Chapter 2

The key turned in the lock at six in the morning.

I was in the bedroom. My small carry-on suitcase lay open on the mattress. I folded a beige cashmere sweater and laid it inside.

Footsteps echoed down the hall. They slowed near the dining room. I knew what Collin was seeing: the candles burned down to wax stubs, the two cold steaks, and the dark patch of dried blood stiff on the white linen.

A moment later, his shadow fell across the bedroom door.

Collin leaned against the doorframe. His tie was shoved in his pocket. His dress shirt was creased, and dark purple circles bruised the skin under his eyes. He smelled like sour hospital coffee and Anastasia’s sweet vanilla perfume.

He crossed his arms. He gave me a tired, patient look. It was the look he gave stubborn clients in court.

"Paige," he said softly. "Let’s be reasonable. You’re overreacting."

I didn’t answer. I smoothed down a silk blouse and folded it.

"Anastasia had a serious attack," he went on, his voice smooth and persuasive. "Her heart rate spiked over one-sixty. The paramedics almost took her in. I had to stay until she stabilized. You know how fragile she is."

I placed the blouse inside the bag and zipped the inner compartment.

"I know you're upset," he said. He took a step into the room and reached for my shoulder. "The timing was terrible. I knocked over the glass by accident. But this? Packing a bag at dawn? It's childish, Paige."

I pulled the zipper across the heavy teeth of the suitcase. The sound was loud in the quiet room.

I looked up. My bandaged hand rested on the metal handle.

"I've retained a divorce attorney," I said. My voice came out steady and cold. "You'll hear from them this week."

His litigator mask slipped. His eyes narrowed. A dark flush of red crept up his neck.

"Are you serious?" he snapped. The calm was gone, replaced by pure irritation. "Over a missed dinner? After five years, you throw a tantrum and run to a lawyer? God, you are so selfish."

I didn’t yell. I didn’t cry.

I pulled up the handle of my suitcase, rolled it past him, and walked out the front door.

I checked into a quiet boutique hotel near Washington Square Park.

Collin called twelve times before noon. He sent twenty text messages.

*Don't do this.*

*We need to talk.*

*Let me fix it.*

By Tuesday, his panic shifted into damage control. Collin cared about appearances more than anything, and the anniversary livestream had gone viral. Thousands of comments were calling him a monster.

On Wednesday, he sent an email with an invoice attached.

He had booked an entire afternoon at a luxury photography studio in Soho. Full lighting, top photographer, private suite.

*A belated anniversary shoot,* he wrote. *A real celebration. For you, and for your followers. Let me make this right.*

I stared at the screen.

I didn't care about his apology. I didn't care about saving our public image.

But in the hotel closet hung a garment bag. Inside was the bridal gown I had spent seven months designing and hand-sewing. Every stitch, every pearl, every yard of silk organza had come from my own hands. I had poured my soul into it back when I still believed in us.

It was my best work. I wasn't going to let it rot in the dark just because my marriage was dead.

I replied with one word: *Okay.*

***

On Thursday morning, gray rain washed over the tall studio windows in Soho.

I arrived holding my garment bag. Collin was standing by the equipment cases, wearing a sharp black tuxedo. When he saw me, a relieved smile touched his mouth.

"You came," he said, stepping forward to kiss my cheek.

I took a step back, keeping my distance. "Where is the dressing room?"

"Room two," he said, clearing his throat. His smile faltered. "Paige, thank you. You won't regret this."

I ignored him and carried my bag toward the dressing rooms.

The studio stage was flooded with bright white light.

Then I stopped dead in the hallway.

A woman stood in the center of the backdrop, laughing with the photographer.

It was Anastasia.

And she was wearing a bridal gown.

My chest tightened.

The dress she had on was nearly identical to mine. It had the same sweetheart neckline, the same dropped waist, and the exact same sheer silk overlay drifting over the skirt. She had only made one change: off-the-shoulder straps, showing off the faint, tiny scar on her upper arm.

Months ago, she had stayed at our apartment and borrowed my iPad. She had scrolled through my private sketch folders.

Anastasia turned. She caught my eye.

Her mouth formed an innocent little 'O.' She clasped her hands over her chest, her eyes wide and sparkling.

"Oh my God," she cried out softly. "Paige! Look at us! We match! That's so funny."

Behind me, Collin walked up. He didn't look angry. He looked slightly uneasy, but his tone was instantly defensive.

"She needed headshots for her portfolio, Paige," he muttered. "The studio had extra time. It only made sense to share."

My hand gripped the handle of my bag so hard my cut throbbed under the bandage.

I went completely still.

"Alright, folks!" the photographer called out, adjusting a giant softbox. "Let's get started!"
