Chapter 2

The phone rang at two in the afternoon.

I was sitting in the hotel room with a legal pad in my lap. Notes for the Bar Exam. Constitutional law. I'd been staring at the same page for twenty minutes.

Joelle's name lit up the screen.

I almost didn't answer. But something in my chest tightened. Aidan.

I picked up.

"Robin." Her voice was shaking. High and thin. "You need to come. Right now."

"What happened?"

"It's Aidan. He's—he's coughing up blood. I don't know what to do. He's asking for you. Please. Please come."

The legal pad hit the floor. I grabbed my coat. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely zip it. I didn't think. Didn't question. I just moved.

I ran to the elevator. Jabbed the button six times. The ride down felt like drowning. I couldn't breathe right. My knee throbbed as I sprinted across the lobby. The doorman called after me but I didn't stop.

I flagged a cab. Gave the driver the brownstone address. Told him to hurry. He looked at me in the rearview mirror and stepped on the gas.

Traffic was thick. I sat forward in the seat. My pulse was hammering in my ears. Blood. Aidan was coughing up blood. His medication—had I left instructions? Had Ezekiel been checking? What if it was internal? What if I'd missed something?

The cab pulled up. I shoved bills at the driver and ran.

I burst through the front door without knocking. My breath was ragged. My vision was tunneling.

"Aidan!" I shouted.

Silence.

Then laughter.

I stopped.

Aidan was sitting on the living room couch. Legs crossed. Completely fine. His mouth was smeared with something red. Ketchup. It was ketchup.

He looked at me and laughed harder. The sound was high and cruel. Like he'd been holding it in and couldn't anymore.

Joelle stood behind the couch. Arms folded. She wasn't panicking now. She was smiling. Quiet. Satisfied.

"Surprise," Aidan said between giggles. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. The ketchup smeared across his cheek. "You should've seen your face."

I couldn't move. Couldn't speak. My heart was still racing. My hands were still shaking.

Joelle tilted her head. "We just wanted to see if you'd come," she said softly. "You know. Since you left."

Aidan nodded. "Yeah. You left. So we didn't know if you still cared."

The room was spinning. I looked at my son. At the ketchup on his face. At the laughter in his eyes.

"You—" My voice cracked. "You made me think you were dying."

"It was just a joke, Mom." He said the word like it tasted bad. "Relax."

Joelle's smile widened just a fraction. "He's fine. See? Totally fine. You can go back to your hotel now."

Something inside me snapped.

Nine years. Nine years of swallowing every word. Every insult. Every silent dismissal. Nine years of watching this woman dismantle my family piece by piece while I smiled and set the table and asked if anyone wanted more water.

I crossed the room.

Joelle's smile faltered. Just for a second.

I slapped her.

Hard. Open-palmed. The sound cracked through the air like a gunshot.

Her head snapped to the side. She staggered back a step. Her hand flew to her cheek.

For one perfect, crystalline second, there was silence.

Then Joelle started to wail.

Loud. Theatrical. Her whole body shook. She clutched her face like I'd broken something. "She attacked me!" she screamed. "Oh my God, she attacked me! Aidan, did you see that? She just—she just hit me for no reason!"

Aidan was off the couch. Staring. The laughter was gone.

"You're crazy," he whispered. "You're actually crazy."

Joelle sank to the floor. Still wailing. Still holding her face. "I can't believe this. I can't—Ezekiel needs to know. He needs to know what she did."

I stood there. My palm was stinging. My chest was heaving.

I looked at Joelle. At her performance. At the way she was crying without tears.

I looked at Aidan. At the ketchup still smeared on his mouth. At the way he was looking at me like I was the monster.

And I felt nothing.

No regret. No shame. Just a cold, clear certainty.

I turned and walked toward the door.

"That's right, run!" Joelle shrieked behind me. "Run away like you always do! Ezekiel's going to hear about this! You're going to pay for this!"

I didn't answer.

I walked out. Pulled the door shut behind me. The sound echoed.

I stood on the front steps. The air was cold. My hand was still tingling.

I took a breath. Then another.

And I started walking.
