in the entryway. The invitation was still in my hand. I looked down at it. Christian's name in gold.

I walked to the kitchen. Slid down the wall. Sat on the floor.

On the refrigerator, Zachary's drawings were held up with magnets. A stick-figure family. A house. A father who was always away.

I stared at them until the light outside changed.

---

Christian came home at eight. I heard his shoes on the marble floor of the entryway. Heard him set his briefcase down. Heard him walk into the kitchen.

I was standing at the island. Waiting.

He didn't look surprised to see me. He pulled two documents from his briefcase and set them on the counter between us. One was thick. One was thin.

"The trust is for Zachary," he said. "Offshore. Managed by a third party. He'll have access when he turns twenty-five."

I looked down at the papers. Didn't touch them.

"The divorce petition is standard," he continued. "No fault. Clean split. You'll have the townhouse for another sixty days to make arrangements."

He said it all in the same tone he used for conference calls.

"Did the last seven years mean anything to you?" I asked quietly.

He exhaled. Not angry. Just tired. "Don't be emotional, Leila. Be practical."

"I am being practical," I said. "I'm asking a practical question."

He looked at me then. Really looked. For the first time in months.

"I think," he said slowly, "that we both did the best we could with a difficult situation."

A difficult situation.

I picked up the pen he'd left on the counter. My hands were shaking. I signed the first page. Then the second. Then all the others.

He watched me. Said nothing.

When I finished, I set the pen down. "Is that all?"

"That's all."

He picked up the documents, put them back in his briefcase, and left.

I stood at the island for a long time after he was gone. My heart didn't break. It had already broken this morning when I read Margot's invitation. What I felt now was something colder. Emptier.

Death, I thought, must feel like this.

---

I put Zachary to bed at nine. He asked where his father was.

"Working," I said.

"Is he coming home soon?"

"I don't know, sweetheart."

He nodded. He'd stopped asking follow-up questions a long time ago.

After he fell asleep, I went back to the kitchen. Opened the divorce papers again. Stared at my own signature.

I needed a pen earlier. I remembered seeing one in the nightstand. I walked to the bedroom and opened the drawer.

There, folded in the back, was the first note Christian ever left me. Three words on a torn receipt.

*I'll come back.*

I stared at it. My hands didn't shake this time.

I folded it exactly as it was. Put it back in the drawer. Closed it.

I didn't throw it away.

I didn't know why.

---

The next morning, I told Zachary we were going on an adventure. A long trip. Just the two of us.

His face lit up. "Where?"

"Somewhere new," I said. "We'll figure it out together."

I started packing his room. Clothes. Books. His favorite stuffed dinosaur.

He watched me with serious eyes. Then he walked to his desk, picked up his notebook, and brought it to the kitchen counter.

"Can you give this to Dad?" he asked. "For when he comes back from being busy."

I looked down at the notebook. "What is it?"

"Things I want to show him," Zachary said.

I knelt down. Pulled him close. "I promise."

That night, after he was asleep, I opened the notebook.

Page after page of careful drawings. A dinosaur skeleton. A bicycle trick. The view from his window.

The last page was a family. Three stick figures in front of a house. Every window was lit.

I closed the notebook.

This—this was what broke me.

Not the divorce papers. Not Christian's cold efficiency. Not even Margot's glowing face.

This.
