Chapter 1

The ring light glowed in the corner of our dining room. Across from me, Collin’s chair sat empty.

I smoothed the skirt of my dress. It was a pale slip dress, cut on the bias, made from silk I bought months ago. I had designed and sewn it myself. It was the first thing I had sketched in over a year, and wearing it felt like breathing after being underwater.

On the phone screen mounted to my tripod, the viewer count ticked past one hundred thousand.

The comments scrolled by in a blur.

*Happy fifth anniversary, Paige!*

*Where is Collin?*

*You look so stunning in that dress!*

I forced a smile and leaned toward the lens. “Thank you, guys. Collin had a late client at the firm, but he just texted. He’s parking now.”

Five years. I had spent half a decade being the understanding wife to Collin Bryant, rising Manhattan defense attorney. I had dimmed my own work, kept the apartment immaculate, and smiled on cue.

The front door clicked open.

Relief hit me so hard my shoulders dropped. Collin stepped into the foyer, tossing his keys into the ceramic dish. He was tall, sharp in his charcoal suit, with dark hair swept neatly back.

“You’re just in time,” I said softly, glancing at the camera. “Everyone’s saying happy anniversary.”

Collin loosened his tie. He gave the phone a tight, practiced smile. “Evening, everyone.”

He pulled out his chair and sat down. For two whole minutes, it felt like we were real. I reached across the white linen tablecloth to pour his Cabernet.

Then his phone vibrated against the wood.

The screen lit up with a single name: *Anastasia.*

Collin looked down. His jaw locked.

I held the bottle in mid-air. “Collin, please. Not tonight. Just one night.”

He answered anyway. He put it to his ear without looking at me.

Through the small speaker, Anastasia’s voice came through thin and ragged. *“Collin… I can’t breathe. My chest hurts. The lights went out and I… please, Collin.”*

It was the fifty-fifth time. I had kept count in my head, a quiet tally of every dinner, movie, and holiday she had ruined.

Collin stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor.

“I’ll be right there, Stas,” he said. His voice was full of terror and sudden energy. “Breathe for me. I’m coming.”

“Collin, look at me,” I said. My voice was very quiet. “Look at what you’re doing.”

He didn’t look. He grabbed his wool coat from the back of the chair and whipped it around his shoulders. The heavy hem caught the stem of my crystal wine glass.

The glass tipped, hit the edge of the mahogany table, and shattered.

I flinched and reached out on instinct. A sharp edge sliced deep across my palm.

Pain flared, hot and sudden. Dark red blood welled up, spilling over my fingers and dripping onto the white tablecloth.

“Collin,” I whispered.

He didn’t turn his head. He had his keys back in his hand.

“She’s having an attack, Paige,” he snapped as he reached the foyer. “Stop being selfish.”

The heavy oak door slammed shut. The latch clicked into place.

The apartment went completely still.

On the table, my blood pooled on the white linen, bright and vivid under the ring light.

I sat frozen in my handmade dress.

On the phone screen, the comment section went wild. The text moved too fast to read.

*DID HE JUST LEAVE HER?*

*OMG HER HAND!*

*HE DID NOT JUST DO THAT ON LIVE.*

*Paige, are you okay?!*

One hundred thousand people had just watched my husband run out to save another woman while I bled out on our anniversary dinner.

I looked at the closed front door. My heart felt cold. It didn’t race. It didn’t ache. The last little spark of warmth in my chest simply turned to ash.

I didn’t cry.

I reached out with my uninjured hand. My fingers didn’t shake. I tapped the red button on the screen and ended the stream.

Darkness settled in the room, broken only by the candles flickering over the cold steaks.

I stood up and walked to the kitchen.

I turned the tap on. Ice-cold water ran over my cut palm. The water washed the red down the stainless-steel drain. I found the first-aid kit under the sink, pressed a thick gauze pad against the cut, and wrapped it in white medical tape. I pulled it tight. The throbbing grew dull.

I looked down at my left hand.

The platinum band sat on my ring finger. For five years, I had twisted that ring whenever I felt small. I had twisted it when he canceled our trips. I had twisted it when Anastasia called in the middle of the night.

I slid it off.

It came off easily.

I walked over to the kitchen counter and pulled open the junk drawer. Inside were old takeout menus, rubber bands, expired coupons, and dead AA batteries.

I dropped the ring inside. It clinked against a pair of rusted scissors.

Then I closed the drawer.

I picked up my phone from the counter. My thumb was steady as I tapped Collin’s name.

I typed four words:

*I want a divorce.*

I hit send.

Then I walked back to the dining table. I blew out the candles, one by one.

I sat down in the dark with the cold food and the broken glass.

For the first time in five years, the silence belonged only to me.
