Chapter 3

The text came two days after the restaurant. A single line.

*Can we talk? Outside Zachary's school. 3 PM.*

I stared at it. Christian had never been to Zachary's school. Not once in seven years. Not for the fall festival. Not for parent-teacher conferences. Not even when Zachary won the second-grade science fair with a model volcano he'd built himself.

I texted back. *Okay.*

---

I arrived early. Stood across the street under a maple tree losing its leaves. The school was small. Red brick. A playground with swings and a slide. Zachary loved the slide.

Christian pulled up at three exactly. Black car. Tinted windows. He got out wearing a charcoal suit and sunglasses even though the sky was gray.

He crossed the street. Stopped a few feet away. Hands in his pockets.

"Thanks for meeting me," he said.

I didn't say anything.

He took off the sunglasses. Looked at the school building. "This is where he goes?"

"Every day."

He nodded slowly. Like he was filing the information away. "It looks nice."

"It is."

A long pause. A car drove past. Somewhere a dog barked.

"I need you to take Zachary to Europe," Christian said. "Before the wedding."

I blinked. "What?"

"A trip. Extended. Six weeks, maybe two months. I'll cover everything. First-class tickets. Hotels. Whatever you need."

My chest tightened. "Why?"

"Because it's better for everyone." He said it like he was explaining a business decision. Reasonable. Logical. "Margot doesn't know about you. About him. And I'd like to keep it that way until after the wedding."

"Until after," I repeated.

"Yes."

"And then what?"

He shifted his weight. "Then we'll figure it out. But right now, I need things to be simple."

Simple.

I looked at the school. At the swings moving slightly in the wind. At the window of Zachary's classroom on the second floor.

"He has school," I said quietly. "Friends. A routine."

"He's seven. He'll adjust."

"He's your son."

Christian's jaw tightened. "I know that."

"Do you?"

His eyes went cold. "Don't do this, Leila."

"Do what? Ask you to care?"

"I do care." His voice was clipped now. Sharp. "That's why I'm asking you to do this. For his sake. So he doesn't get caught in the middle of something complicated."

"He's already in the middle," I said. "He's been in the middle his whole life."

Christian looked away. A muscle in his jaw worked.

"Why does it have to be before the wedding?" I asked.

He didn't answer right away. When he did, his voice was quieter. Flatter.

"Because I can't lose her."

The words hung in the cold air between us.

"I made mistakes with you," he continued. "I know that. And I feel—" He stopped. Exhaled. "I feel some regret. But Margot is different. She's the future I should have chosen from the beginning. And I can't let anything jeopardize that."

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm. The cut from the restaurant opened again.

"So that's what we are," I said. "A mistake. A complication."

"That's not what I meant."

"Yes it is."

He put the sunglasses back on. "Will you do it? Take him to Europe?"

I looked at him. At the man I'd spent seven years loving. At the stranger standing in front of me.

"I'll leave by the end of the month," I said.

"Thank you."

He turned and walked back to his car. Got in. Drove away.

I stood under the maple tree until the bell rang. Watched the kids pour out of the building. Zachary came running toward me with his backpack bouncing.

"Mom! Guess what? We learned about planets today and I got to be Saturn!"

I knelt down. Hugged him tight.

"That's wonderful, sweetheart."

He pulled back. Looked at my face. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I said. "Let's go home."

---

The next morning I found the key in my coat pocket. The one to the Wells Capital building. Christian had given it to me years ago when he still pretended I might visit him at work someday.

I took the subway downtown. The building was glass and steel. Fifty stories. His name in chrome letters above the entrance.

I walked into the lobby. Marble floors. A fountain in the center. Security desk to the right.

I approached the receptionist. Young woman. Sleek ponytail. Professional smile.

"Can I help you?"

I set the key on the desk. "I'm returning this."

She picked it up. Looked at it. "May I have your name?"

"Leila Nguyen."

She typed something into her computer. Frowned. Typed again.

"I'm sorry," she said. "You're not on the authorized visitor log."

I stared at her. "What?"

"The system shows you were removed from building access three days ago." She looked up. Still smiling. "Is there someone specific you're trying to reach? I can call up for you."

Three days ago.

The same day I signed the divorce papers.

"No," I said. "That's fine."

I left the key on the desk. Turned. Walked back through the lobby.

Outside, the wind cut through my coat. I stood on the sidewalk and looked up at the building. At the windows reflecting the gray sky.

Somewhere up there, Christian was in a meeting. Making decisions. Building his future.

I had been erased.

Not just from his life. From the records. From the logs. From the list of people who were allowed to exist in his world.

I pulled my coat tighter and walked toward the subway.

My phone buzzed. A text from Margot.

*Dress fitting tomorrow at 2! Can't wait for you to see it!*

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I typed back.

*I'll be there.*

I pressed send.

And kept walking.
